Middle School Students Participate in Third Annual Veterans Day Essay Contest
Medina City Schools’ students in grades sixth through eighth recently had the opportunity to participate in the Third Annual Veterans Day Essay Contest to address the question, What Does Veterans Day Mean To Me? This was a collaborative effort between the District and American Legion Local Post 202.
Eight members of the Post along with Medina City Schools’ Board of Education member Ron Ross carefully read more than 360 entries. “Some of the entries submitted brought us to tears,” said Dave Taylor, Essay Project Officer for Legion Post 202.
This year’s winners were:
6th Grade
1st Place: Macie Tighe Claggett Middle School
2nd Place: Samantha Aller A.I. Root Middle School
3rd Place: Griffin Oswald Claggett Middle School
7th Grade
1st Place: Stella Allen Claggett Middle School
2nd Place: Dublyn Alt Claggett Middle School
3rd Place: Ella James A.I. Root Middle School
8th Grade
1st Place: Carson Henning Claggett Middle School
2nd Place: Andrew Zeisel Claggett Middle School
3rd Place: Kori Swihart Claggett Middle School
The essays were judged by the eight members of the Legion and Board member Ron Ross. A rubric focusing on four areas was used to determine the winners: Purpose/Focus, Organization, Elaboration, and Mechanics. Collectively, the judges reviewed each entry selecting the first round of essays that fit the rubric. They were then passed on to a different evaluator for a second reading. To make the final decision to determine the winning essays, the judges listened intently as the essays were read aloud to select by majority vote first, second, and third places in each of the three grade levels.
Each winner received a certificate and monetary award thanks to the generosity of Board member Ron Ross and his wife Kathy. In addition, each of the winning students had the opportunity to present their essays to the Medina City Schools Board of Education during their regular meeting on Monday, November 15. “We are very grateful for this collaborative effort with our local Veterans. The project provides our students with an opportunity to reflect and honor our Veterans while practicing their writing as well as their public speaking skills,” said Amy Busby, Director of Community Relations for Medina City Schools.

Medina High School Hosts Engineering Expo
The second Engineering Expo for students and families in grades six through twelve was held on November 17th at the Medina High School media center. The Engineering Expo is co-sponsored by the Medina County Economic Development Corporation. The evening began with a short presentation from Jacob Knechtel (MHS class of 2013) and Brice Shipe (MHS class of 2017) describing their pathway through high school, the Medina County Career Center, and the University of Akron.
Knechtel graduated with a Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering and is currently employed as a mechanical engineer at Pneumatic Scale Angelus. Shipe is currently completing his studies in Mechanical Engineering Technologies. Their experiences allowed students to understand the differences between the two careers.
The remainder of the evening allowed students to visit with 19 different Medina County engineers to discover the different aspects of their jobs. Kevin Calmer (MHS class of 2012) who currently works as an aerospace engineer for ZIN Technologies in partnership with NASA Glenn Research Center, was also among the engineers presenting. In addition to the County engineers, Medina High School’s Industrial Arts and Engineering department gave students a chance to see potential courses for their future elective credits.
Medina High School is planning a Medical and Healthcare evening on Wednesday, February 9, 2022. Those interested in being a presenter should contact Kathy Breitenbucher, Medina County Economic Development Corporation at kathyb@medinacounty.org.
Medina High School Student Council Attends Service Day Learning About Recycling
On Sunday, November 14, 2021, Medina High School Student Council met for a service day to learn about recycling disposable water bottles and micro and macro plastic waste. The day began with a brainstorming session on the good and the bad of disposable water bottles. Mrs. Niemantsverdreit, a science teacher at Medina High School, presented an interactive lab on microplastics and water contamination. The students had a great time using microscopes and competing for prizes as they learned about the dangers of microplastics in our water system.
A video on the recycling efforts in Côte d'Ivoire, Africa was shared with attendees demonstrating a great women’s initiative program recycling plastic bottles and turning them into bricks used to build schools. The students attending thoroughly enjoyed a discussion with Dr. Justin Brantner, a science teacher at the high school, covering macroplastics and the dangers of plastics in our oceans and waterways.
These students began a campaign to encourage the recycling of plastic bottles and using reusable water bottles at school by making posters and creating videos for morning announcements. The service goal is to bring awareness to students about recycling and reducing plastic waste.
Senior Class President Alex Henry stated, “I had such a fun time and the service day opened my eyes to the extremely harmful effects of plastic. I really hope the campaign reaches the students and encourages them to recycle.” Junior Paul Ceccoli commented, “I learned a lot about recycling (efforts) in Africa and how the program worked from collecting the bottles to making the bricks. It is an amazing program that we should support as much as possible.”
Student Council has been hard at work creating Medina-themed coasters to sell during lunch periods as a fundraising effort to help the Côte d'Ivoire program with all proceeds going to Unicef to help in Africa.

Boosters Corner
Celebrating fifty years is usually observed with a golden gift. But this year, Dr. Bill Tuchek was able to celebrate his golden anniversary with a coin flip. Tuchek served as the Medina Athletic Boosters President for seven years and celebrated his 50th anniversary with the Boosters when he returned for the Medina home football playoff game on October 29th to flip the coin. How excited was Dr. Tuchek to be part of the Bees home playoff game—he flew back to Medina from Arizona just for the event.
Tuchek helped raise the funds to build Ken Dukes Stadium, worked in the press box for over 30 years in various duties, and continues to administrate the Ken Dukes Scholarship Fund to this day. In an article in the Medina Weekly News, Tuchek said, “It felt wonderful. It was an extreme honor.”
The Boosters have also partnered with the Athletic Department and the Positive Coaching Alliance to bring workshops into MHS to help our student-athletes to become better leaders on and off the field. The first workshop was held on November 23rd and will continue throughout the year. A special thank you to LLA Therapy for their generous support of this program.
The Boosters would also like to give a big congratulations to all our fall student-athletes on their success during the season! We look forward to another great sports season this winter!
