The SHARK Alert
Chatham Elementary School Family Update
Sunday, December 3rd
Dear CES Families and Friends,
It seems hard to believe that we are already in the month of December. The school year is flying by and there are only 16 days of school this month before the December Vacation Break. The halls of CES are always full of laughter and joy, but there is something even more special about this time of year as we celebrate the many traditions and holidays of our community.
The PTO will be holding it's annual movie fundraiser on Saturday, December 9th. For $10 admission, students receive a snack and are able to enjoy the holiday classic, ELF, on the big screen at the Chatham Orpheum Theater. PTO volunteers and Key Club Members from the high school will be on hand to chaperone the students so you can have some time to run errands or grab a coffee and relax. Please see the flyer below for more details.
The Chatham Chamber of Commerce also invites all CES families to join them for the Light Parade with Santa on Friday, December 8th at 5:30 pm. The parade will leave from the Community Center and end at the triangle for the lighting of the town's tree. The tree is decorated by ornaments made by our own CES students (see below for more details).
On behalf of the entire staff, I would like to wish a Happy Hanukkah to all of our families who will be celebrating later this week. Wishing you a joyous season and a great week ahead!
Sincerely,
Dr. Kelly

Colder Weather
Please be sure that your child brings appropriate outerwear for weather conditions. In winter, this means a warm coat, boots, mittens or gloves, and a hat. Snow pants for snowy weather are recommended for all grades.
We also recommend labeling your child's coats, hats, and gloves. Our Lost & Found area fills up quickly and we are better able to return "lost" items to the correct student when they are labeled!
Gobble Up a Good Book
Congratulations to the students in Ms. Turco's 3rd-grade class for winning the November Academic Challenge - Gobble Up a Good Book. All of our students were challenged to meet their weekly reading goals for independent reading both in school and at home. 98% of Ms. Turco's class met their goals over the four week challenge. Ms. Turco's class has selected all-school spirit day for Friday, December 8th to be SPORTS DAY!
A very close runner up was Mrs. King's Kindergarten class with 97% of students meeting their independent reading goals for the month.
In fact, over the four week challenge 81% of our students met or exceeded their weekly independent reading goals. We are very proud of our SHARKS and their commitment to reading! Strong readers make strong students - keep up the great work SHARKS!

Students Recognize SHARK Staff
At this week's SHARK Assembly, several students came forward to nominate teachers to the Sea of Success. The students' kind words speak volumes about the kind and loving culture here at Chatham Elementary School. Below are the speeches our students wrote about their nominees:
Katherine V.
I want to nominate Mr. Gessner because from the first day of school he has been helping me in the all subjects. Even if he is busy with another student, Mr. Gessner tells me to hold on and always keeps his promise to help me when he is done. Although he gives a lot of instructions, he only does that so we know what to do with barely any questions to ask. Mr. Gessner is very helpful, respectful, accepting, and kind. He is a super SHARK!
Grace T.
I nominated Coach Wilder because they always help me and other students to understand the work that we have to do. Coach Wilder always comes to school with a smile and acts with kindness to everyone. Coach Wilder makes sure that all SHARKS are successful. Thank you Coach Wilder - I appreciate you!!
Sadie B.
I nominated Mr. Toppa because when I go to music class he always has a smile on his face and is always willing to help anyone who needs it. He makes his class so much fun and it is one of my favorites by far because he makes funny jokes. He is just naturally a very nice person. I think he should be recognized because he has been caught being an amazing shark so many times, whether he is helping a student or just talking in a conversation. I am so happy he is a SHARK.
SHARK SHOUT OUTS
- Thank you to Mr. Patrick McGovern for putting together all of our photos from the CBI Thanksgiving Luncheon! The video is now available on our school YouTube page and can also be accessed from the link in this newsletter.
- Thank you to Mr. Toppa for leading our percussionists in some lively holiday music for Wednesday's SHARK Assembly.
- Thank you to Ms. Middleton for helping our students create beautiful ornaments for our whole community to enjoy!
