Happy Valentine's Day

Hello Phoenix families,


Today marks the halfway point in February, where does the time go?


I failed to mention last week that it was National Counselor's week. As you know, we have the absolute BEST counselor here at HSMC. Mrs. McIntosh has been with the district for over 30 years and the enthusiasm she shows for her job and the students is as intense as it was the first day she became an educator. The entire HSMC community stands in awe of her dedication, knowledge, compassion, and friendly presence each and every day we are lucky enough to have her on our campus. A belated happy counselor's week Mrs. McIntosh, we do not know what we would do without you.


This week is Valentine's Spirit Week, there is a sea of red, pink, and white on campus today. Check out the events for the rest of the week on the poster below. I know Dr. Oplustic is most excited for pajama day!

Mask Mandate

We have had some questions about the fact that the State of California is expected to end the indoor mask mandate this week.


It is important to note that today the State announced that although the current statewide mask mandate lifts tomorrow for vaccinated individuals, the current statewide mandate requiring masking in schools for students and educators remains in place. It is expected that the VCCCD Chancellor's office will be sending out a communication (complying with this State directive) reiterating that all faculty, students, and community members will be required to wear a mask indoors. At this time, we will continue to wear masks inside classrooms and in the office. If any of the directives change, we will inform the community as soon as possible.

College Board SAT EXAM

Does the thought of college planning feel a bit daunting? We have a fix for that. The SAT offers custom test prep, free practice tests, and resources you can use at your own pace . As a result, you can focus on one section at a time and improve your skills where you need them most.


Many students in the class of 2023 will take the SAT once this spring and then again this coming summer or fall. While the SAT is optional for many colleges, it still helps you stand out on those college applications. Go at your own pace, and test when you’re ready. Once you do, the SAT can show how you’re focused, ready to work, and invested in your education.

BRITE (Building Resilience & Inclusion Through Engagement)

February 14th BRITE will be in the HSMC lunch area providing touch stones and the material to decorate and be creative. The stones can be kept or given away to someone you cherish.

Selective Service Reminder

Under current law all male US citizens between 18–25 years of age are required to register with the Selective Service within 30 days of their 18th birthday. In addition, non-US citizen men between the ages of 18 and 25 (inclusive) living in the United States must register.

A young man who fails to register with Selective Service may be ineligible for opportunities that may be important to his future. He must register to be eligible for federal student financial aid, state-funded student financial aid in many states, most federal employment, some state employment, security clearance for contractors, job training under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (formerly known as the Workforce Investment Act), and U.S. citizenship for immigrant men.

Freshmen Field Trip

Our 9th grade class will participate in a docent-led tour of the San Buenaventura Mission in Ventura on Wednesday February 16th. This tour will give our students an authentic understanding of life at the San Buenaventura Mission.


Bus transportation will be provided for our students to and from the HSMC campus and the Mission. A grab-and-go lunch will be provided for your child. The bus will leave HSMC no later than 8:15am and return to school by the end of the normal school day.


Please be sure your student arrives at HSMC no later than 8:00am on Wednesday February 16th. The bus will depart promptly at 8:15am and is not able to wait for late arriving students. Students should wear comfortable walking shoes, active wear, sunscreen, and a hat. Students should bring a water bottle and their phone or camera for pictures. Students will not need to bring other school supplies for their high school classes to school on this day. Students will have a shortened Theater class, please make sure they bring any supplies the theater teacher requires.

Valentine’s Day Spirit Week This Week!

Valentine's Day is coming soon and school spirit is in the air! Please dress up for Valentine's Spirit week to show you care! Those who participate will get candy during lunch breaks.

Valentine's Day Movie Night on Thursday February 17th at 6:30pm

Please join us for a Valentine's Day Movie Night on Thursday February 17th at 6:30pm on the HSMC campus. The film shown will be Disney's Tangled. Popcorn, candy, and water will be provided. Please bring your own chairs and blankets to sit on. Hope to see you there!

8th Annual Phoenix Rising Talent Show and Silent Auction Friday March 18th at 6pm

Please join us for the 8th Annual Phoenix Rising Talent Show and Silent Auction Friday March 18th at 6pm to see our amazing students display their talents! The show will be held in the Forum at Moorpark College. Admission and parking are FREE! Auditions for students will be held on Friday February 18th at 12pm. Silent Auction Donations Needed

The High School at Moorpark College will be hosting our 9th annual Talent Show and Silent Auction this year in March 2022. We are currently soliciting donations from local businesses and entertainment venues to auction during our show. In exchange for donations, the High School at Moorpark College can provide a Tax ID number for tax exemptions, and free advertising for participating businesses in our talent show program and our online auction. Grad Bash Universal Friday May 13- Saturday May 14 (Juniors and Seniors)

Grad Bash Universal is celebrating our Juniors and seniors! Students will have access to most rides and attractions at Universal Studios Hollywood, along with live DJs and multiple dance parties throughout the park. There will also be special graduation-themed photo ops throughout the park.

This is an overnight event that will run from Friday May 13 at 4pm-Saturday May 14 at 2am. Tickets for Grad Bash will go on sale in the HSMC office April 4-27th for $80 each. Tickets include bus transportation to the park. Students who purchased Grad Bash tickets with a Spirit Pack in October will not need to purchase additional tickets. Prom at the Reagan Library April 22, 2022 6-11pm (Juniors and Seniors)

This year our junior and senior prom will be held on the Ruwe Terrace of the beautiful Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley on Friday April 22nd from 6-11pm. This year’s theme is Balle Classique (Classic Ball). A tour of the Reagan special exhibits, as well as beverages, coffee, and desserts will be included in admission. Prom tickets can be purchased in the HSMC office March 14-31st for $75 each. Students who purchased prom tickets with a Spirit Pack in October will not need to purchase additional tickets. HSMC students who wish to bring guests to prom will need to fill out a guest form that can be obtained from the HSMC office for each guest. Guests must be under 21 years old. COVID-19 GUIDELINES: To enter the event, attendees must bring proof of vaccination, either a physical vaccination card, a picture of their vaccination card, or a digital vaccination record, or health care document showing vaccination status, along with photo ID. Children under the age of 12 and unvaccinated persons must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within three days prior to the event they’re attending at the Reagan Library or Reagan Institute. This policy also applies to all speakers and performers associated with the event, as well as all staff. Any attendee who arrives at registration check-in without proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test performed within the past 3 days will not be admitted into the event.

We host lessons during our meetings, and coding challenges for each member to participate in! Tabletop Roleplay Game Club (TTRPG)

TTRPG is a club that promotes creativity through playing games like Dungeons and Dragons. You can play an exotic spellcaster who wishes to rule the world with an iron fist or you can play Bob who wants to settle down on a farm with a loving family. No Experience with TTRPG? Doesn't matter! Our main goal is to just have fun so we welcome anyone who is open to playing no matter their experience!

Film and Photography Club

The film and photography club on the HSMC campus will have weekly themes, as well as an opportunity to present your photos/films every week. You can make them as funny or as serious as you would like. This club will differ from Mr. Hoobs' film class in that we will not be watching films, but shooting them, or, if that's not your style, just taking photos. The club will be meeting in TR-3 every friday from 12:00 - 12:40. This is a place where you can express your personal identity, while also creating a laid back environment to destress every week.
