A message from the office
Character Traits
We are back, and rolling into this school year. Students have learned the building wide and classroom expectations. This year, we will be tying a list of Character Traits into our school wide PBIS model. The month of August we focused on Respect, and will move into Responsibility in September.
We have been tying "respect" into morning meetings, announcements and other opportunities throughout the day. We will recognize students in multiple ways throughout the year, and hope our students can take these Character Traits home and share all they are learning with you and within their community.
Important Info
Pick up Patrol
Violet Elementary is moving to wards using Pick up Patrol for our dismissal
PickUp Patrol is an online platform that manages dismissal time more efficiently and safely. Parents conveniently submit plan changes for their children using the free app. The school efficiently tracks absence, early dismissals and end-of-day plans. The system also helps speed up dismissal time and adds a layer of security for your children. If you would like to learn more go to www.pickuppatrol.net.
We will send you a registration email with instructions to sign up. Registration links are active for 24 hours and can only be used once.We will give you notice when to expect the link.
Counsellor Corner
Each week the H.O.P.E. Packs Program offers a weekend bag of food for children who meet one of the following requirements: a) if your child has received a H.O.P.E. Pack in the past, (b) has been eligible for free or reduced lunch, or (c) your household income is low.
The food is intended to be kid-friendly, easy to prepare, and supply supplemental food over the weekend. The bags are not to be opened until your child gets home.
To sign up for this free program, contact Mrs. Lowe, School Counselor. She can be reached either by phone: (614)548-1531 (direct number) or by email: Lisa_Lowe@plsd.us

The Scoop from the School Psychologist
What is the biggest threat to our children’s happiness?
We are! Parents’ nonstop goal to make their children happy is a threat to their well-being in the long term. There is hope. Try these strategies for raising a healthy and happy child that can cope with anything that comes their way.
All Emotions are ok! It is healthy and normal for children to feel all emotions. In presuming that kids are supposed to be happy all the time, we sometimes deprive them of opportunities to learn to cope with the full range of emotions in healthy ways. Children feel strong emotions and difficult stressors just like adults do and that is ok. Instead of making kids feel like they should be happy all the time, we should focus on helping them recognize and cope with all the different feelings they may experience.
Shielding children from risk or tough emotions takes away their opportunity to learn how to deal with these emotions. It’s hard to watch your child hurting, and the instinct to make their pain go away is strong. We don’t want them to fail, but children learn so much through failure and gain a sense of accomplishment and self-worth when they are able to pick themselves up and succeed. That sense of accomplishment is so important.
Daily Conversations! One way to stay aware of your child’s emotional experience is through daily conversations. Checking in with your child allows you to help them recognize their feelings and find ways to cope with them. A healthy parent-child relationship is an important “protective factor” that acts as a buffer to life’s stress. You don’t have to solve their problems, you just have to be there to listen.
Gratitude! Another path to happiness is to help kids tune in to all the good in their lives. When you have those daily check-ins with your child, take a moment to mention the things that you yourself are grateful for. We can get stuck wanting our situation to be different or better and our children see that. When parents practice their own gratitude, it helps our children to also appreciate what they have and how amazing they are.
You Matter! One way to help kids feel that they matter in your family is to give them chores. If family dinner is an important ritual, then the person who sets the table has an important role. A sense of mattering helps well-adjusted kids stay mentally healthy and experience happiness. Being depended on to help your family makes you feel like you matter.
