Orthographic Mapping Sight Word Strategy
Grade Levels: K-3
The orthographic mapping strategy is effective for teaching students to read and spell sight words. Sight words are frequently used words that students need to recognize quickly in text and spell correctly when writing. Orthographic mapping helps students connect the sounds they hear in a word to the letters that represent them. Often, sight words do not follow predictable, decodable patterns (of, was, they, etc.) and this makes them more difficult to read and spell. Using the orthographic mapping strategy, students are able to make these sound-letter connections and learn the words more successfully. Click here for instructions, templates and a video demonstrating this strategy.
Procedural Reminders
- Students can be dropped off between 8:45-8:55. Students should not arrive earlier than 8:45 to play on the playground.
- All morning drop-off needs to be done using the car line on 3rd street. If you are walking your child then you can use the back parking lot to park; however, we do have staff that begin at 8:45 and have a difficult time finding parking to get into the building. The back parking lot should not be used as a drop-off spot or line. Students should not be jumping out of the car to enter the playground from that direction.
