Welcome
Each week UMS will share out Tales from the Nest, a newsletter designed to keep UMS parents informed. Our aim is to send it out on Fridays to limit Find Out Firsts that are not emergency in nature and keep them all organized in a Newsletter each week. The newsletters will also be archived on the UMS website under the News tab. We hope you enjoy our new format.

FCPS Learning @ Home Days
A find out first was sent out on Thursday 1/18 detailing the plan for Learning @ Home days. We have copied it below for your information as well.
FCPS has received approval from MSDE for use of up to three Asynchronous Virtual Instructional Days, a.k.a. Learning @ Home days, in lieu of closure during inclement weather. Once approved, this option may be utilized in the future based on multiple factors. As part of the plan, the first "snow day" will always be a traditional closure. Approval and planning in advance for Learning @ Home days makes it an option at our disposal, but not a guarantee that they will be used.
los Días de Apprendizaje en Casa
As a result, our school has been engaged in planning and preparation for this possibility, to ensure full readiness if a virtual instruction day were to be implemented. Here's what you need to know and how you can help your child prepare:
- Instructional Activities: All assignments will be independent and self-paced (asynchronous). You can expect approximately 20-30 minutes per subject area that students can complete at a time that works for them or the household. Assignments and activities will be review and practice, not new content. Please note that the design of these instructional days does not require students to follow a typical school or "live" virtual schedule.
- All assignments will be posted in Schoology. Print options will be available if requested in advance by the student or parent/guardian.
- Assignments will include instructional activities aligned to the curriculum. These assignments will be review and practice. No new content will be introduced.
- Attendance: Students will be counted as "present" by logging into Schoology on the virtual learning day and turning in the assignments upon returning to school. As always, as unforeseen events arise (ex. Power outage), accommodations will be made upon return to school.
- Support: During a Learning @ Home Day, our staff will be available to provide "live" support to students during the day via Google Meet, in an Office Hours format. This is optional for students and not required.

In addition, students needing support can also send an email or Schoology message to their teacher , or call our front office at 240-566-9200.
Please note that in the event of a virtual instructional day, FCPS will provide communication and notice well in advance of any predicted inclement weather to ensure that schools, students, and families are aware of this possibility and are fully prepared. Again, this communication is to assist in planning and preparation for this possibility that may be utilized in the future based on a multitude of factors. I will keep you fully informed as we move forward in planning.
Congratulations!
