Wrapping up with Media & Innovation....
Kindergarten:
As the year came to a close we read summer themed books, one of which was Enemy Pie. The students made their very own friendship pies. I shared with them my family ingredients for Enemy Pie: oreo cookie crust, chocolate pudding, smashed oreos, and gummy worms. They said they wanted to taste it and I let them know I'd share with you. Possibly a fun summer activity to make at home. We also had our first in-person Author Visit in a long while, Valerie Bolling. She shared two of her books with us, Let's Dance! and Together We Ride . We wrapped the year up talking about our summer reading goals and sharing topics and characters we love to read about. Check out the GPS Summer Reading lists and discuss what books your child wants to read.
First Grade:
We are so fortunate to have had our first in-person Author Visit in a long while, Valerie Bolling. She came in early this month and shared two of her books with us, Let's Dance! and Together We Ride . Every first grader also wraps up the year with a visit to the public library, Perrot. They meet the librarians and learn about the Children's section and receive a library card. To support their learning, I join the classes on their field trips and back at school we set summer reading goals together. Check out the GPS Summer Reading lists and discuss what books your child wants to read.
Second Grade:
We learned a lot this Spring! In the classrooms, teachers taught students about Land and Water. I supported student learning reading about natural disasters that impact land and water. Students participated in activities, designing cities and towns to help prevent flooding and earthquakes. They built boats to escape a flood and we tested them to see if they could float in water. They all successfully engineered their boats! As our final activity to round out the year, students did several engineering challenges, and one created some uncomfortable struggle - creating slides and tracks. I remind them to FAIL because it's the First Attempt In Learning. I hope they continue to participate in innovation challenges over the summer, perhaps building things outside or even reading forts on a rainy day to do their summer reading. We also had our first in-person Author Visit in a long while, Valerie Bolling. She shared two of her books with us in early June, Let's Dance! and Together We Ride . I hope meeting the author and hearing her books inspired them to think about more books they want to read. Check out the GPS Summer Reading lists and discuss what books your child wants to read.
Grades 3-5:
The students had a visit from the new Perrot Librarian, Jen Minehardt who presented some great titles for summer reading (see the list below). It was great to have her here in person and share the love of reading and books with the students. Their eagerness to read some of the titles she shared was exciting! I've also visited with current 4th graders (soon-to-be 5th graders) to present the Battle of the Books or BOB Competition. To learn more about BOB and to review the GPS and Perrot Library summer reading information, please visit the links shared below. Thank you. And last but not least...
HAPPY (almost) GRADUATION TO 5TH GRADE!
