Webster Weekly
September 22, 2023
WEbster Nation,
Quick reminder that this is a 3-DAY WEEKEND. No school on Monday.
As you know, we lost a member of the SMMUSD family this week. Dr. Jacqueline Mora dedicated her adult life to helping kids. In my book, that automatically makes you a pretty special person. Her passing at such a young age gives us a lot to think about. There are no guarantees that the sun will rise tomorrow. So how do we approach today? With every interaction, there is an opportunity for impact. We have the choice each day to leave people feeling heard, respected, inspired, and valued. What we leave in our wake matters to those who are left to navigate. Jackie cared deeply about kids and worked tirelessly toward creating pathways for their success. I hope her passing is a reminder for us all to spread a little kindness and spark a little joy...both for ourselves and those around us.
Have a peaceful weekend,
With gratitude,
- Tedd

PETTY CASH
Every now and then, you have a random encounter with members of the Webster community outside of school. Last weekend, I found myself with friends and family at an event in DTLA. Much to my surprise and delight, the headlining band was none other than "Petty Cash," featuring beloved Whale-Dad, Phil Buckman. Good stuff, my friend.

Mrs. Berman & Mrs. Murdock's Kindergarten
We love STEAM and cooking activities so we incorporated them into our weekly phonics lesson. We continued our focus on short vowel a and after reading the book, "I Saw an Ant on the Railroad Track," by Joshua Prince, students engineered a tool to rescue the ant off the railroad track safely. To celebrate our successful ant rescue, we got creative and made yummy celery and cream cheese railroad tracks topped with cranberry ants. For letter S, Sam the Spider came to visit the class and left supplies for us to make marshmallow spiders using pretzels and chocolate chips. They were delicious!

Mindfulness in the Park
The students enjoy using their carpet dots in the park for yoga. This week, we learned what we can do when we are worried, anxious, or scared after reading, "Wemberly Worried," by Kevin Henkes. Among other things, we can breathe, practice mindfulness, hug mom or dad, hug our stuffies, and do yoga to help us calm down.
Mrs. Harris's 1st & 2nd Grade
Our first trip to the STEAM lab! Kids enjoyed exploring all of the different materials and working with flexible groups. There was collaboration and teamwork and adaptability and imagination, and most of all, fun!
Ms. Lockwood's 2nd Grade
Room 2 students are finishing their story highlighting the mindset Taking Action! They brainstormed problems that could take place at home, school and in our community then created solutions showing how they could take action.
Mrs. Stark's 3rd Grade
Room 8 continued our unit on force by investigating the question, "What Makes Bridges so Strong?" We learned about real-life bridge design and used our learning and knowledge of forces to build a strong bridge that supported as many snap cubes as possible -- using only paper.
Mr. K's 3rd & 4th Grade
Students practiced addition, subtraction, and budgeting while working on the Vacation Adventure Project. Students bonded and created during a "working" lunch. Oh, and we had a little Friyay Conga!
Mrs. Morris's 4th Grade
A highlight of the week is when it’s our turn to help serve lunch to the school! Giving up part of a recess so that we can help out is just one way that we are making Webster an awesome place to be. —Otto, Maisy, and Leith
Ms. Johnson's 5th Grade
This week was amazing!! We had our first states and capitals quiz, and we learned about cultures and how different cultures use a variety of natural resources. We also learned about decimals in "decimal bootcamp". Finally, HAPPY BIRTHDAY MRS. ISAURA!!
Room 20’s question of the week: What are you doing over the weekend?
“ I’m going to the beach this weekend!” - Leo Semradek
“ I’m going to my theater class this weekend, which I’m so excited about.” - Dax White
“This weekend I am going to win my soccer game!!” Piper Bolan
Room 20’s Star Author This Month: Grace Goodloe
Mrs. London's 5th Grade
This week we celebrated our summer birthdays, launched our Mindful Moment time, and had fun playing some games to practice place value concepts and new words we learned that come from Greek and Latin roots!
READY FOR LaUNCH
A huge thank you to the parents who have volunteered to monitor Poet's Park on Fridays for the launch of our Lunch Clubs campaign. This has opened the door for us to move forward. This week, I sent home a flier explaining the process for proposing a Lunch Club. In addition, we have notified the students and helped them to understand some important details about the opportunity. Keep in mind, the proposal process is extremely valuable. Identifying the audience (Tedd/me) and figuring out how best to convince me that your club will be a worthwhile endeavor is a task filled with creativity, thoughtfulness, and reflection. Clubs must be open and inclusive of all students who show an interest in participating. There are great lessons to be learned here. I look forward to some really fabulous presentations from interested students next week. Off we go!
Webster students spent their summer observing, hiking, mailing, dancing, taxonomizing, baking, and so much more-ing their ways through the PTA's summer engagement program, "Brainfreeze-->Superbloom." Today, we celebrated their work by distributing prizes to all participants. An extra big congratulations to Sophia Abeyta, Anderson Eggers, Theory Sokoloff, Opal Sokoloff, Kiran Roy, and Fredi Fink for completing the challenge & earning a special patch to flaunt on their Webster gear. Among them, Fredi Fink was randomly selected the grand prize winner & took home a 3D doodle pen for her work (featured in a previous Webster Weekly).
A huge thank you to Rachael Sokoloff for efforts to get this program up and running.

Run Malibu Kids Race
Run Malibu welcomes kids ages 4-10 to celebrate, inspire and support the next generation through the sport of running. This year, we are thrilled to announce the launch of a new kid's event: The Boys and Girls Club of Malibu Mile (The BGCM Mile). Kids' events take place Saturday afternoon at the Malibu Beach Expo at Zuma Beach. Entry fees are $30 per race or $45 for both. All racers receive a bib, kids swag bag, entry to the new "Run Malibu x BGCM Kids' Festival", a finisher medal, and as an added bonus, all profits from the BGCM Mile go back to BGCM. These events are perfect for all kids - from those new to running to those looking to run their best mile yet!
Parents can get in on the fun for the Malibu Half & 5K, too. Use the discount code “webster23” for 10% off of the Run Malibu 5km distance. Stay tuned for a parent challenge from Principal Tedd!
Changing Education Paradigms
Ken Robinson's TED Talk on the need for change in education is the most viewed TED Talk in its history. He makes quite a case for the need to rethink our approach in public schools. If you have not already seen this, it is ABSOLUTELY worth your time.

Developing strong character and valuable mindsets is essential. This remains a major focus at Webster. As we build community here on campus, at home, and across Malibu, we will continue to model the kind of behavior that promotes unity, kindness, and thoughtful problem solving. In addition, we will value these traits in others and recognize outstanding efforts.
Every Friday we sport our Webster Wear to show school spirit and celebrate the coming weekend. Classes with the highest percentage of Webster Wear win the whale for the week. Be sure to show your spirit and pick up some Webster Wear in the main office when you stop in to say hello.
