North Syracuse Central School District's Electronic News
Issue #87 | March 17, 2023
Hello North Syracuse Central School District Parents, Guardians, Teachers and Staff,
The background of this week's newsletter is one of the many wonderful pictures taken the Festival of Nations, which was recently held at Cicero-North Syracuse High School. The Festival was started several years ago by James Corl, a 2021 C-NS grad, when he was a student at North Syracuse Junior High School. His intent in creating the event was to celebrate and showcase the diversity and cultural richness that exists right here in the NSCSD. When James started the event in 2015, 12 countries were represented at the Festival. This year, more than 30 countries were celebrated through exhibits, music, dance, food and more. Hundreds of students, staff and and families participated in the event and it was truly heartwarming to be a part of such a unique cultural experience. I continue to be impressed by the wonderful mix of people that make up this great District and I am proud to be a part of it.
Thank you to everyone who made the event possible and especially those who shared a part of their culture! I also want to send a big "Thank you" to Kim Rice and all of the staff members and administrators who supported and facilitated the Festival of Nations. It was great to see the event return to such an amazing turnout!
Sincerely,
Daniel D. Bowles, Superintendent of Schools
Board of Education Approves 2023-24 Academic Calendar
On Monday, March 6, 2023 the North Syracuse Central School District Board of Education approved a 2023-24 academic calendar. Included with the calendar are provisions for school closings due to weather-related conditions or other emergency situations. The calendar and provisions have been posted on the District’s website.
Coaching for Excellence
Some North Syracuse Central School District instructional coaches had a unique opportunity this month when they partnered with NYSED coaches from across Central New York for a day of learning.
18 coaches took part in professional development and brainstorming sessions throughout the District. There was a ‘snowball’ strategizing segment where various problems were tossed into a pile, randomly retrieved, and addressed as a group. They also discussed how to handle different conversations as coaches.
“Tell Your Story” at the 2023 Festival of Nations
The North Syracuse Central School District took time this month to celebrate the unique backgrounds of students and staff. According to SchoolTool, there are 25 different primary languages represented in the district.
That diversity was celebrated at this year’s Festival of Nations, which was held in the C-NS High School cafeteria. The theme was “Tell Your Story.” Participants were able to learn about the countries, cultures, and customs that students hold dear.

Roxboro Road Middle School Students Featured in Art Exhibit
You can view the artistic talents of some Roxboro Road Middle School students at the Salina Library throughout the month of March.
The students along with their art teachers were invited to an art reception to kick off the exhibit. The public was able to speak with the students and ask questions about their art, creative process, and techniques.
If you would like to view the art yourself, Salina Library is open Monday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., or Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) Registration Continues
The North Syracuse Central School District's online Universal Pre-Kindergarten application system is still active. Once the system closes on March 31, all completed registrations will be placed into a lottery drawing and applicants will be chosen at random.
If the UPK program fills up before all names are pulled from the lottery, the remaining students will be placed on a waitlist and parents will be notified if a spot becomes available. Registrations will be accepted after March 31, but those students will not be included in the lottery.
