This Week π
Here's what we focused on this week.
Reading: This week in reading, we learned about a new genre -narrative nonfiction! In narrative nonfiction books, the author gives true information about real things in order of time like a story. We enjoyed reading this new genre together, and we learned about cacti, oak trees, salmon, and eels through our texts this week. These books went along perfectly with what we are learning about in science!
Writing: This week, we learned about friendly letters. We learned that friendly letters have five parts: a heading (the date), a greeting, a body (the message), a closing, and our signature.
Math: This week in math we began working on adding two-digit numbers. We learned there are different ways to solve these problems. Pictures can help us with solving these problems. We can use base ten blocks to build the addends. We can also separate the tens and ones and add the tens together and add the ones. Then we put those two sums together. Another way to solve these problems is to go to the next ten. All of these strategies help us add two-digit numbers. We will continue practicing these skills next week.
Science: This week we learned what plants and animals need to survive. Plants need sunlight, air, and water to make their own food. They also need space to grow. Animals need air, food, and shelter to survive. Animals have to find their own food.

π Halloween Costumes
Our Halloween class party will be on Friday, October 27. A few reminders for Halloween costumes:
- Children are to WEAR THEIR COSTUMES TO SCHOOL and will keep them on throughout the day.
- Costumes should not impact the student's ability to be transported to school nor impact their ability to participate in our regular routines such as lunch, recess, and using the restroom independently as well as being able to sit at our tables or on the carpet.
- Costumes should be fun and appropriate as opposed to costumes that depict blood, violence, death, or gruesome in nature. Offensive costumes should not be worn and no weapons or fake blood should be brought to school.
- Masks are not permitted as part of the costume.
- Makeup or face paint should not be a part of your childβs costume for school.
- Please plan for costumes to be comfortable and not big and bulky, as students will be wearing them throughout the day.

π Reminders
Nightly Homework
Each night your child should read for at least 10 minutes and practice math facts for at least 5 minutes. A great way to practice math facts is using XtraMath.
In second grade, we work on mastering our basic addition and subtraction facts from 0-18 so they become automatic. Practicing facts for a few minutes every night will help us reach this goal! If you need flashcards, here are some that you can print and use at home.
Dismissal
Remember to use the PikMyKid app/website for any dismissal changes. I will be checking this each afternoon as verification for how each child will go home. Please make all changes before 2:45 PM.
