A Booth Free School Inventor
Congratulations to fifth grader, Jade Santos!
Jade's invention, Mask-R-Aid, has been sent onto the 2021 Virtual Invention Convention US Nationals event, hosted by The Henry Ford Museum. Jade is one of 64 inventors invited to represent Connecticut. A total of 6,000 students across the state participated in their local invention conventions and more than 500 advanced to the state final competition.
The Connecticut Invention Convention recently held its virtual award ceremony. In addition to winning at the State Finals, Jade won the Fitch-Briere Family Award. The Invention Convention U.S. Nationals will take place virtually on June 24th. We are so proud of Jade and wish her luck!
From Digital to Real
Cade Sivick tests a prototype of a grocery bag holder he designed for those who need to carry multiple bags for a long distance. The prototype was designed using 3D modeling software and printed on the Makerbot Replicator+ 3D printer.
Students in grades 6-8 Digital Design Lab classes explored bubble photography and the various ways to capture the shapes, including varying shutter speed, aperture, and the type of light reflecting on the surfaces.
Animal & Plant Science
Our Animal Science students are hard at work getting our animals ready for summer camp! Students are fulfilling Supervised Agricultural Experience requirements with care and training of the exotic animals.
Shepaug livestock will be boarding with our barn manager while final touches are put on the barn for the fall. Addy and Reina (alpacas pictured above) are sporting jazzy new haircuts given to them by the ninth graders as part of animal handling instruction. The alpacas will receive a full summer shearing next week.
Tyson Averill, of Averill Farms, led a grafting workshop for Plant Pathway students. Tyson shared equipment and techniques that have been on his family farm for over 200 years, as well as new (literally) cutting-edge technologies with our class. We have two Goldrush apple tree grafts setting in the greenhouse.

2021 Shepaug Summer Reading
Summer Reading Expectations
Here are the summer reading assignments for all incoming students in grades 6 through 12:
- Read one book from this list: 2021 Summer Reading Selections
Be prepared to discuss your selected book with a faculty or staff member and your peers in a September Advisory class. - Read a second book of your choice. Explore! Try a new genre! Challenge yourself or just escape into a comfortable classic. Find recommendations by clicking on the blue button below. Don't forget that eBooks and audiobooks are available on Overdrive!
- When we return to school, students will be asked to connect their free-choice summer reading to one of the Shepaug Learner Outcomes (Core Values and Guiding Beliefs). Textual evidence will be required to support your connection, so you may want to take brief notes as you read. The book and your notes may be used as you craft your response in class.
The Shepaug Learner Outcomes are as follows: Engaging in the Creative Process, Solving Problems, Defending Conclusions and Judgments, and Answering a Call to Citizenship.
