Notes from the Principal
We're off to a great start in 2023!
In academics, all juniors took the SAT as a part of Indiana's accountability model adopted summer of 2021. Students showed up and focused as we hoped and we look forward to respectable scores and remaining ranked near the top of all SE Indiana schools this spring. As with all things we do at EC, we're striving for the best.
In the arts, ISSMA competitors are in the midst of State competitions with choral students bringing home 19 golds and 1 silver two weekends ago and band 3 golds and 2 silvers this past weekend. Winter percussion took first this past weekend as well at Decatur Central's competition. Finally, in EC drama, Footloose is just around the corner with performances scheduled for March 10th, 11th, and 12th.
In athletics, 4 of 5 winter sports are EIAC champions. Wrestling won both sectional and regional crowns, and both boys and girls swimming finished their competitive seasons in Indianapolis on Saturday of the state championships. EC Dance is off to a great start in their competitive season as well.
Finally, Student Council continues their philanthropic efforts with an on-going "For The Kids" drive including a recent winter spirit week culminating in another $600 effort which brings their total to over $3,500 on their way to their goal of $10,000 this spring for the kids of St. Jude's. The giving spirit from students and staff alike continues to be something in which we can all take great pride.

Students of the Month
Josie Hartman
East Central High School is proud to announce Josephine Hartman as “Student of the Month”. Josephine “Josie” is the daughter of Philip and Kathy Hartman. She is a member of the National Honor Society and participates in FFA as the chapter president. In FFA she has won awards such as Star Green Hand and the Outstanding Junior Award. Roy Johnson, Teacher and FFA Advisor says, “Josie Hartman is a hard-working, goal oriented young lady who exemplifies the term servant leadership. She is dependable, and can always be counted on to get a job done. She is thought well of by her peers, and does an outstanding job of leading the East Central FFA as the 2022-2023 chapter president. A worthy student for a worthy honor.”
Josie’s teacher, Mrs. Huber stated, “Josie tackles issues and challenges with a positive, “I got this” attitude. It’s clear that she takes pride in her academics and has built positive relationships with her teachers and peers. Her sensitivity to the thoughts and feelings of others makes her an asset in any classroom. Josie’s hard work ethic motivates those around her to achieve their own goals”.
In 2022 she was named the Aurora Farmers Fair Queen. She is also a member of 4-H and through that organization she has been involved in activities at a nursing home to serve the community. Working at the YMCA she is also exposed to serving many individuals in the area community. Playing the guitar is one of her hobbies. In her spare time Josie likes working out, running and learning about health. Upon graduation she plans to attend college for nursing. She also cooks and bakes. She is a mentor to younger individuals including her cousins and family friends.
She states she has had many inspiring people in her life that have raised her to be the young woman she is today. Her advice to other students, “Don’t take for granted the opportunities that are right in front of you!”
Kya Miller
East Central High School is proud to announce Kya Miller as “Student of the Month”. She is the daughter of Monte and Hayley Miller. When Kya finishes high school she plans to take art classes and get a job working with children. Kya’s teacher Mrs. Ernst says, “Kya is one of the nicest students I have ever taught and a role model for the rest of the student body. She is always willing to help her classmates without being asked. She enjoys working with children and plans to work in a preschool or daycare in the future. Kya is a talented artist who enjoys drawing and crafting. We will miss her after she graduates but we are excited to see all she will accomplish in the future.”
At school Kya has been involved with the Trojan Cafe coffee cart taking orders and delivering sweet treats and drinks to ECHS staff each week. Assistant Principal, Mrs. Rosfeld said she looks forward to Kya’s delivery, “she simply is always happy and has the brightest and kindest smile!” Kya was named Queen of the Snowflake Dance in 2022 and can always be seen with that same smile that Mrs. Rosfeld spoke of. She has also participated in the Art Club.
Kya is in bible study and is also active in her christian youth group. In her spare time she enjoys agility training with her dog Cowboy and singing. She is interested in creating crafts and likes to draw. She has a website at kyamillerart.com and shares her talent for artistic creations on the greeting cards she has for sale there.
Kya would like to thank her teachers for everything they have taught her and also thanks her parents, “because they’ve always supported me”. The advice she gives other students about school is to work hard and have fun because it goes by quickly.

