TK/K/1/2 Vocal Music Spring Update
Happy Spring! In vocal music class during the months of March, April and May we honored Women's History month in March and Asian American and Pacific Islander history month in May by learning about influential female and AAPI musicians as well as learning songs highlighting Women's History and AAPI History. Be sure to look for "Ask Me" sheets for the songs below in the coming weeks, and ask your student to sing or dance the songs linked below!
If your student is in TK or Kindergarten, in March and April we learned about Gaby Moreno, a female singer-songwriter from Guatemala, and we danced to her song "Fronteras." In May, in honor of AAPI month, we have been learning about Chinese-American cellist Yo Yo Ma and listening and dancing to his performance of The Swan. We also learned Tongo, which is a song from Polynesia, and Se Se Se, which is a "Rock, Paper, Scissors" song from Japan. We also have been singing the songs My Name is Michael, Johnny Get Your Haircut, and the very fun song-game Tideo. Look for a song map of "Tideo" as well as an "Ask Me" sheet that was sent home with your student this past week!
If your student is in 1st grade, to honor Women's History month in March we learned about Selena, and danced to her song "Baila Esta Cumbia." In May, in honor of AAPI history, we have been performing a scarf dance to the traditional folk song from China "Picking Red Chestnuts." We also learned a folk song from the Philippines, Umupo Po Kayo. We also learned the echo songs Come Along and Oh, Ricka Bamboo. This month we have also learned the very fun song "Bow Wow Wow"--ask your child to play the game with you and to show you their "Ask Me" sheet that shows all of the songs listed here that was sent home this week!
If your student is in 2nd grade, to honor Women's History month in March we learned about Selena, and danced to her song "Baila Esta Cumbia." We also have been working hard practicing our rounds that we performed at the choir concert this month, "A Ram Sam Sam" from Morocco, Shalom Chaverim, in Hebrew, and "Frére Jacques," from France. Thank you to everyone to came to support their singers at our beautiful evening choir performance earlier in May! Also please ask your singer to show you their "Ask Me" sheet that was sent home this week or that will be sent home with them next week.
If you have any questions about the vocal music program, feel free to reach out directly to Ms. Koplinka-Loehr at: daniellekoplinkaloehr@ccusd.org. It has been a total joy to work with your incredible students this year. We hope you have fun listening to your students' wonderful singing voices and making music with them all summer long!

AAPI Lin Howe book purchase fundraiser
AAPI Lin Howe book purchase fundraiser will be live at Village Well the last 2 weeks of May from Wednesday, May 17 - Wednesday, May 31, 2023. “During the fundraiser window they should identify themselves as purchasing for the Lin Howe Fundraiser and their purchases will be rung up under that account and not under their personal accounts. At the end of the fundraiser we will calculate the total amount purchased and we will make a gift of 20% of that to the school, either in a check made out to the school or PTA, or in a gift card good for purchases here. If people want to participate by purchasing online, just have them put LIN HOWE FUNDRAISER into the instructions box and we will count it in the total from which we calculate our gift."

3rd and 4th Grade Families Interested in Instrumental Music 2023-2024
Hello 3rd and 4th Grade Families,
Last week, 3rd and 4th grade students attended music assemblies at the Robert Frost Auditorium.
Third grade students received "try it" workshops for various instruments through Symphonic Jazz Orchestra at their school site paid for by the Culver City Education Foundation. These workshops give students the opportunity to explore interest in different instruments and determine if they would like to participate in the instrumental music program.
We would like to invite all students and families to the Culver City High School Spring Music Concert at the Robert Frost Auditorium at 7pm on Friday, May 26h.
If your 3rd or 4th grade student is interested in participating in the Elementary Instrumental Music Program at their school, please complete the interest form below by June 5th. This will allow us to obtain and assign instruments over the summer to facilitate distribution at the start of the next school year 2023-2024. CCUSD Instrumental Music Interest Form (23-24)
CCUSD Instrumental Music Interest Form (23-24)
