Principal's Message
Dear Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion families,
I would like to thank all of our students, teachers, and staff for persevering and remaining focused and on task during a very hot week at school last week. I would also like to thank the parents for your understanding about rescheduling our Back to School Night to this Wednesday, September 14th from 6:00-7:30pm in person. Please make transportation arrangements for the PM Pick Up as that will be a special Early Dismissal Day(1:25pm). For Back to School Night, the Parents/Guardians should report directly to the teacher's classrooms at 6:00PM(we prefer that you do not bring your children if at all possible). Pati and I will be doing a short Introduction/Welcoming via Zoom using this Back to School Night Slide Deck that the teachers will show on the TV Monitors to parents in the classroom. The teachers will then present their Back To School expectations where they will explain important aspects of what and how they will be teaching and how you can help your child succeed. A reminder to parents that Back to School Night is not a time for individual parent teacher conferences about specific needs for your child, but rather an overview of curricula, homework, rules and expectations for the year. If you have more specific questions about how to help your child, please email your teacher(s).
Please help me to congratulate Maestras Silvia Antonelli and Yesenia Bravo as they both recently moved into new homes in Redwood City thanks to a wonderful program through Habitat for Humanity. As you are aware, the high housing costs in the Bay Area is one of the main reasons teachers can not afford to live and work here which makes this story remarkable!
Enrichment Schedules for Trimester 1
We are fortunate to have a high quality Spanish immersion program where students are learning in two languages, but were you aware that our students also participate in a robust Enrichment program? The Enrichment Classes rotate by Trimester:
- Modern Dance with Danny Giray: Our 4th an 5th graders started last week with Danny G and the Dance Class. This year the weekly Dance Classes will be returning to do a special culminating night performance at Carrington Hall on the Sequoia High School campus. The students will have the experience of performing on a real stage in front of an audience full of family and friends.
- Music For Minors: The vocal music enrichment begins next week for TK, K, 1st grade classrooms with Maestra Lidia who is bilingual in Spanish/English. The Music for Minors curriculum is sequential and varied, including visual aids, props, and instruments. Lessons include singing, listening, reading, theory, movement, dancing, and playing rhythm instruments and recorders. Our volunteer and professional teachers are trained in general music, recorders, and classroom management.
- Art4Schools: Art classes begin next week for the 2nd/3rd grade classrooms. The program consists of in-depth, skill-building and sequential art lessons that meet the California State Visual and Performing Arts Standards for Art. Classes and content is appropriate for each grade level. Taught by professional CSMA visual arts instructors, these art classes coordinate with each classroom’s curriculum to become an integral part of the school day.
Additionally, all classes will be going to the Garden and Steam Lab monthly. Our classroom teachers will be planning and coordinating with both the Garden and STEAM lab teachers for additional times depending on the Integrated Unit of Study in Science or Social Studies.
We want to make sure that everyone is aware that your donations to Unidos PTO directly fund Enrichment at Adelante Selby for Dance, Garden, and the new Art4Schools program.
i-Ready Grades 1st-5th
This week we will begin assessing(testing) students in Grades 1st-5th using a diagnostic test called i-Ready. Students in Grades 1st-5th will be assessed in Math in Spanish using i-Ready and Grades 2nd-5th will be assessed in Reading in English using i-Ready. The i-Ready Diagnostic is given three times over the school year (Fall, Winter, Spring) district wide. The assessment information will help teachers plan and design instruction and also help to group students. The diagnostic will also tailor and differentiate i-Ready lessons for students based on the results. Students may access the i-Ready lessons via Clever. It is recommended that students complete 60-100 minutes weekly of the i-Ready lessons. Here is a short video from Curriculum Associates for parents: iReady video for parents.
Take Home Reading Program K-3rd Grades
Families in Kindergarten through 3rd grade: Keep an eye out in the coming weeks for a Take Home Reading bag to come home with your students. Each student will receive 4 books per week to read at home, and will receive a prize each time they read 20 books. If you want to volunteer to help with the book bags for your classroom, please sign up with your teacher during Back to School Night.
School Site Council information
The School Site Council oversees our school's Site Plan for Student Achievement(SPSA), how we spend our Measure U (parcel tax) dollars and site discretionary funds, and helps make other decisions related to programs at our school. We meet the third Wednesday of each month from 3:00-5:00pm.
We need five official parents/guardians to be part of our Site Council and have at least 1 vacancy for parents this year. Others not elected are welcome to join us in our meetings, but may not be part of the official votes. If you are interested in being an official part of our School Site Council this year, please fill out the form below. Interested individuals will be asked to complete a short paragraph about you for our ballots in mid September. Voting will be included in our weekly messages.

