In The Know
District handbook distribution - Handbooks have been mailed to the address on file for each active student in the student information system at the time the address list was created on August 25. We are sending you extra copies of the handbook to provide to new students who enroll. These should arrive at schools early next week. The PDF of the handbook is online at https://www.4j.lane.edu/communications/publications.
Library card application - The handbook includes an insert with a tear-out application for student library cards—thanks to our new partnership with the Eugene Public Library and Foundation to provide library cards free of charge to all students in 4J and Bethel schools, including those who live outside of the city limits (💕📚🎉🙌).
One-page calendar - The handbook includes the one-page school calendar. Since students are not in schools at the start of the school year, we have not printed large quantities of the block calendar to distribute. A printable and linkable version in English and Spanish (with a couple of small corrections) is at https://www.4j.lane.edu/calendars.
Free & reduced-price meals - Normally the school meal program application and/or information about how to apply is mailed to families as an insert in the district handbook. It is not included with the handbook this year due to the pandemic-related changes in school meal service, with free meals for all now extended through December. Information about the school meal program and a link to the online application form are at https://www.4j.lane.edu/nutrition/freelunch.
Black Student Union, and Journalistic Learning Initiative
Lane ESD has engaged the Journalistic Learning Initiative (JLI) nonprofit organization to support our work to improve academic achievement for African American students countywide, in accordance with Oregon's Student Success Act (HB 3427) and the African/American Black Student Success Plan (HB 2016).
Part of the work includes supporting Black Student Union (BSU) members from your and several other high schools across the county in producing their own magazine (publication). Because of COVID-19, the project was rescheduled from spring and will begin this October.

Kudos
Front Office - Thank you for attending to the last push on Technology distribution. The schedule was long and often. You weathered smoke, rain, and a steady rush. Thank you fo rthe late hours and the 'espirit de corps' that is needed in tough times. Your positive attitude and can-do approach were so appreciated.
I cannot say enough about Debbie Levy for her help and support with Canvas. You have held the collective frustration of staff and responded with grace and compassion. Thank you again for all of your help.
Keith Fjordbeck and custodial crew, thank you for your help and support with the Red Cross this week and next. You are helping to make sure that displaced families and community are getting their needs met. I am very appreciative of your work and focus.
