Science

5th Grade

We will be finishing up our study of planets and dwarf planets soon. We are getting ready to expand our study of space to include meteoroids, meteors, asteroids and comets!

6th Grade

We have finally ended our long adventure in earth science studies and we are ready to get microscopic with cells. This month we will learn about cell theory, famous cell theorists, and all the odds and ends of the complex organization of a living species.

5th Grade

Starting this month, and for the rest of the quarter, the 5th Graders will be studying the reasons behind the European Exploration of the Western Hemisphere.


They will be making connections with all the lasting influences and impacts that the exploration and colonization had on the Western Hemisphere. They will learn about the Columbian Exchange, the mystery behind the Lost Colony of Roanoke, the first successful settlement of Jamestown, as well as the Plymouth Colony.

6th Grade

The 6th Graders will be spending the rest of the third quarter diving into the Ancient Civilizations of Egypt, Mesopotamia, India and China. We will look at each civilizations' unique government, economic system, social structure, religion, technologies and agricultural practices and products that flourished as a result of favorable geographic characteristics. The cultural practices and products of these early civilizations can be used to help understand the Eastern Hemisphere today.

5th /6th ELA

5th Grade

5th Grade students are/will be working on:


  • Drawing on information from multiple print sources

  • Writing informative essays based on paired passages

  • Perfect verb tenses

  • Figurative language review

6th Grade

6th Grade students are/will be working on:


  • Writing informational passages based on multiple texts

  • Summarization of text in annotation

  • Review of Rhyme Scheme in poetry

Math

5th Grade

n Grade 5, students extend their understanding of fraction operations by using equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators. In Chapter 6, students learn to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators using models and/or equations to represent the problem. They use benchmark fractions to estimate sums and differences, and they find equivalent fractions with common denominators. They also use patterns to write a rule to describe a sequence of fractions. Understanding patterns enables students to discover numerical relationships and sets the foundations for work with functions in later grades.


In Chapter 7, students investigate multiplication of fractions by whole numbers and use models to learn how to multiply fractions by fractions and mixed numbers. Students learn to relate multiplication to scaling and to predict the relative sizes of factors and products

6th Grade

6th Graders in Unit 5 will learn about:

* writing and solving one-step equations and inequalities

* rational numbers as locations on number lines

*signs of numbers in ordered pairs as indicating locations in quadrants of the coordinate plane
