They were recognized with certificates and flowers at the May 2 Board Meeting for their service to our District and Students.
Inspirus funding opportunity: let's show them some gratitude!
Because it is so late in the year, we realize that many of the projects funded by Inspirus will be for next school year. However, as a part of this Inspirus funding program, we'd like to tie-in the Character Strong trait of the month for May-June which is GRATITUDE.
We are asking teachers whose $500 grants are funded to find a way (this school year) to involve students in thanking Inspirus for their generosity.
In addition to this $12,500 commitment to the Bremerton School District, Inspirus has donated nearly $15,000 this school year to the Bremerton School District. This program brings their donation to teachers in our District for this school year to more than $27,000!
Student letters, photos and art will be displayed on the "Community Wall" at the new Bremerton Inspirus branch on Auto Center Way throughout the summer. This is a great opportunity to showcase student work, and highlight our District's SEL focus.
There are no "rules" for this request. It could be be as simple as thank you notes from students to Inspirus, or perhaps a single thank you card signed by your students. Or maybe it is a photo of students holding a "thank you" sign... or a brief student essays on gratitude. Or maybe you want to get creative and do a class video or create a class poster. Again - no rules for this request. We just want kids to be involved in thanking Inspirus, and to reinforce the importance of gratitude.

Board Briefs: May 2, 2019
Compiled by Ioanna Cossack, Board Secretary
Policy News: The Board adopted revised Policy 6000, Program Planning, Budget Preparation, Adoption and Implementation. The one change was to adjust the Board reserve (unreserved Ending Fund Balance) from 3% to 5%. This bring us more in line with other districts across the State. A new policy, 6610 Video Surveillance, was approved for first read and will come back to the Board at the May 16th meeting for adoption.
Board Recognition: The Board passed three resolutions proclaiming: 1) May 3rd as School Lunch Hero Day, 2) May 8th as School Nurses Day, and 3) May 6-10 as Teacher Appreciation Week in the Bremerton School District.
Our Directors love to have a full house and recognize our students and staff. Thursday evening, the Board was provided a demonstration by the BHS FIRST Robotics Team of the climbing robot they built and took to competition. View Ridge also shared some highlights from their recent Disney’s Lion King Kids performance. Kristen Morga took time to thank the many Renaissance High School partners, and we heard from three BHS students who shared their stories and described their participation in the Rotary Youth Leadership (RYLA) program as “beyond exceptional.” Lynn Romero helped to recognize our School Nurses, as School Nurse Appreciation Day approaches. Lastly, as we honor our Teachers during the week of May 6-10, the Board honored six teachers who recently achieved or renewed their National Board Certification, and provided a certificate of appreciation to the Bremerton Education Association on behalf of all its members.
The Consent Agenda passed and included the AVID students’ visits to universities in May, new Kitsap Mental Health contracts, a School Data Solutions contract, and a resolution to surplus almost 20,000 old library books. This will clear a lot of space as staff continue to develop a contemporary collection that reflects our community and provides student with current and up-to-date information to meet their interests.
We heard from the City of Bremerton and their consultant in regard to work and design plans for the Safe Walking Project around Kitsap Lake Elementary School.
Another project is the plan by the new owners of the Frances Haddon Morgan Center and DSHS buildings to build 132 apartments next door to the Administration Building. This means the District will lose a good portion of the field behind our building. A public meeting has been organized for May 9th, 6pm, at the Bremerton United Methodist Church.
Dr. Leavell shared that along with Chehalis and Spokane school district, we were accepted into a Pilot Math Program through the University of Washington and will receive funding for three years. This interactive partnership will focus on improving math scores.
The Board approved another year of membership with the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) and Director Dave Rubie will continue in his role as Board Representative to the W.I.A.A.
The Board approved Resolution 2018/2019-23 Educational Program and Reduction in Force. There was elimination of a .3 CTE position at the high school as well as reductions at West Sound Technical Skills Center due to enrollment. Affected classes/positions may be reinstated if enrollment increases.
The 2019/20 Cooperative Services Agreement with the OESD-114 was approved. This contract bundles the many services that we purchase from the ESD.

BSD honors Abundant Life Foursquare Church for service to students
Last month, the Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA) Region 114 held its annual regional awards dinner.
Community Leadership Awards were presented by each district superintendent to individuals or groups in their community who have devoted their time and talents to support our schools. Their efforts have had a significant impact on education in our region and have not gone unnoticed.
This year, we honored Abundant Life Foursquare Church for their tremendous ongoing support of the Bremerton School District and Naval Ave Early Learning Center. The church started the annual Back-to-School Fair years ago. The District now manages the event, but Abundant Life collects, organizes and distributes all of the school supplies that are given away --- more than 800 bags annually! The church puts on the annual Harvest Carnival at Naval Avenue Early Learning Center, and has done a number of labor-intensive clean-up and maintenance projects at Naval Avenue Elementary.
Healthy Youth Survey Results: Mental Health
About one in four Kitsap high school students report having considered suicide and one in 10 report having attempted suicide. These rates are higher among youth who identify as girls (compared with boys) and those who identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual (compared with straight).
