Dear Bridgeport Families,

Less than one week until summer! It has been a great year with our bulldogs! Thank you to all of the fifth grade families that came to last night’s program. What a lovely evening! I am thrilled at the academic and social emotional progress our students have made this year! Math and reading scores have shown huge growth thanks to all the extra effort of our students, families and teachers. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: There’s nothing more important than daily reading this summer. At least 20 minutes of reading goes a long, long way! Make a plan to do this with your student everyday this summer.

There are a few staff changes coming for the next year that I would like to share with you, if you haven’t already heard through the grapevine. Bethany George, PE teacher, is expecting another daughter and will not be returning next year. Maria Reed will be teaching PE in the gym and Brenda Alarcon will be teaching PLUSS (PE Learning Using Small Spaces!) Jessie Jansen, school counselor and psychologist, has taken a psychologist position in the Newberg School District. Her position will be filled by Alex Horwitz, an experienced school counselor moving to the area from Southern Oregon. Additionally, Natalia Petrevics will be moving to Charles F. Tigard School next year and we will welcome Claudia Palacios, currently student teaching here at Bridgeport, into that Learning Specialist position. We will also say goodbye to some of our TWI teachers next year. Naivit Velazquez, Gabby Hernandez and Juan Lopez will not be returning. Violeta Rook has accepted a position much closer to home in Silverton, Jorge Porrata will be moving to Lake Oswego Language Academy, and Mariana Peña-Alfaro will be teaching fourth grade in Oregon City. We will welcome back Nora Wahlund to second grade TWI and are thrilled to announce that Evelin Gutierrez, currently teaching second grade TWI, will be moving to kindergarten TWI. We have also hired an experienced TWI teacher Sandra Miller to teach fourth grade TWI and another experienced TWI teacher from Metzger, Rosa Haro, to teach fifth grade TWI. Additionally we are excited to welcome Jackie Arroyo and Laura Valdovinos to TWI positions as well. Finally, as you know, Associate Principal Bobbie Brown has accepted the principal position at Tualatin Elementary. We are in the process of looking for someone to fill that position and will make an announcement when that process is finished.

I am already looking forward to another excellent year at Bridgeport next year. Enjoy some rest, relaxation, and reading this summer!

As we move into the late Spring, finalized summer school budget information from the state has been slow in coming and it has been a waiting game as the ways and means committee contemplated providing dollars to districts for summer school programming. At this late stage in the Spring, we have come to understand that there will not be summer school dollars available to districts this year from the state.

Based on this information, we have now solidified what summer programming TTSD will be able to provide using limited federal funding and Measure 98 dollars for secondary programming. See the Q&A below for more detailed information.

Q: Will TTSD be able to offer summer school program?

A: Yes. On a limited and very targeted basis.

Q: Will programming look the same as it has the last two years with a K-8 Enrichment offering?

A: No. There will not be a K-8 Enrichment summer school this year. This year, funding for summer school has not been released and therefore, the summer school offerings will be targeted using federal dollars and Measure 98 funds that are specifically earmarked to support extended learning.

Q: With the federal and M98 funds available, what summer school programming will be offered?

A: We were able to pull together funds from these buckets to provide incoming Kindergarten support, middle school transition support for incoming 6th graders, high school credit recovery and on-track support programming and an Early School Years experience supporting students who have IEPs.

If you are considering volunteering in a classroom or for an activity/field trip for NEXT school year, PLEASE consider getting your background check done now. It's so sad when parents are chosen and we in the office have to notify them that they are not eligible to participate yet.

Go to Volunteering with TTSD and start the process. This has to be done online. Your background check is valid for 3 years and can follow your student to their next TTSD school.

We love our four-legged friends, but please do not bring them on school grounds while students are present as stated in school board policy KGB. The excitement of dismissal can make even the friendliest of dogs nervous and more likely to snap.

The Tualatin Girls Hoop Camp is dedicated to creating a positive basketball experience for your daughter while at the same time focusing on basketball skill development. Players will be exposed to drills that will help them develop their games and gain self confidence. This camp will focus on individual skills such as ball handling, shooting and footwork. We will also have team contests, games and awards.

The Tualatin Library is piloting an intercambio program that is every Wednesday between 4:30-6pm. The program is an informal and loose way for people to practice their English with native speakers and other at their own level. It is not structured like a class with lessons but more of a space where you can have conversation and meet new people.

La biblioteca de Tualatin esta pilotando un programa de intercambio que es cada miercoles entre 4:30-6pm. El programa es una manera informal y suelta para que la gente practique su inglés con hablantes nativos y otros a su propio nivel.