May 9th: Target date to release 2022-23 schedules to students. Last day to change schedules for 2022-23 will be May 25th.
Key items per grade:
Seniors: Remember, the FAFSA is now open until the April 15th deadline for Indiana. Students should follow up with counselors with admission issues or concerns and they will assist with contacting colleges with questions particular to the students’ needs.
Students should be receiving information from colleges on admission decisions. If a student is Waitlisted/Deferred please have the student follow up with their counselor. We can assist them with the required process. Counselors do not have access to admissions decisions and have to rely on information from the students. Students should also follow all deadlines for housing and accepting admission with the college of their choice.
Scholarship applications are continuously sent to students in their school email. Please encourage them to read through all information as some applications are only for EC students. The students that are selected for scholarships are invited to attend the Senior Scholarship Awards program on May 10th at 6:30pm in the Performing Arts Center. Again they will receive an invitation at the beginning of May up until the date of the event if they are selected as a winner for a scholarship from a local sponsor.
National Honor Society will hold the recognition night for the Seniors and Juniors on April 12th at 6:30 pm in the Performing Arts Center. Students will receive an invitation if they are expected to attend from the NHS sponsor: Mrs. Ketcham.
Seniors who are undecided about what to study after high school are encouraged to connect with Ivy Tech Community College’s Associate Accelerated Program (ASAP). This program helps high school graduates earn an Associate’s Degree in just 11 months and prepares them to transfer to a four-year college to earn their Bachelor's Degree.
Juniors: SAT School Day: New required test for all juniors in the state of Indiana is the SAT that will be given during the school day on March 1, 2023. This test is free and used by the state for school accountability. The benefit of the test is that students will be able to use this score report for college applications. Students will receive testing tickets for room assignments prior to 3/1.
National Honor Society will hold the recognition night for the Seniors and Juniors on April 12th at 6:30 pm in the Performing Arts Center. Students will receive an invitation if they are expected to attend from the NHS sponsor: Mrs. Ketcham.
Sophomores and Freshman: Scheduling will be completed by the end of January for the following year with changes accepted until the end of the year. Students should be focusing on grades and career/college exploration. Once sophomore PSAT scores are received, results will be reviewed in the classroom along with additional supports for SAT/ACT test prep.
As always we are available to meet with students individually to support academic and emotional needs. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns.

