Sunday Chat
Hello Hornet Nation!
Tomorrow, we have the privilege of celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a day dedicated to honoring the incredible contributions of Dr. King to the Civil Rights Movement. As we reflect on his legacy, it is important to acknowledge the pivotal role he played in the integration of our own Great Mills High School back in 1958.
Since then, our school has flourished and grown into a vibrant and diverse community, proudly representing the true spirit of St. Mary's County. Dr. King's teachings have resonated within our halls, reminding us of the significance of standing up for others and embracing the uniqueness of every individual. I am proud to say that these values are deeply ingrained in the fabric of Great Mills High School. On this special day, let us not only take the time to appreciate Dr. King's vision but also to extend our hands in friendship to those who may be different from us. In doing so, we continue to foster an inclusive and welcoming environment that defines our school.
As we approach the final weeks of the second quarter, I wanted to address two important matters that require your attention.
Firstly, I want to acknowledge the ongoing issues we have been experiencing in the school bathrooms. We understand the frustration this may cause for those of you who simply want to use the restroom and continue with your day. We want to bring an end to these incidents, but we need your help to do so.
If you witness or experience any inappropriate behavior in the bathrooms, I strongly encourage you to share this information with our administration. Your insights and observations are crucial in helping us address and prevent these situations from occurring. I want to assure you that your identity will remain anonymous, as your well-being and comfort are our top priorities. Together, we can reclaim our bathrooms and restore a safe and respectful environment for everyone.
Secondly, with the spring season fast approaching, now is the time to consider participating in a sport or extracurricular activity. Engaging in sports has been shown to have numerous benefits, including improved academic performance, enhanced stress management skills, and a more enjoyable school experience. Whether you are interested in Lacrosse, Outdoor Track and Field, Tennis, Baseball, Softball, or a corollary sport, your eligibility to participate will be determined by your 2nd quarter report card.
I urge you not to let your grades hinder your athletic aspirations. If you are passionate about joining a sports team, make sure to prioritize your academic responsibilities and maintain a strong academic standing. Remember, being part of a sports team doesn't always require being an athlete. Many teams also seek dedicated managers who assist coaches in various ways and even travel with the team. Managers play a crucial role in recording games, preparing water, ensuring equipment is in order, and sometimes even participating in drills or helping design practices.
If you are interested in participating in a spring sport or becoming a team manager, registration is currently open. Click here to visit our Athletics website to access more information and sign up.
Thank you for your attention and cooperation in these matters. Let's continue to work together to create a positive and inclusive environment at Great Mills High School.
Let's make this a GREAT week, Great Mills!

Play Fighting = Consequences
We would like to bring to your attention a recent issue that has been occurring within our school. There have been instances where students have been engaging in play fighting in the hallways. While some may view this as harmless horseplay, others are doing it intentionally to provoke a response from administrators.
We understand that play fighting may seem like a minor issue, but it has been causing disruptions in the school day, especially with the recent increase in fights over the past month. We have already addressed this matter with the students, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a safe and respectful environment.
However, we believe it is crucial to inform you as well, as parents play a vital role in reinforcing positive behavior and accountability. Moving forward, if any students are found engaging in play fighting in the hallways, we will address this with disciplinary consequences.
We greatly appreciate your support in helping us maintain a peaceful and conducive learning environment for all students. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
