Update From The Art Room
Dear Johnson Community,
My name is Abby Khandelwal and I am excited to be teaching your children this year in art class. I have taught art to elementary school children for over ten years including in the Cambridge and the Sudbury public school districts. I am coming back to teaching after taking some time off to be home with my kids who are now in kindergarten and third grade.
I have had the chance to get to know the students a little better through the first two art projects. The 2/3 grade students worked on symmetrical butterflies and incorporated words that describe who they are (such as kind, athletic, silly, artistic, etc.) into their artwork. The 4th grade students started off the year by hearing the book The Day You Begin by Jacqueline Woodson and drawing imaginative self-portraits and incorporating words that describe who they are, similar to the 2/3 grade students. All classes are currently taking a break from these two projects so we can get the Square 1 Art fundraiser underway. If you’re not familiar with Square 1 Art here is more information: https://www.square1art.com/
Coming up next the 2/3 students will be working on a fall themed art project in which they will be drawing pumpkins that are made to look 3d. 4th grade students will also work on a fall project. They will print real autumn leaves on black paper using white paint. All lessons I teach connect to the Massachusetts state standards for visual arts. I also try to incorporate children’s books, connections to famous artists, and SEL into many of the lessons I teach.
My hope is that the Johnson students feel welcome, have a chance to discover how creative they can be and understand that making mistakes is part of the process in the art room this year. I look forward to working with and getting to know each of them throughout the school year.
THANK YOU to Johnson PTO and Community Sponsors!
Last Saturday, Johnson School hosted its annual Fall Fun Fair. It was a very rainy day but the PTO pulled it off perfectly. Everything was moved inside and placed perfectly so that all activities were still able to happen. There were so many current students, student alumni, and alumni parents in attendance and it was such a special and happy day. A huge thank you to Matt Brunell and Kasandra Branson for chairing the event and for the many volunteers who gave up their time to help out. We would also like to thank our community sponsors for helping us to make the day amazing.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Spirit Day Parade
On Tuesday, October 31st, we will host our annual Spirit Day Parade at 2:40 pm. The parade will start at the back of the school and walk to the front where each class will take a photo on the front steps. There will be no fake weapons allowed and if your child has a scary mask please have them stop by the office to make sure it is appropriate for the parade. If you would like to dismiss your child from the parade you MUST update pick up patrol.
Smart Watch Policy
Please read the current policy for cell phones and personal electronic devices (smart watches) below. Smart watches should be in backpacks during the day.
In Elementary and Middle Schools; 1. Cell phones and personal electronic devices must be turned off and not visible during the school day. Texting is prohibited. Contact with parents and guardians during the school day must take place through the office. Cell phones may be used after the school day ends. 2. Electronic devices necessary for a specific educational purpose and/or individual student need may be used in class with the approval of the supervising teacher/staff member.
DAILY REMINDERS:
Please send your students to school with a water bottle and a snack each day. We have bottle filling machines that students can use to refill as needed. Everyone has snack daily and should bring that in from home.
Remember also that you can update PickUp Patrol anytime. This is the way we reconcile attendance and run dismissal so please add any changes to your account in a timely manner.
