5Essentials Survey
Have you ever checked the weather forecast before leaving home in the morning, glanced at your car’s fuel gauge before backing out of the driveway, or read the nutrition panel on your cereal box while eating breakfast?
"If you did any of these things, you collected data – data to help you prepare for your day, make good decisions for your health, and avoid costly delays," said Carmen Ayala, Illinois State Superintendent, in her January 18 weekly message. "Those are the same types of benefits school administrators can receive through our annual school climate survey, the data collection known as the 5Essentials."
Every year, District 2 administers the Illinois 5Essentials Survey to stakeholders across the District to collect data to help it improve teaching and learning by improving the culture and climate in its schools and classrooms.
The 5Essentials survey window opened Tuesday, January 24, and responses from students, teachers, and parents will be collected through Friday, March 31. Students in Grades 4-8 will take the survey during class, while parents and teachers are invited to click the link below to complete the survey.

Online Video of January 17 "See Through the Smoke" Vaping Parent Presentation

The presentation is available to watch online through February 15. Click here to watch the District's "See Through the Smoke" Parent Education Night. (Password: BlackHawk)
Robert Hackenson Jr., a youth motivational speaker from Dynamic Influence, "edutained" parents and students about teen vaping and tobacco when he visited Blackhawk Middle School last week. Mr. Hackenson shared his highly interactive presentation with parents on January 17, and presented it to sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students during in-school assemblies on January 17 and 18.
Mr. Hackenson's presentations feature "mind magic and illusions," and focused on the risks and misperceptions around vaping and tobacco use. They touched upon the commonly known dangers, then dived deeper into much less known medical studies and other eye-opening information to provide students with facts they need to make well-educated decisions about the dangers of vaping.

School Closing Information
eLearning Days
District 2 now calls eLearning Days when schools must close due to extreme weather. An eLearning Day counts as a regular school day and does not require the District to use a built-in emergency day at the end of the school year.
Students in Grades K-8 will be sent home with their Chromebooks when weather forecasts suggest school closures are a possibility. Attendance will be taken during eLearning Days and the hours of the school day will be the same. Instead of traveling to school, though, students will join their classes through their teachers’ virtual links, which will be posted on the District website and sent to parents via email and text message. Please refer to the District's eLearning Day Parent FAQ resource to learn more.
All students participated in an e-learning practice day with their class on November 30th in order to become familiar with the e-learning schedule and digital links.
