BOOSTER CLUB: You can still sign up a be a part of our booster club! See the flyer below for more information. All money raised stays here and goes towards ALL students, not just athletes. The Booster Club supports many activities throughout the year. We are raising money to purchase new track uniforms and new bench seating for the new gym. Our District does not fund these items. We must raise the money ourselves to support our students and athletes. ANY help is appreciated.
We would really love to see more students in the stands for Home games! We would love to cultivate a huge cheering section for our cheerleaders and players. Check out the Fan Cloth link below. Buy some new gear and show some school spirit as you come out to support our athletes!
JMS Book Fair will be November 7-9, 2023 in the Media Center!
This will take place during school hours, as well as during Parent/Teacher Conferences.
Media Center
Greetings from the JMS media center- the best place at JMS!! We had a busy but wonderful October here in the media center. We had all students visit the media center this month in their English classes. We discussed banned books, the importance of reading and focusing on our reading as well as checking out books. Students checked their accounts and received candy for taking care of their accounts. Our display of banned books led to some wonderful discussions. We had displays of scary books this month as well as our annual fall candy count. Students were able to make one guess each of the 3 days of this fun. The winner got all of the candy.
We continue to have students before school here in the media center. Students are welcome to hang out with their friends, check-out books, work on our media center puzzle and play our many games during this time. We are a loud and fun place. We should definitely be experienced by students who aren't going to breakfast.
Book Recommendation
Stuntboy, In The Meantime by Jason Reynolds illustrations by Raul the Third
Portico Reeves’s superpower is making sure all the other superheroes—like his parents and two best friends—stay super. And safe. Super safe. And he does this all in secret. No one in his civilian life knows he’s actually…Stuntboy!
But his regular Portico identity is pretty cool, too. He lives in the biggest house on the block, maybe in the whole city, which basically makes it a castle. His mom calls where they live an apartment building. But a building with fifty doors just in the hallways is definitely a castle. And behind those fifty doors live a bunch of different people who Stuntboy saves all the time. In fact, he’s the only reason the cat, New Name Every Day, has nine lives.
All this is swell except for Portico’s other secret, his not-so-super secret. His parents are fighting all the time. They’re trying to hide it by repeatedly telling Portico to go check on a neighbor “in the meantime.” But Portico knows “meantime” means his parents are heading into the Mean Time which means they’re about to get into it, and well, Portico’s superhero responsibility is to save them, too—as soon as he figures out how.
Only, all these secrets give Portico the worry wiggles, the frets, which his mom calls anxiety. Plus, like all superheroes, Portico has an arch-nemesis who is determined to prove that there is nothing super about Portico at all.
iPads
iPads should be coming to school daily, and they should be fully charged. The iPads should have your student's face or name on their lockscreen. There should be a sticker with their name on the back of the iPad case. The iPad case should be on the iPad at all times. If your student's school iPad does not have cellular data on it, they should come to the media center for assistance with this matter.
Book Club
Cyclone book club met October 19 in the media center. We all discussed what we were reading and gave a bit of info about our books. It was a great discussion with a lot of great ideas for our next read. We enjoyed time with old and new attendees. Some of us then read and others enjoyed some time with friends. Our next meeting will take place in the media center on November 30 at 2:50. Please have your student see Mrs. Kiley in the media center if you have questions. We are a fun group who enjoy reading. Please encourage your readers to "check us out!"
Builders Club
Builders Club is an affiliate of the Kiwanis organization. We are a service organization. We do acts of service for JMS and the community. At our first meeting on October 12, we were able to discuss some things we would like to do to improve JMS. We also removed expired posters from the walls of JMS so as to make our walls look better. We will have our next next meeting on November 16. We will be doing another service here at JMS. If your student is interested in serving JMS, please have them join us for our November meeting. See Mrs. Kiley in the media center with questions.
