We hope that you had a restful Memorial Day weekend and were able to take time to honor the memory of the service members and their families who have sacrificed to protect the freedoms we enjoy.
Warmly,

SGA Upcoming Events...
SGA is still working on our service project with Mr. Smith. SGA is trying to collect 2,000 canned food items for the Howard County Food Bank. We have collected 523 items. Our last day to collect is Wednesday, May 31st. The food bank is in need of bags of rice, pasta and sauce, spices, soups, peanut butter, sauces and condiments, bags of beans, hot and cold cereal, 100% fruit juice, diapers (size 4+), and feminine hygiene. Let's restock the shelves for Howard County residents!
Counseling Corner
Mrs. Shields and Ms. Horvath, School Counselors, delivered school counseling lessons to each grade in the area of “Self-Management Skills” highlighting the essential curriculum objectives below.
Kindergarten
Identify words that describe a variety of feelings and discuss healthy ways of self-expression.
If You’re Angry and You Know It by Cecily Kaiser showcases the importance of understanding and managing feelings, actions, and reactions. Students will gain familiarity with recognition of emotions (especially big feelings) while learning about self-regulation, self-control, and coping skills.
1st grade
Develop words and strategies to manage feelings and understand positive/negative consequences of choices.
Students identified things that make them feel frustrated and ways to help them calm down. Students listened to The Very Frustrated Monster by Andi Green.
2nd grade
Develop an awareness of personal abilities, needs, interests, and motivations.
Second grade students learned the difference between put ups and put downs. Put ups are kind words that we say to one another and put downs are unkind words. This concept was demonstrated by crumbling a large red heart and showing how the put downs leave an imprint. Students then listened to Stephanie’s Ponytail by Robert Munsch, which highlights positive self-esteem.
3rd grade
Identify strategies to increase self-discipline and self-control.
Students will gain familiarity with recognizing emotions as being in four feeling zones and will identify healthy/helpful coping strategies for each zone. (Zones of Regulation)
4th grade
Demonstrate strategies to increase coping skills and the ability to assume responsibility.
Students demonstrated that they are able to identify a feeling they have experienced, rank that feeling’s intensity, and identify a constructive way of handling that feeling.
5th grade
Demonstrate ability to manage transitions and ability to adapt to changing situations and responsibilities.
Each 5th grade class had a middle school transition lesson. We discussed common fears about moving up to middle school and differences to elementary school. They were able to ask any questions about middle school so that they felt prepared. They also practiced opening combination locks.
Summer Curriculum Resources
The elementary curriculum offices have compiled several activities and strategies for students to enhance their learning during the summer. The resource can be found on the Canvas Parent Pages. linked below. Resources can be viewed by grade level and subject. Additional resources and suggestions can also be found on the Parent Pages. Reflecting on last week!
We had another wonderful week at FES! This past Thursday, we opened our doors for students to show off their work! Gifted & Talented Displays were in the gym along with student presentations, a Lego Challenge in the Media Center, Mall Art Panel in Mrs. Stroter's Room, Science Inquiry Projects in the cafeteria and numerous student projects, art work, etc. exhibited throughout the classroom. A huge shout out to Mrs. Ciliberti, Mrs. Cassara, and Mrs. Gainer-Lee for all of their hard work in planning and leading this night.
On Monday we are excited to honor Reservoir High School graduates and former FES alumni as they prepare for graduation. RHS gators will be walking the halls for our students and staff to clap them out followed by imparting advice and wisdom onto our 5th graders.
We look forward to welcoming our Jr. Falcons (rising kindergarteners to FES on Wednesday, May 24th. This will be a time for Jr. Falcons to visit kindergarten classrooms, tour FES and begin building relationships with peers.
On Thursday, May 25th- our 4th and 5th grade Chorus will be showing off everything they learned with our spring concert. And we conclude the week with Field Day!
