The Calming Corner ~ Social-Emotional and Community Supports
September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month
Suicidal thoughts, much like mental health conditions, can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, or background. In fact, suicide is often the result of an untreated mental health condition. Suicidal thoughts, although common, should not be considered normal and often indicate more serious issues.
September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. It is a time to raise awareness, shift public perception, and share vital information on this stigmatized, and often taboo, topic. If you are worried about yourself or a loved one, text or call 9-8-8 (National Suicide Prevention Lifeline). For Spanish, dial 1-888-628-9454. For emergencies, dial 9-1-1.
Talking to children about someone who died by suicide can feel like an overwhelming undertaking. These guidelines offer suggestions based on the age of the child.
Scarlett Stoppa, LCSW, is the Mental Health Specialist on staff at Blanche Sprentz. If you have mental health concerns regarding your student, she can help connect you to therapeutic resources. Call 916-294-9110 x 640329 or email sstoppa@fcusd.org for more information. Alternatively, FCUSD Students and families can find community mental support through CareSolace.
