Villa Park High School recognized for student success in Advanced Placement while broadening access.

Orange, California -- College Board announced that California, Orange Unified School District, Villa Park High School has been named to the Advanced Placement Program (AP) School Honor Roll, earning BRONZE distinction.

The AP School Honor Roll recognizes schools whose AP programs are delivering results for students while broadening access. Schools can earn this recognition annually based on criteria that reflects a commitment to increasing college-going culture, providing opportunities for students to earn college credit, and maximizing college readiness.

Villa Park High School had 43% of seniors who took at least one AP exam during high school, 31% of seniors scoring a three or higher on at least one AP exam, and 18% of seniors who took five or more AP exams!

The VPHS AP Program:

• 30 Courses offered
• 60 Sections taught
• 24 Different teachers teaching AP sections

Principal Dennis McCuistion says, "The Villa Park High School Bronz Honor Roll AP program is a shining example of our commitment to academic achievement and the pursuit of excellence. It equips our students with the skills, knowledge, and confidence they need to excel in higher education and beyond. We are proud to have such a robust and dynamic AP program within our school, and we look forward to seeing the continued success of our students as they embark on their educational journeys."

Villa Park High School would like to recognize the following students for being named Scholars with Distinction. This achievement is earned through student performance on California Standardized Testing (SBAC), which takes place during the Spring semester. These 124 students, representing the top 25% of seniors, were able to score "Proficient or Advanced" in both English/Language Arts AND Mathematics. For graduation, these seniors will be given a special cord to distinguish themselves as VPHS Scholars of Distinction. Congratulations to all of you!

Struggling in math? Come to Villa Park’s Math Support Program every double and zero period! Math Support with Mrs. Childers and Mrs. Petrella is held in rooms 206 and 213. Students will have the opportunity to work one on one with both teachers on a variety of mathematical subjects, including: normal, honors, and Advanced Placement levels of math. Initiated last year, math support has made tremendous strides in improving students' grades across the board. Mrs. Childers, our AP Statistics teacher is well-experienced in the tutoring fields and currently teaches at California State University, Fullerton.

The Villa Park Marching Spartans competed in the 58th Annual Placentia Heritage Festival Parade this weekend! Band earned 1st place in their division and 9th out of 24 bands. Color Guard placed 3rd. Well done, Spartans!

This Thursday, teachers and staff alike had the opportunity to play Mario Kart against students. The principal, Mr. McCuiston; the math teacher, Mrs. Childers; and the German teacher, Mrs. Anderson, faced off against three other students to enter the preliminary matches. Villa Park’s Mario Kart competition is in conjunction with our ESports program, led by Mr. Larrios in the R buildings.

Last Tuesday during lunch, the Octoberfeast, commonly known as “Club Rush” was held. Many clubs, including Interact, Key Club, and Table Tennis Club, sold burgers, boba, and the like. Unlike previous years, monetary exchange transitioned to a ticket system, where students purchased tickets prior to or during the festival rather than using cash. The Octoberfeast was a successful event, raising thousands of dollars for our student organizations.

Homecoming King Carter Christie is connected to campus through football, track and field, and ASB. He is the captain of the very successful football team this year and was a captain of the track and field team last year. He is also the commissioner of boys athletics on ASB. His favorite memory at Villa Park was last year’s homecoming game and dance. The Spartans defeated Canyon in a very close game that went down to the last quarter. The next day, Carter and his friends all went to the homecoming dance. This was a memory that he will never forget. After high school, Carter plans on attending a 4-year university, although he has not decided which school is his dream school yet. He plans on studying engineering in college and hopefully getting a great engineering job in the future while staying connected with his family and friends. One word that Carter would describe himself with is diligent. Carter would like to start off by thanking his family because they have always supported him and loved him unconditionally. He also wants to thank his friends for always making him laugh and providing him with unforgettable memories. Lastly, he wants to give a huge thanks to all of you who have voted for him to be on court! He wouldn’t be here without any of your support! Give it up for Carter!

Homecoming Queen Giselle Diaz, is connected to the campus through the dance program. She has danced at Villa Park for all four years of high school, and is also this year’s varsity dance captain. Giselle’s favorite memory at VPHS is being a part of the dance team, she has made so many new friendships and has been able to dance with the people she loves. After graduating high school, Giselle’s plans to go to college and become a pediatric nurse, in hopes to pursue her love for helping little kids. One word to describe Giselle would be sassy! Giselle would like to thank her mom, dad, and her boyfriend Isaac for always being there for her and supporting all her decisions throughout high school. She is so extremely grateful for all of them!

Please help Villa Park High School's award-winning vocal music program reach their fundraising goal! We are responsible for raising funds for our annual operational costs which runs between $25,000-$30,000 per year. Donations help us offer a quality music program for all students. Your support will have a direct impact on student learning in the classroom and growing their individual skills.

