Spotlight On... ISD 622 Pathways
So what are Pathways anyway and how can they benefit me?
Pathways can help you:
- Select high school classes that align with your career skills, interests and talents
- Understand how the classes you are taking now can lead to creating a solid post-high school plan, including choosing a college major
- Identify extra-curricular activities and groups that relate to your career interests
- Get connected to classes in high school that offer early college credit, saving you time and money
- Shift from just "planning to graduate" to "graduating with a plan."

NURSING ASSISTANT-REGISTERED pilot program - Spring 2021
Our 622 Career Pathways and Planning program collaborated with NE Metro 916 Career & Tech and developed a pilot program and sent 10 North and Tartan High School students through the Nursing Assistant-Registered program (formerly CNA) during spring semester of the 20-21 school year. It was a first of it's kind to meet the needs of students that were willing to put in extra hours and earn a certification. Traditionally students earn this certification in the Medical Careers(Honors) program of study.
WOOT WOOT!
A special thank you to Ms. Cuthbert and Ms. Krenz for being fabulous instructors.

What made you sign up for the NAR program? I signed up for the NAR program because I saw a great opportunity for me to start my career. This program led me through what I want to do for my future and it helped me walk a couple steps into the medical field. Another reason why I joined the NAR program is because I love helping people and making a difference in their life and a difference in my life as well.
What was a highlight, memory, something new you learned?
The highlight of doing this program was meeting new people from different schools, learning new skills and applying those skills. My favorite memory from this program is dressing up like patient, it was really fun and funny, because the clothing was really baggy and big and it made us feel like little kids again. I learned all of the hands on skills needed for this career. I never knew how to do partial bathing on a patient, I never knew how to put clothing on a patient if they have had a stroke, I never knew how to take a pulse or blood pressure. This program was amazing.
What will you do now with your new skills? I am going to keep learning! I am plan on taking more classes to have more skills for my medical career.
Tell us about your instructors at 916 Career & Tech:
My instructors at 916 were really nice, they were very understanding and very helpful, they went at a good pace when teaching, they were funny, and very welcoming.
What would you say to your peers who might be interested in the medical field? I would say that doing the NAR program is a very good start to take a step into the medical field. When you're done with your NAR program you can take another step and then build up to where you want to be with your career.
Taking the NAR program is something I would never regret doing. I am thankful that I did this program and thankful to my instructor for getting me this far, and I am thankful for the people that reached out to us for this opportunity.

What made you sign up for the NAR program?
I signed up for the NAR program because I want to be a registered nurse. I thought that joining the NAR program would be very helpful for my future career. I had no experience in the medical field and the NAR program was a great start.
What was a highlight, memory, something new you learned?
A highlight of the NAR program was meeting new people. I met many new people who went to Tartan. We all had the same goal of wanting to do something in the medical field. Working with them towards the same goal was something very fun for me. Learning the skills needed to be a nursing assistant would have not been possible without my classmates who were my patients that I could practice my skills on. I learned how to dress, feed, and bathe residents/patients and so much more that can really help me succeed not just as a nursing assistant but throughout my whole career in the medical field.
What will you do now with your new skills?
I will use my new skills to care for residents/patients. I plan to continue learning and advanced my skills. Right now, I am working as a nursing assistant at a care center screening people for COVID-19 at the front desk. Once I turn 18, (soon!) I can use the mechanical lift and continue as a nursing assistant. I am also a PSEO student at Metropolitan State University trying to get all my prerequisites for nursing school done so that I can save money and get ahead!
Tell us about your instructors at 916 Career & Tech:
I owe so much to the instructors at 916!!! They are the reason I passed the CNA exam! They prepared me so much and taught me the skills until I was confident. They were both super fun but also very helpful which is why I enjoyed the NAR program so much. I am so grateful that they were my instructors!
What would you say to your peers who might be interested in the medical field?
If you are interested in the medical field, research programs that offer NAR certification! Explore what interests you! It can be life changing. You either will deepen your interest in the medical field or actually find out that maybe the medical field is not for you. If you find that the medical field is not for you, there are so many more classes at 916 that you can take. Joining the NAR program will not hurt you but only help you!
