Barry Elementary 2023-2024 Family Newsletter
September 8, 2023
Wow what a week! We accomplished so much this week here at Barry! Students continue to demonstrate our school wide expectations! We are so proud of our students as they learn these new procedures and model them for their peers. We are also excited about what we are seeing in classrooms as we pop in and out of classrooms. We appreciate your support as parents/guardians. Please know your partnership is extremely important to the success of all students! It's a great time to be a Barry Pirate!
Students should have received their Major Saver packet this week. Thursday or Friday this week, they watched a kick off video with their class that spoke about dos and don'ts of the Major Saver program. Thank you in advance for any participation toward this cause!
Reed Portrait Group was here today as students and staff smiled away for their fall portrait. Stay tuned for more information regarding retakes and when to expect portraits.
Have a wonderful weekend and remember there is no school Monday, September 11 for a Professional Learning Day. We will see you back on Tuesday!
Happenings Around Barry
Some of our students went on a fun scavenger hunt around the building to learn the layout of our school! Mrs. Ambrose got to play at indoor recess with our 4th grade students and Coach Mash went all out in support of our Chiefs! It was a fun week!

Platte County Education Foundation Fundraiser, September 6-19
This week, we kicked off our Platte County Education Foundation discount card sales program. Our schools, in conjunction with Major Saver, work with businesses throughout our District to offer a $15 discount card providing customers with 18 local buy-one-get-one-free or discount offers. In most cases, redeeming only two offers offsets the cost of the card. Proceeds from the card campaign directly benefit your student's school and the Platte County Education Foundation. The Foundation gives back to the Platte County R-3 community by awarding annual pre-K through 12th-grade classroom and building site grants, as well as senior scholarships. Your student should have brought home an envelope with information and instructions this week, and was instructed to not go "door-to-door," but to offer to relatives, friends, co-workers, etc. Collection dates start on Tuesday, September 12, and the program wraps up on Tuesday, September 19. Please consider purchasing a card and supporting our schools! You can also purchase cards online here.
PCR-3 Community Advisory: Apply by September 25
Platte County School District recognizes the importance of community input to help set the future direction of our schools. We will be kicking off another year of the PCR-3 Community Advisory by gathering volunteers who will have an ongoing role to review the Districtβs progress toward its Comprehensive Strategic Improvement Plan goals, as well as to provide input regarding the District's general operation and specific issues impacting education activities and programs. Any District resident, employee, or student may participate in the ongoing work of this group.
We have reached out to existing members about continuing their participation and are now opening membership up to new members. If interested in serving on this advisory, please complete the application linked here by September 25. The first General Membership meeting will be held October 3.

Meet Ms. McCoy
Hello! My name is Katie McCoy and I am a practicum student at the University of Missouri. I will graduate from Mizzou in May of 2024 with a Master of Education in Educational, School and Counseling Psychology. This fall, I will be working as Avery Holsingerβs substitute counselor while she is gone on maternity leave. A little about me: I graduated from Platte County High School in 2015 and earned my undergraduate degree from Kansas State University in 2019. I love spending time with my family and friends, especially my 5 month old niece. I enjoy reading and anything outdoors. I am excited to be here at Barry Elementary this semester and work with all of the students and staff! #BeBarry

Treasure Chest
The Treasure Chest is our school district resource center. It is a stocked pantry providing food, clothing, toiletries, and other household supplies. All items in the Treasure Chest are free to PCR-3 students and families who participate in the Free or Reduced School Lunch Program. The Treasure Chest is open for shopping every week of the calendar year on Wednesday evenings from 4pm-6pm.
Families must register by calling 816.858.7001 weekly so we can appropriately plan for resources. Once approved, families can drive through at the original Treasure Chest site (in the north parking lot of PCHS). Identification must be provided in order to receive food.

Barry School Store πͺ (to be named by students)
Please visit our Barry School Store website!
We are so excited to be opening a school store this fall to promote school spirit and pride at Barry Elementary. We will sell items such as pencils, erasers, pencil grips, notebooks, etc. The possibilities for inventory are endless. The store will eventually be run by student employees who will calculate purchases, make change, count and record inventory, and complete checks and balances of inventory and sales. Additionally, older students will be afforded leadership opportunities by teaching and mentoring younger students. All proceeds from the store will directly benefit the students and the school. We are excited for our students to gain valuable real-world experience in the areas of teamwork, responsibility, leadership, and customer service as they learn lifelong skills!
If you have any questions, want to volunteer or make a donation, please contact Blaire Zessin or Teddi Weber.
Professional Learning Days (PLD)
On Monday, September 11, school will not be in session for our first Professional Learning Community (PLC) day of the 2023-24 school year. **NOTE - we have moved from early release PLC days to full PLC days starting with the 2023-24 school year.
PLC days are designed to establish sustained and uninterrupted time for teachers to work together and collaborate to improve student learning and achievement. This time allows educators to examine and respond to the four basic fundamental questions of a Professional Learning Community:
- What is it we want students to learn?
- How will we know when each student has achieved the learning?
- How will we respond when a student is not learning?
- How will we respond when we know a child has mastered the learning?
For more information on PCR-3's Professional Learning Community, visit the PLC page on the district's website.
Coming-In the Building
Visiting the building: you will always need to bring your ID with you when you come into the building. We will scan your ID into our safety system Platte County uses to ensure the safety and security of our students. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding as we work to keep all students safe!
