Masks Required on Buses and Inside Schools
State officials have given school districts the responsibility to determine COVID-19 mitigation strategies at the local level this school year. The 2021-22 COVID-19 Operational Plan for Families, Students and Visitors to Schools that was unanimously approved by our School Board on August 26 requires all students, staff and visitors in all District 196 buildings to wear a face mask indoors when the local transmission level is “substantial” or “high” as measured by the CDC transmission matrix. Currently, the transmission level in Dakota County is high, meaning face masks will be required in our schools to start the year, just as they are required to enter a growing number of businesses, government buildings and on all public transportation and airline flights.
Your partnership is critical to the success of our students. We expect students, staff and visitors to comply with the mask requirement, as outlined in Administrative Regulation 708.7, COVID-19 Masks, until the COVID-19 spread in Dakota County drops to the “moderate” level of transmission. Masks help reduce spread and give us the best opportunity to provide consistent in-person education all year. Just like last year, students will have opportunities for mask breaks during the day, such as at lunch or while outside. If parents and guardians are concerned about their child’s ability to safely wear a mask, they should refer back to Administrative Regulation 708.7 COVID-19 Masks.
Our district is committed to doing all we can to ensure students can continue learning in person this school year. This includes HEPA filters in all learning spaces, social distancing, recommending COVID-19 vaccinations for those who are eligible to receive them and requiring masks when the local transmission level is substantial or high.
Review and Update Emergency Information
If you haven’t already done so, please update your family’s information on record with the district by completing the online review in your Infinite Campus Parent portal account. This is the one time each year the district asks parents to complete the review to ensure schools have up-to-date contact information, emergency contacts, student health records and more. It is important for schools to have current information in order to be notified in case of emergency, changes in the school schedule and to receive regular communication from the schools and district.
All District 196 parents and guardians are encouraged to have an Infinite Campus Parent account of their own to stay involved in their child’s education, and to access end-of-term report cards, transcripts, attendance and other important information. Parents who do not have their own Infinite Campus Parent account can request an activation key from the office at their child’s school. For information on setting up an Infinite Campus Parent account and completing the online review, visit the Family Resources page on our district website.
We look forward to partnering with you to make 2021-22 a safe, fun and productive school year for all of our students and families.

SPORTS SCOREBOARD
VARSITY SPORTS
Varsity Boys Hockey - Lightning vs. Shakopee, February 19
The Apple Valley Sports Arena came alive Saturday afternoon as the Lightning closed out the regular season with a 2-1 Senior Day victory against Shakopee. The victory lifted their season record to 15-10 as Seniors Walker Bergland, Ryan Moline, Ben Keefer, Sam Gillis, Connor Christian, and Captains Cody Domagalski, Jordan Larkee and Gabe Tritschler were recognized along with their parents.
The Lightning opened on their toes putting the first three shots on goal during a very fast period that went five minutes before the first whistle. The Lightning’s early barrage included a near miss by Bergland before a Shakopee surge during the middle of the period. The Lightning responded as Zach Wooten rang one off of the post before the first Eastview penalty ushered in what would become a very long afternoon for the home team penalty killers. The Lightning had a 9-4 shot lead for the period.
The Lightning opened the second by killing a carryover penalty and pressuring the Sabers before two more penalties were called just a minute and a half apart. Goalie Jay Svaren and the Lightning penalty killers were strong as the Shakopee power play was eliminated, including a five on three. The Lightning were finally awarded a power play six minutes into the period and although failing to score began to take control before Jordan Larkee opened the scoring at 10:49. Larkee managed to get free on a partial breakaway before beating the Saber net-minder on a nice feed from Wooten with an assist also going to Gillis. Eastview had another power play abbreviated by two more penalties that resulted in a four on three, followed by a 90 second five on three. Led by Svaren and the defensive corps of Tritschler, Keefer, Karam and Opgrand, and forwards Larkee, Bergland, Domagalski, Tanner Kronberg, and Tyler Cords, the Lightning penalty kill was awesome but would be tested again.
Eastview opened the period again on the penalty kill but was up to the task before drawing two penalties against the Sabers. The Lightning did not score on the ensuing power plays but took control of the game putting nine shots on goal in the first six minutes of the period. Domagalski’s hard work put an exclamation point on that sequence in netting the eventual game winner on a rebound at the goal mouth at 5:57. The lone assist went to Brayden Kaldenbach on a nice shot from the point. The Lightning penalty killers was again put to the test when four penalties were called in less than a two minute span, culminating in another extended five on three. Once again, the penalty kill was awesome but the Sabers would finally score a power play goal off the rush when an Eastview player was clearly tripped at the blue line. Despite being on the kill nearly half of the period, the Lightning outshot Shakopee 18-10.
The 2-1 victory was an awesome day for the Seniors and entire team led by the amazing effort from net-minder Svaren and the Lightning penalty killers. For the afternoon, the Lightning limited the Sabers to 1 goal on 11 attempts, including more than four minutes of five on three. The Lightning played hard and dominated at five on five, but will want to improve their power play that was scoreless on four attempts heading into sections.
The Lightning take on Eagan tonight in the Section 3 quarterfinals at the AVSA. Let's GO Lightning! Calling all Superfans!!
Varsity Boys Hockey - Lightning vs. Lakeville South, February 17
Eastview Varsity Hockey faced off against top 10-ranked Lakeville South on Thursday night losing a tight game in overtime 2-1. Eastview game out strong in the first period trading opportunities with the Cougars. The Lightning got on the scoreboard first on a great goal by Gabe Tritschler in the 1st period, skating the puck up the ice and squeezing by a defender along the boards just inside the blue line and shooting from the top of the circle to put Eastview up 1-0. Neither team was able to score in the 2nd period thanks primarily to Lightning goaltender Jay Svaren who stopped all 18 shots he faced that period.
In the 3rd period, Lakeville South put on a lot of pressure to try and get the tying goal. Svaren stood strong and stopped several point blank chances. Finally, with about 6 minutes remaining, South scored on a tipped shot in front of the net to tie the game at 1. Neither team was able to score before the end of regulation, and the Lightning entered their first overtime game of the season. Eastview had a few good shots on the South goal early in the overtime, but South was able to net the winner just over two minutes into the OT. Overall- Svaren stopped 52 of the 54 shots he faced!
Wrestling Team Sections
The varsity wrestling team competed in the Section 2AAA Team Tournament on Friday. Eastview, the #3 seed defeated Rosemount 51-23 and advanced to the semi-finals before losing to #2 seed Apple Valley 25-46. The wrestlers earned 10 wins against Rosemount. Earning pins were Nolan Enderlein, Cole Frost, Ezra Formaneck, Luke Habeck and Alex Baccoli. Also earning wins were Aiden Enderlein, Levi Ruyle, Pierce Lewis, Ethan Dupont, and Jack Stevens. The Lightning earned five wins against Apple Valley including Brady Kelley, Ezra Formaneck, Luke Habeck, Alex Baccoli and Jack Stevens.
Girls Section 1-4 Individual Wrestling Tournament

