Lake Agassiz Elementary School
October 2023
Message from Mrs. Jonasson
Our district and our school have a goal for 5% increase in student proficiency in Reading and Math. It is our goal as educators at Lake Agassiz for every student to be proficient in Reading and Math. While this is a lofty goal we are willing to commit our time, energy, and learning to make this happen for students. We appreciate the support you give to your child's learning and your child's part in his/her educational career.
Statistics consistently show that reading proficiency is the key to opening doors for students. Proficiency in reading sets the stage for learning in all curricular areas.
Make sure you have your conference scheduled, as a Title 1 School, we work for 100% participation from families for conferences. If you haven't scheduled your time yet, click this link to schedule your conferences with your child's classroom teacher, any specialist teachers, our literacy specialists, and any special education teachers as well.
Literacy Walk: With our concentrated focus on building literacy skills for all students, look around the building when you are here for conferences for a few powerful displays to help students learn literacy throughout the day and also see it's importance in many aspects of our world. See the images below that showcase a Literacy Walk that you can take when in the building in the coming week.
Word of the Week
In the hall to our library/gym/music classrooms, students walk by this board daily. Look at all the concepts students can stop and learn about with their teacher as they walk to specials!

RED Events are Back!!
Backpack Reading for Kindergarten is BACK!
Kindergarten Families,
We are starting up our Backpack Reading Program for the 2023-2024 school year! The goal of the program is to promote literacy at home. All kindergarten students will have the opportunity to take home Backpack Reading books. We invite you to read to your child every day - the goal is to share, talk and learn together!
Backpack reading books are housed in your student’s classroom and are different from library books. Students can exchange books as often as they would like. A selection of books was generously donated by The Little Red Reading Bus.
Tips:
Sit close to each other. Snuggle in for a good story.
Create a routine. (Before bed. After supper. On the couch.)
Use interesting voices for characters.
Talk about interesting parts and the pictures.
Take time to ask and answer questions.
Happy Reading!