Your donations will help us continue to pay for our staff accompanist, instrumentalists, sheet music, facilities rentals, transportation, critical sound needs, festivals, instructional materials, etc. It will also help contribute to our acoustic shells campaign as part of our PAC stage updates.

For 19 years, Mrs. Atwood has been a social sciences teacher here at Villa Park High School. Majoring in the social sciences at Biola University, Mrs. Atwood played D2 college softball, an avocation she continued from high school. Mrs. Atwood is a seasoned softball player, having gone to the CIF Championships three times while attending Calvary Chapel High School. In her free time, she enjoys coaching her daughter, Sady, in softball. As a history teacher, Mrs. Atwood currently teaches AP US History and AP Human Geography, with the former being offered to juniors and the latter to freshmen. Throughout her two-decade tenure, Mrs. Atwood’s favorite part of her job has been interacting with her students and educating them on real-life experiences. Mrs. Atwood’s favorite memory here at Villa Park would be "Dancing With the Teachers” in 2015, winning 3rd place and skateboarding across the stage. In addition, Mrs. Atwood is a mother to three kids: Austin, Elliot, and Sady. She’s a self-proclaimed sports mom, with the Los Angeles Angels being her favorite baseball team.

Chair of the Social Sciences Department, Mrs. Quiroz, has been a part of the Villa Park family for roughly 23 years. As a social studies teacher, Mrs. Quiroz currently teaches AP Government and AP Macroeconomics. She also teaches regular government and economic classes, albeit online. Graduating from California State University, Fullerton, Mrs. Quiroz majored in political science. During her college years, she often volunteered for a nearby law clinic and participated in Model United Nations conferences. Prior to her matriculation at CSU Fullerton, Mrs. Quiroz attended Kennedy High School in La Palma. She was active in the marching band and graduated in 1994. Villa Park High School was Mrs. Quiroz’s first teaching job; thus, Villa Park holds a special place in her heart. Mrs. Quiroz’s favorite part about her job is being with her students, educating them on the importance of our nation’s government. She also has a daughter here at Villa Park, our very own ASB Historian, Grace!

Our girls golf program kicked off the week with two games against Foothill High School and Brea Olinda High School. Varsity girls golf played twice on Monday against both Foothill High School, losing 245 to 258, and Brea Olinda High School, losing 220 to 287. Junior Varsity also played on Monday versus Brea Olinda High School, falling short, resulting in scores of 220 to 287.

Continuing on Monday, the Villa Park girls volleyball teams traveled to Canyon as they played their final week of seasonal games. Junior Varsity lost with a final score of 0 to 2. Our varsity team also lost by a score of 0 to 3. Ongoing to Wednesday's set of games, our volleyball program went against El Modena in our home gym. The junior varsity girls pushed for a win, scoring 2 to 1. The varsity girls played a phenomenal game, winning 3 to 0. This resulted in our varsity team moving into the playoffs for CIF. Congrats, varsity girls volleyball!

Our girls tennis program played against Foothill and Yorba Linda High Schools this week. On Tuesday, junior varsity tennis traveled to the former, yet lost with a final score of 0 to 18. Our varsity team went against Foothill as well, here at Villa Park, and fell short, losing 6 to 12. Not to mention, girls varsity tennis traveled to Yorba Linda High School, losing 6 to 12. Our junior varsity girls team went against Yorba Linda, losing 3 to 15. Our girls golf program kicked off the week with two games this week against Foothill High School as well as Brea Olinda High School. This week, boys football went against Foothill High School on Thursday and Friday. Our varsity team honored the seniors who have dedicated their time and hard work to the program with our senior night. The team played well, yet fell short with a final score of 22 to 21. Our junior varsity team will be traveling to Foothill as they play against them this Friday, fighting to continue their undefeated season. Also playing this Friday, our freshmen boys football team will be hosting Foothill High School here at Villa Park, also playing to keep their winning streak going through the season. On behalf of the school, good luck, Spartans!

Carrying on to our Villa Park boys water polo program. Both the Varsity and Junior Varsity teams traveled to El Modena High School and brought their Spartan spirit with them. Our varsity water polo team went on to win with final scores of 8 to 7, and junior varsity won 7 to 4. Good luck! Best wishes to the junior varsity boys water polo team, which has an upcoming tournament this Friday and Saturday hosted here at Villa Park.

Our varsity girls flag football program is hosting Orange Lutheran High School today. Good luck, Lady Spartans!

Villa Park is a public school, which means we offer a free public education. Any fees attached to events, such as field trips, are requested as a donation from families. Your child will not be excluded from the event if you are unable to donate for a school day field trip or program.
