DIY fishleather

Learn how to make a high-quality product (fish leather) from 100% waste material (fish skin). In both these two-day workshops you will dive deep. In the first workshop you will carry out the whole process of making fish leather; the second workshop will focus on the specific ways of dyeing fish skin with vegetable dyes.

If need be, the workshops can be taken as separate courses and are suited for beginners as well as for those who have acquired some skill in tanning.

This two-day course allows you to be guided through the full process of tanning, from fresh skin to finished fish leather. Worldwide there are over thirty tanning materials, all of which you would be able to apply according to one of the five methods you will learn.

Besides salmon we will prepare the skins of other species, each with their own specific print and characteristics. We will apply plain traditional techniques and wholly natural tanning agents such as olive oil, egg, tree bark, salt, spices, fruit. Qualities like firmness and thickness you determine by the way of tanning; softness and pliability are reached by your skills working the skins. Clamping, glazing and finishing will have a lot of influence as well. Only the longest lasting tanning method you will have to finish at home.

Sustainable vegetable dyed fish leather makes an exclusive product. In this workshop you will work towards a well-organized pattern book. There will be pieces of fish leather - tanned in different ways - at your disposal, as well as one fresh salmon skin that you yourself will prepare for dying purposes. You will learn to dye without heating, using genista, cochenille, madder, iron and an organic indigo bath. We will compare cold mordant methods as to their effect on the colours and on the leather and make the acquaintance of materials that mordant, tan and dye at the same time. You will be challenged to create stronger colours, with due respect for the quality of the fish leather. Professional tests on lightfastness underpin the knowledge passed on in this workshop.

Adrine Pool, with her roots in West-Friesland in the Netherlands full with lakes and canals, is dedicated to tanning her own fishleather with only natural materials. After her study Andragology she started to work as a creative teacher, where she could live her passion for arts & crafts. Through several workshops in Sweden at Lotta Rahme she learned about the knowledge of the Inuit, the Saami and the Nort Canadian Indians in natural tanning. She combines this knowledge with tannins from the southern part of the world.

All workshops are being taught in Dutch and/or English. We will serve fresh coffee and homemade lunches, with healthy salades, farmers bread and several Dutch cheeses.
