Highland Park Senior High Headliner
November 10, 2023
Message from Principal Dr. Winston Tucker
Highland Families,
Now that the second quarter has officially started, I am asking you to reflect on how your child did academically during the first quarter grading period. If your student was successful, I encourage you to recognize the success. Even though high school students do not always show that they want us involved in their lives, both personally and regarding school, having raised a high school daughter and worked at the high school level for many years I can assure you they want our recognition and support. If your child did not do well during the first quarter, please make a plan for your child to succeed academically in the second quarter. Counselors are a great resource if you need assistance as a parent. Thank you so much for partnering with us in your child's education.
Dr. Winston Tucker, Principal

Class of 2024 All-Night Informational Meeting
Hello Junior and Senior Families!
Graduation will be here before you know it! Let's talk All-Night Party!
My name is Sarah Norby and Jen Harvey and I are co-chairing this year's All-Night Party. Jen and I both have seniors this year and were both part of last year's party planning as well. We are reaching out to all junior and senior families to discuss the All-Night Party that will take place following graduation on the 4th of June. This event is already being planned as many things have to be secured well in advance. We would like to invite you to an information meeting on Tuesday, November 14, 2023. The meeting will be in the library starting at 6:30. The All-Night Party is planned and run completely by parents. While it happens in the school and we do have an administrator present, no other school staff are there. This party only happens with parent support. Please come to the meeting and find out how you can be involved in making sure our kids have a fun and safe send off from high school. All families are welcome! Junior parents are needed as well! This is a fun event to plan, and the kids LOVE it.
We look forward to seeing you on the 14th!
Personal Project (10th Graders!)
Our 10th grade students are starting their IB MYP Personal Projects! Students have met with their IB MYP Personal Project Advisors. Here are some key aspects of the Personal Project:
• It is a student-centered and student-selected project and provides an opportunity for students to undertake an independent exploration into an area of personal interest -- to produce a truly personal and/or creative piece of work.
• The personal nature of the project is important; the project should be based around a topic that motivates and interests the student.
• Students are involved in the process of inquiry, action and reflection.
• Students are encouraged to demonstrate and strengthen their Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills such as Communication, Social (collaboration), Self-management (organization and reflection), Thinking (creatively and critically), and Research.
• Finished projects include: a process journal, product/outcome, paper, and a showcase.
• The overall project (with journal and paper) should take about 25 hours to complete. The criteria for the project and paper are Planning, Applying Skills, and Reflecting -- these are very universal and will work with any topic.
• It is an expectation that all HPSH students engage in this project as do all IB MYP students across the globe!
Please encourage your student to keep thinking about project ideas, continue journaling, and start on the project. There are materials available to help with brainstorming, journaling, and planning in the Personal Project Course on Schoology. If your student is not yet sure of topics, encourage them to talk to friends and family- maybe pursue topics such as exercise, relaxation, art, mental health, culture, construction, service to others, etc. There are lots of topic ideas listed in the materials on Schoology as well. This should be a fun, meaningful, and interesting project!
Thanks!
Marissa Bonk
IB MYP Coordinator

FFA News
From October 30th to November 4th, six Highland Park FFA members traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana for the 96th National FFA Convention. There were over 70,000 FFA members, advisors, and guests in attendance at the convention. One of our members, Valeria Orozco, competed in the inaugural National FFA Spanish Creed Contest. Additionally, Valeria and Lillian Thuente presented their Speak Ag Showcase video which they created as a part of their AFNR Communications class. While our Highland Park FFA representatives were at the National Convention, they visited the college and career expo where they were able to make connections with various agriculture businesses and colleges. They also attended multiple sessions where motivational speakers presented and various awards were presented to FFA members from all over the nation. Finally, they visited the Indianapolis Zoo, Fair Oaks Dairy Farm, and a rodeo!

Teacher Wish List
As the school year begins, there are two ways to support our terrific Highland Park teachers and staff:
- By purchasing items on the Wish List for use in the classroom: Wish List This list is always being updated—teachers are in the process of adding their lists for this school year.
- By purchasing general school supplies—Kleenex, hand sanitizer, pencils, pens, highlighters, dry erase markers, post-its and snacks. General supplies can be brought to the school office any time.
The PTSA will also be collecting Kleenex, hand sanitizer and general school supplies at the Open House event—if you can bring even one box of Kleenex, it will have a positive impact! It is the number one requested item from teachers and staff!
Thank you from the Highland Park PTSA.
