Thanks to the families that have already signed up. Let's support our teachers and get that fridge filled! Thanks to parents Carrie Evans, Lynn Kaufhold, and Heather Garrett for their support of teachers during the month of September!
Work-Based Learning
Are you a senior with a job? Want to earn elective credits?
Apply for work-based learning! The final application deadline for the 23-24 school year is due by November 15 and is available here. Note: the application will only work for @corbett.k12.or.us email addresses.
Course Description: Seniors can earn (up to) 2 elective credits by participating in an internship or job that has meaningful applications to their future. An application is required. While this program is not competitive, requirements must be met to participate, including passing grades and 95% attendance in current classes, presentation to the school board during trimester 2, and adequate progress towards graduation (must be on track to graduate). The application has 5 components: program requirements acknowledgement & agreement, written response to questions, transcript verification, parent approval (completed separately by parent(s)/guardians(s)), internship/employment partner (completed separately by supervisor). Applications are due a week prior to the beginning of school. Trimester 2 and 3 applications are due November 15. Juniors may be able to participate in limited circumstances.
Julie Trisel, HS Science Teacher
Q: What was your favorite subject in school?
A: Science! :) I had a great teacher in high school who made it the first class I took that was really hands on, exploratory, and so much fun!
Q: What was your first paying job?
A: A sushi restaurant called "I Love Sushi"
Q: What's the best concern you've been to?
A: Weezer, in 1999!
Q: What’s the best place you've traveled to?
A: Oregon beaches are my absolute favorite places to go to! Especially Newport and Lincoln City.
Q: What's your favorite season?
A: I love the fall when you can start seeing the changes in the color of the leaves.
From Chemistry to Kinder
Mrs. Trisel takes science from the lab to the river with high schoolers and K/1
On the K/1 field trip this week, Mrs. Trisel stationed herself at a section of the river and conducted various water experiments with kindergarten and first grade students to check the health of the river. A high school science teacher working with K/1 "...is the kind of thing that only happens in Corbett," said Corbett High School Principal Kathy Childress. A leader among Oregon science teachers as the treasurer of the Oregon Science Teachers Association, Mrs. Trisel is also working with middle school students at Corbett Middle School and CAPS to participate in Science Fair in the spring.
Corbett Turns Pink!
Last week, Cardinals across the district raised awareness for breast cancer by wearing pink to home sporting events throughout the week and to school on Thursday, 10/5. The anchor event of the week was Pink Out at Tuesday's home volleyball match. This marked the 20th consecutive year Corbett's volleyball program has hosted Pink Night. According to Coach Angela Davis, "It was the best Pink Night to date. It was great seeing the community come together for a great cause. Our student section is like no other!"
Corbett was celebrated in the Gresham Outlook for AP course access and success. Read the article here.
Corbett Goes To Manufacturing Day
Celebrated nationally on the first Friday in October, MFG Day is manufacturing’s biggest annual opportunity to inspire the next generation, positively shift perceptions about our industry, and build the foundation for the manufacturing workforce of the future.
MFG Day is an initiative of the Manufacturing Institute. The MI builds, diversifies and strengthens the modern manufacturing workforce, with the goal of furthering individual opportunity, community prosperity and a more competitive manufacturing industry. The MI engages underrepresented communities and shifts perceptions about careers in modern manufacturing, leads skilled training and career development programs, provides thought leadership and research on the changing state of the workforce and builds partnerships to scale up its impact on manufacturing in the United States. Corbett sent a group of students to Microchip in Gresham.
All students in grades 9-12 are invited to the Homecoming dance after the football game on October 20. The theme is "Monster Mash." Costumes encouraged! Costumes must follow all school rules (including no weapons). Masks that cover half of the face (or less) are permitted; full face masks are not allowed. Questions about homecoming? Contact the student leadership advisor, Ms. Ducey jducey@corbett.k12.or.us
Cross Country
Cross Country raced in the Paul Mariman Invitational in Philomath on Saturday, 10/7. Jesse Gomez and Enrique Aguiluz set Personal Records. Cyrus Kurkinen and Bryce Plummer set Season Records. Despite the heat, almost everyone who ran this same race last year did better than they did before. "I was impressed with the perseverance our runners displayed running on a day that got significantly warmer than we expected. Well done, runners," congratulated Coach Rondema.
Damian Simonds, last week’s recipient of the Corbett Baton, passed the baton to Zevi Gross. Damian mentioned Zevi’s enthusiasm and joy and how Zevi puts in maximum effort every practice and every day.
- Next races: Wed. 10/11, Estacada Invitational, Sat. 10/17, Babson Invitational at Barlow HS

Football
Varsity played at home on Friday against Vernonia/Jewell, winning 34-16. Zane Davis celebrated his 17th birthday with an outstanding game, chronicled in The Gresham Outlook article, "Corbett football’s Zane Davis runs over Vernonia with 5 TDs in win." The team had a strong performance by the varsity Offensive Line that plowed the way for Zane to find his way into the end zone multiple times. Mac Garrett and Armin Mehanovic both had strong performances on offense as well. On defense, Armin, Hunter Hergert, Gunner Fullerton and Korbin Heuker provided key plays and stops when needed. Gunner had a great night on special teams as well both punting and filling in at kicker.
