A Message from our OCSN Coordinator
I wanted to take the time to re-introduce myself. My name is Addison Huss and I am the OCSN (Ottawa Community School Network) coordinator for Alward Elementary! I am here to be an additional friendly face and supportive adult in the school for your kiddos. I have my Bachelors degree in Social Work and am finishing my Masters degree in School Counseling. I have the opportunity to support students and families in any way they need.
I would love feedback and input from YOU, the ones who know your children the best, in order to offer the most comprehensive and effective services to our school. I have created a completely optional survey for you to complete if you choose. This survey is anonymous, with the opportunity to add your name and request follow up if desired. I would greatly appreciate your help and guidance in identifying ways to better the environment of our school for all students.
Thank you for your time, and Go Eagles!"
STEAM TidBits
We are digging deep into our Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math concepts while in STEAM.
Pre-K is working hard on their Living and Nonliving Things unit. They have been learning about the needs of living things and even created birdhouses.
Kindergarten students wrapped up their unit on Structure and Function by creating a paintbrush that could paint thin lines, thick lines, and dots. They loved seeing that everyone’s paintbrushes looked different (structure), but they were all able to paint (function).
First graders have been using Scratch Jr. to create their own animated stories. They are finishing up this unit by retelling the important details of the picture book Peanut Butter and Jellyfish. We are focusing on characters, setting, and sequence of events.
Second graders are wrapping up their Properties of Matter unit. They worked in groups to design a device that could keep popsicles frozen while sitting in the hot sun (under our heat lamps). All groups were incredibly successful as they utilized what they had learned about conductors and insulators to design their prototypes.
Third grade students are working hard to combine the simple machines they have built using our VEX materials into a complex machine that can lift and move a tiger to safety. They are also challenged to use what they have learned about magnetism and incorporate a magnet somewhere in their design.
Fourth graders are finishing up their vehicle restraint systems. They are working to add a seat belt, air bag, steel box, and a crumple zone to their VEX vehicles in order to reduce the impact of the collision on their very fragile passenger (a raw egg).
Finally, our fifth graders have finished building their robots and are working on making some modifications in order to move as much “radioactive” material as possible to safety zones within the time limit. They are excited to show off their creations and driving skills.
We have had a great time working through these first units of the school year and are excited to see all the learning that will continue to happen as we begin new units of study.
