In June 2018, the state of Tennessee adopted the Tennessee Together initiative—a comprehensive state plan aimed at addressing the opioid crisis in Tennessee through expanded opioid prevention, treatment, and enforcement strategies. As part of this effort, TDMHSAS partnered with the Tennessee National Guard and community Substance Abuse Prevention Coalitions (SAPCs) across the state to recruit local school districts to participate in a survey of youth alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use. The purpose of the survey is to inform state and local prevention planning efforts and to serve as a tool for evaluating the impact of prevention strategies aimed at reducing opioid and other alcohol and drug misuse.

The Survey is completely anonymous and confidential and designed to protect your child’s privacy. Students will not put any identifying information on the survey. This survey is also completely voluntary, meaning that students can stop taking the survey at any time during administration and/or skip any question (s) that they do not wish to answer.

If you do not want your student to participate in this survey, please use the Opt Out form below or by using your mobile device to scan the QR code to the right. The responses to this survey will automatically generate an email to our Coordinated School Health Department.

Operation Restoration (O.R.) and back this year…ACT Prep Bootcamp!

ORHS Spring Intersession is March 13th through March 16th from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Lunch will be served at 11:00 for those who wish to purchase (Fee waiver/free lunch status applies). Bus transportation will be provided as needed. Students need to bring their laptops and their school supplies each day. Spring Intersession is self-paced, so once the missing assignments are completed, students are allowed to stop attending. They do not have to attend all four days if they complete their work before the week is up. Please check Skyward, look for emails generated from ICU, and/or contact your child's teacher if you have questions about their missing work or whether they need to attend intersession. For Spring Intersession, students are expected to complete missing assignments to improve their grades. Students who are failing a class or classes are strongly encouraged to attend.

In addition to Operation Restoration (O.R.), this year we are offering an ACT Prep Bootcamp, just in time for the free ACT for juniors on April 4th. Students will spend a day with each section of the ACT to practice test-taking strategies and review content. We strongly encourage our upperclassmen, especially juniors, to take advantage of this free opportunity to improve their ACT score.

AVID/Wildcat Scholars are sponsoring Compassion Week on March 6-10. This is a week that will allow our students to bring awareness to mental health issues as well as show compassion for fellow students.

Some most dedicated and talented students of German took additional evening and weekend German classes at the University of Tennessee Knoxville while still attending ORHS and received the prestigious DSD-1 Certificate (Deutsche Sprachdiplom). This Diploma is issued by the German Department of Education (Kultusministerkonferenz) and tested the participants at the B1-level. The B1-Level is the third level on the six-level scale of competence regulated by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and above the A2-Level tested in the common AP-Exams.

Students had to pass tests in all four modes (reading, writing, listening, and speaking). The following students passed these tests with flying colors at the B1-level in all four modes:

Registration Information

Current 9th – 11th grade students may now log in to their Skyward account and complete their course registration for next school year. Registration Information and instructions can be found on their Class of 202X Canvas Page.

All students will receive a registration sheet during their 1st block class no later than Thursday. The form can also be printed from their Canvas Page at any time. Students must complete this form and have a parent signature by the time they meet with a counselor next week in order to finalize their registration. The signed and completed form should be given to their counselor in the amphitheater on the student's scheduled registration day. Students will be called to the amphitheater by last name based on the schedule below. Periods will be split in half to accommodate the students (for example, 1a is the first half of 1st block and 1b is the second half of 1st block).

***Students are required to complete their course registration in Skyward prior to meeting with their counselor next week. The meetings are to verify that courses have been requested correctly and make any corrections if necessary.

The Branch’s Education Committee is sponsoring Black History Month Contest for Oak Ridge/Clinton Schools Middle (6-8) and High School (9-12) youths. Awards will be given to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. 1st place Winners $150, 2nd Place Winners $100, and 3rd Place Winners, $75. Winners will be from Oak Ridge Schools and Clinton Schools.

The Day is approaching and we are so excited to host the 2023 Military Academy Day. Please share with all students, parents, teachers, and any interested individuals.

ORHS Varsity Coed Cheer is looking for dedicated student-athletes that are ready and willing to take the program to the next level, both on the sidelines and on the competition stage. Current juniors who are interested in the Business Academy Work-Based Learning program as seniors during the 2023-2024 school year should get a recommendation from Mrs. Ledden, Mrs. Lloyd, or Dr. Hutson. What: A FREE grief camp that teaches children how to cope with the loss of a loved one through a variety of activities including equine therapy, games, music, etc.

Where: Mane Support in Roane County – transportation will be available.

Jada Guinn, former Lady Wildcat and a senior at Tennessee Tech, won the Conference Championship in the OVC Conference.

Tajian Jones, former Wildcat and 5th year senior at UNC Asheville, won the Conference Championship in the Big South Conference.

Both of these Wildcats had incredible seasons with their teams, and their grit and leadership in the final games of the tournament stepped up and were instrumental to their wins. Good luck to the Golden Eagles and Bulldogs!