ELAC
The English Language Advisory Council meets monthly at 8:45AM by the Library for parents of students that are learning English as a Second Language. The meetings are conducted in Spanish. The council reviews the School Site Plan for Student Achievement and monitors progress of English Language Learners. We do elect officers and follow an Agenda for every meeting. We would like to invite more parents to attend. Our next ELAC meeting is Monday, September 19th at 8:45AM by the Library in the Amphitheater.

Unidos PTO: Direct Drive, Volunteers, Book Fair, and Spirit Wear
Please make a donation to Unidos PTO Direct Drive fundraiser which opens officially this Wednesday, September 14th. Through Unidos, every student at Adelante Selby receives valuable enrichment programs, including art, dance, and garden classes. We also fund social emotional help, literacy programs, field trips, classroom equipment, teacher appreciation, community events, and more. Most of the funding for these programs comes from direct donations. Employer matching may be available, and donations are tax deductible. During the 2022/23 school year, Unidos will spend approximately $350 per student which is the suggested donation amount. We understand these past two years have been challenging. School Play/Musical "The Music Man Kids" Sign Up Information:
Adelante-Selby families, the school Play/Musical The Music Man Kids Registration is now open. We will continue our wonderful partnership with San Carlos Children's Theater for this production. Third through Fifth Graders will make up the Main Cast while Kindergarten through 2nd graders will participate in the Ensemble.

Lost and Found
We already have an overflowing Lost and Found large wooden box/clothing rack by the office. Please stop by and claim any lost item: sweaters, sweatshirts, lunch boxes, and water bottles. Parents another reminder that it is very helpful to label/put your child's name on your child's lunch box, water bottle, and sweaters/jackets as students sometimes forget and leave them outside.
Child Nutrition Services: September Breakfast and Lunch Menus
A healthy body fosters a healthy and focused mind. Well-rounded meals served in RCSD school cafeterias are created using USDA nutrition guidelines as well as “kid-approved” recipes. Whole grains, milk, fresh produce, protein, and healthy fats containing Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are the stars of the breakfast and lunch menu items. Studies show that good eating habits and healthy behaviors are connected to academic achievement. Meals provided by Child Nutrition Services help to shape lifelong healthy habits. All students have the opportunity to eat breakfast and lunch for free again this year through our Child Nutrition Services.

2022-23 COVID Protocols in Our School
The Redwood City School District (RCSD) is following recommendations from the San Mateo County Office of Education’s (SMCOE) COVID-19 Safe Schools Framework, which was developed for 2022-23 in consultation with San Mateo County Health (SMCH), reflecting guidance for schools and districts including from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). You can find our District’s 2022-23 protocols on the RCSD website here.
Highlights from the District Protocols:
- Masking is strongly recommended for both students and staff indoors, but not required.
- Weekly Covid testing for students and staff is no longer offered at our school.
- Use this LINK to report if your child(ren) tests positive
- There will be school wide general notification of positive case(s) via email/text message.
- We are no longer requiring Wellness Checks for students.
- Parent Volunteers are not allowed to volunteer in classrooms for the first month of school.
You can expect to receive additional information about our District’s protocols throughout the school year.

Our school office is now open and the office hours are 8:00-4:00pm. Entering the office, all visitors it is highly recommended that you:
- wear a mask
- use hand disinfectant when entering the office