Computer Science 2-Professionalism in Coding through the lens of Gaming! Mrs. Hutzel’s Computer Science 2-students have worked hard this year to get to an exciting unit in their learning… Professionalism in Coding through the lens of Gaming. Currently, students are learning about the SDLC(Software Development Life Cycle) and what professionals in industry go through to create and deliver the apps and games that they interact with every day. To practice their skills all Computer Science 2 students are researching, designing, developing, testing, and deploying their own versions of ‘The World’s Hardest Game’ and having so much fun while doing it! Pictured: Ben Peterson, Logan Hicks, Bri Kirk, Emily Dehne Trojan Exchange-The Trojan Exchange students have been busy working on our upcoming Spring Sale (February 26 - March 11) and planning for our Trojan Toss Corn Hole Tournament that will be held on April 23. ENGINEERING and TECHNOLOGY
The students in Engineering Essentials and Introduction to Engineering and Design have been
working on a Puzzle Cube Project for a few weeks now. Throughout this project, they have
made isometric sketches of puzzle cube ideas, then brainstormed ideas for how the cubes
would fit together. After they found different combinations they had to model their puzzle cubes on Inventor and then learn how to assemble the parts together. This project also focuses on product quality, the students had to measure each of their 27 cubes and perform a statistical analysis on Microsoft Excel to ensure that the blocks that they chose would work before gluing the cubes together. Once they get their cubes together and colored they will design a container for the puzzle cubes to go into. This project has hit many of the skills that we practiced earlier in the year and so far the students are doing a great job.
The Civil Engineering class has spent the majority of the last couple weeks working on a group project in designing and modeling an abandoned factory remodel. The challenge for the students is to take an over 9,000 square feet abandoned factory and turn it into something that will benefit the community. So far the students have been coming up with some great ideas and have been working on creating floor plans, learning about commercial wall and roof types then implementing them into their projects, and modeling their ideas on Revit. I cannot wait to see how this project turns out.
The Computer-aided-Design classes just finished up a CAD Housing Design Challenge that
they have been working on for the majority of February. In this challenge, the students had to
choose a house that they liked from floorplans.com and try to replicate it on Revit. The students goal was to create the 3D model of their house as close as possible to the real house. This challenge is not easy because every student picked a house that they liked and they may not have ever used some of the tools needed on Revit to create them, so it was definitely a great learning experience. Overall, the students did a great job and I could not believe how close some of the students got on both the exterior and interior of these houses. A few examples are posted below. Along with modeling the house the students also created a digital portfolio with a lot of documentation items including renderings of the exterior and interior of the house, floor plans, elevation views, and room/window/door schedules.
English
Here are some of the things that are happening in Quarter 3. English 9 classes are finishing up the holiday research projects, having learned how to properly imbed quotes, summarize and paraphrase information, and then blend it all into a well-written essay with an MLA works cited. These are skills they will continue to use throughout their high school careers. In Mrs. Tucker’s English 9 class, Gabe Lacey won the Membean #ContextCluesChallenge, using the vocabulary word impact. His context clue hashtags were: #ThenItHitMe, #CrashCourse, #PotentialEnergy, #BigInfluence. Congratulations to Gabe! In English 10 classes, students are studying the Holocaust while reading Elie Wiesel’s Night. In addition to preparing for the SAT on March 1 with weekly vocabulary practice, English 11 is learning about the disillusionment of the American Dream during their study of The Great Gatsby. Finally, English 12 is in the midst of the Victorian era and studying the methods of deduction and inference while enjoying some stories about Sherlock Holmes. Soon, they will be solving mysteries of their own. Finally, congratulations are in order for English teacher Mr. Meiners and Mrs. Tucker for winning Winter Homecoming Faculty Royalty. Overall, February was a great month, and we are looking forward to a well-deserved Spring Break.

Ceramic students got to look at teapots through time and critiqued modern teapot examples and compare them to more traditional designs. The students implemented the appropriate hand building techniques to design a lid, handle, spout, and overall design to function as a teapot with a more contemporary design. The students used sculptural methods and glazing techniques to finish out their teapots. Below are some of the finished examples.
In Painting class, students created a Batik painting, which is a "resist" process for making designs on fabric. The students used wax to prevent dye from penetrating the cloth, leaving "blank" areas in the dyed fabric. The process, wax resist then dye, was repeated over and over to create complex multicolored designs.
Students also made their batik paintings especially unique due to how certain wax blends will "crackle" during handling, allowing lines of color to come through on resisted areas. Painting students used cotton fabric and the students could either take their finished fabric paintings and stitch them into a pillow or frame up their Batik painting. See below some examples.

More than a “Day of Love” in spanish world
February 14, is “El Dia Del Amor” and is celebrated in Hispanic countries in a similar way as to the rest of the world, flowers, chocolate, cards. However in Spanish countries we celebrate friendship as well as romance on “ El Dia de la Amistad”, where a greater emphasis is put on celebrating friendship. Therefore, Hispanics send cards, flowers, balloons and candy to their friends as well.
Spanish students had so much fun, writing stories using heart candies, doing crossword puzzles to learn the vocabulary of love, and making cards for friends and loved ones.
The Spanish club also celebrated el Dia del amor y la Amistad and they decorated rocks for their friends with Spanish messages.
¡ Feliz Dia del amor y de la Amistad !
Math
In Mr. Moorman’s Precalculus Honors classes, students have been working on analytic trigonometry. In the current unit, students have learned to build upon skills used in Algebra and Geometry. This involves verifying trigonomic functions, and using formulas such as sum and difference, power reducing, and product-to-sum. Students have also been learning specific properties and functions of the unit circle to solve trigonomic based functions. Using these properties students have learned how to solve a multitude of problems in preparation for calculus in the upcoming year.