Essentially, students seeking this diploma distinction are going to be given the option to do a combination of dual enrollment and work-based learning as follows:

• Graduation requirements must allow the student to earn at least one science credit and one math credit through approved course substitutions which include dual enrollment and work-based learning aligned to the student's career path. Students are also required to earn nine credits of dual enrollment or work-based learning experiences that apply the students’ knowledge and skills. (More information below and attached).

• They are required to work with an approved career counselor, who, in our case, can be a school counselor and/or if they are enrolled in Work-Based Learning, would be our WBL-trained and certified teachers (these are Teresa Ledden, Bev Sparks, Sonya Minarik, Jessica Pointer, Mark Buckner, and Eric Mason in my department). I am also WBL certified and would be happy to assist as needed, and am prepared to send additional instructors to WBL training as needed as we increase demand in our WBL courses.

• TDOE wants to ensure students are learning the career success skills, which ARE the WBL standards (simplified version attached) that are embedded in every single CTE course in grades 5-12, and are also the standards on which the 5-12 CCTE teachers have committed to as our essential standards in our longitudinal graded 5-12 CCTE PLC.

• These are also (no coincidence) the course standards we use for student self-reflection on our end-of-term CCTE survey in high school and end-of-grade band in middle school.

• These standards are explicitly taught in our Work-Based Learning courses under the teachers named above. The course includes the creation of a student work portfolio, which is also an expectation when earning this distinction.

Seniors!!! We’ve had lots of questions about scholarships – where to find them, how to apply, and what am I eligible for. Lucky for you the Counseling Office website gives you TONS of information answering those questions. Check out the scholarship page and try one of the scholarship search websites, like TSAC scholarships, or College-Scholarships.com – you’ll find numerous scholarships that might be the right one for you! We’ve recently added new links to scholarships for beauty school, pursuing a heavy-machinery themed program, even scholarships that have no GPA, testing or essay requirements – just a survey to complete. And of course, we have the East Tennessee Foundation Scholarships which are specifically for students in our part of the state. Starting next month, a free community educational series entitled “Roots of America” will be presented in Oak Ridge. It will focus on the achievements and challenges of various ethnic groups that have made our community and nation so strong. The series of talks is hosted by a partnership between the Oak Ridge Institute for Continued Learning (ORICL) and the Oak Ridge Breakfast Rotary Club (ORBRC). The partnership hopes that the free lecture series will foster unity among our community’s diverse groups of people. Here are the plans for the lecture series starting in February and concluding in May.

Parents, do your kids need assistance from their teachers?? Every teacher has provided a time when they will assist students. Please see the attached schedule. Students are responsible for informing the teacher when they will attend.

In order for a student to take their permit test, a form is required from the school. Mrs. Thacker, our attendance secretary, prepares these forms. Requests are accepted through the link below. When school is in session, a completed form may be picked up in the Attendance Office. However, if school is NOT in session, the form will be mailed home by USPS.

The Driving Center of Oak Ridge is offering drivers education classes for students who are trying to get a permit or license or that simply just need more experience. Available class dates are listed below. Each class is 8am-4pm and also includes 6 driving lessons.

The East Tennessee Foundation offers several scholarships that are available specifically to students in Oak Ridge and Anderson County. These are amazing opportunities that seniors should check out! The list of scholarships for ORHS students is posted outside the Counseling Office and on the Scholarships Website.

The Dream Scholarships are for highly motivated undocumented students who want nothing more than to get a college education but are unable to afford the cost.

Chick-Fil-A Scholarships – Every year, twelve (12) $25,000 scholarships will be awarded to students based on academic success, community service and financial need.

Seniors – be sure to check out the Counseling Offices’ Scholarship and Career Page! Students driving to school are required to have a parking tag. There is NO cost; however, they must register their vehicle with Student Services and show their driver's license. Forms can be found in Student Services at Mrs. Viruet's desk.

Students who need lockers can request one on the form below. Students should walk around the school to find a locker that is convenient for them. They should take down the locker number and know the hallway where it is located in order to complete the form. Once the form is completed, they can report to Mrs. Viruet in Student Services to retrieve their combination.

For the last couple of years, the federal government has provided free breakfast and lunch to all students regardless of financial status. Free meals comes to an end this year. It is critical families complete the form below. If you have qualified for free or reduced meals in the past, a form MUST be completed or charges will accrue in the cafeteria.

While families may not plan to take advantage of free school meals, many families will qualify for services far beyond meals such as reduced ACT and AP test costs. This information is strictly confidential and can be sent to Claire Kelly in the Main Office or directly to Dr. Larissa Henderson, Pupil Services.

Parents, students are NOT allowed to carry medications on their person at school. All medications must be registered with our nurse, Lori Gupton. Registration requirements are in the form below. This includes over the counter medications such as Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Benadryl or any type of allergy medications, etc. Students found with medication are subject to disciplinary action, which can include a Zero Tolerance and placement at alternative school. At the end of the school year, parents are responsible for picking up medications before the last day of school. The nurse will properly dispose of all medications remaining on the day of school.
