MUSKRAT NEWSLETTER
November 2023
Greetings All!
When I asked the staff what character trait we should focus on as a school this month they chose GRATITUDE. It just makes sense... we have been working and learning together for a a couple months now. We are starting to know each other more and our school community is getting stronger every day. I am grateful for all of the staff who bring their passion, kindness, and humor to school every day. I'm grateful for the hard-working students - the reason why we are all here! I am grateful for all of you, Families - thank you for sharing your kids with us and for all your support of the teachers and helpers here at Muddy Creek.
What are you grateful for?

Canned Food Drive!!
We are gearing up to start our first food drive of the year! We are partnering with the South Corvallis Food Bank to donate food for the holiday season. Starting Monday November 13th we will begin collecting canned and boxed foods just inside the front doors. You can find a wish list and option to make a cash donation on their website.
We also have a need for food donations for students. It happens every once in a while, kiddos show up with no lunch. Since we don't yet have a school lunch program we don't really have any food to share with students when that happens. If you would like to donate shelf-stable, microwavable foods that kids like to eat we can keep them on the "rainy day" shelf for them.
Winter Concert Coming up!
Can we get a shout-out to Ms. Lina from the Music Department?? She joined Muddy Creek this year and has been doing an incredible job of getting our kids hooked on music. The kids always leave her classes humming and singing with smiles on their faces. She has scheduled an all-school Winter Sing-Along on December 6th @ 6pm so please save the date! There will be several opportunities to help us raise funds for the music program that night as well... more to come 🎶

A Message From ICP Treasurer, Karen Steele...
Why does MCCS keep asking for participation in fund-raisers and/or ask for donations? Here are THREE important things you should know...
1. The state gives every school money based on enrollment. As a charter school, MCCS receives 87.5% of the standard student allotment. Corvallis School District (CSD) keeps 12.5% for special education services and other “administrative costs.”
2. CSD has the ability to put a Local Option Levy on the ballot. In May 2022, the levy passed was worth $8.6 million. MCCS doesn’t get any of this funding, even though they advertised it was for all schools. You can see your contribution on your current tax statement.
3. In 2018, CSD passed a $200 million bond. This bond was to be used for building maintenance. Lincoln and Hoover were totally rebuilt. All other buildings were given significant upgrades. MCCS was not given any of these funds.
In summary, we pay all salaries, PERS, insurance, utilities, supplies as well as all buildings repair and upkeep costs on 87.5% of state dollars. Please consider making a donation to MCCS and/or participating in our fundraisers. We can do a lot more for our students with your financial help! https://www.muddycreekcharterschool.org/support-mccs/ If you have questions or ideas, please reach out : steelekands@aol.com