Riley becomes Eastview’s first girls Section 1-4 Champion and State Qualifier in Eastview History. Freshman Elsie Olson earned section runner-up honors at 185lbs earning a win by fall in the semi-finals. Elsie becomes Eastview’s second girls State Qualifier in Eastview History.
JV SPORTS
2/19/22 - Eastview Boys JV Hockey battles the Sabers from Shakopee in a Saturday matinee
The Lightning started fast in the first period, taking a quick lead in shots. Unfortunately, a turnover in their own ended resulted in the first goal of the game by the Sabers, on just their 2nd shot of the game, at 6:05. A well-placed unassisted goal from the left circle beat Lightning goalie Blake Jensen #29 to the low blocker side making the score 1-0 for Shakopee. Eastview tied the game up at 12:05 on a nice goal by Caleb Nelson #20 with a lone assist to Sean Kalthoff #34. The first period ended 1-1 with Eastview leading in shots 12-5.
The second period was evenly played with shots ending up 10 to 7 in favor of Eastview. The Lightning were short-handed for 6 minutes of the period, however, as opposed to just 2 minutes for the Sabers. The only goal of the period was scored by the Lightning’s Louis Rogers #28 at 6:40, with an assist to Mike Cherevatsky #8, making the score 2-1. Despite the penalties during the period, Roger’s goal was a pretty even strength tally to put the Lightning in front. The shots for the game at the end of the second period were 22-12 in favor of Eastview.
The third period is where Lightning goalie Blake Jensen #29 started to shine, stopping all 17 shots by the Sabers in route to his 7th regular season win of the year. The Lightning were outshot for the period 17-8 by the Sabers, but Jensen stood tall in the net for the Lightning to seal the victory and end the year on a high note. Final shots for the game were 30-29 in favor of Eastview, with Lightning goalie Blake Jensen #29 stopping the final 27 shots of the game after giving up that first period goal on just the Sabers 2nd shot of the game. Eastview JV Boys Hockey ends the regular season with a 14-9-2 record, and a 16-9-3 record overall.

HIGH SCHOOL RUGBY
Rugby registration is open for our Girls and Boys high school teams.
Our Varsity Boys are looking to defend their State Championship, and are ranked 31st in the Nation in pre-season rankings. Our Varsity Girls program is up and coming, and we expect to challenge at the top in Minnesota this year in building up to our 2023 Scotland Tour.
WE NEED PLAYERS. No experience is necessary. We have many holes to fill and first-year players will get significant playing/starting time. In rugby, everybody plays, everybody carries the ball, and everybody tackles. Rugby suits all body shapes and sizes, and teaches explosiveness, decision-making, and agility. Rugby is the only spring sport that teaches safe and highly effective tackling to improve HS football player performance and to help avoid injury. We are an ISD 196 club sport, meaning Varsity players may earn their letter.
Practice begins on March 6th and the season runs through the end of the school year. More information, including registration links, may be found at https://www.eaasports.org/rugby.
