Destination Imagination Tournament Winners!
Massachusetts Destination Imagination Tournament announces winners. Millis DI had two teams compete at the tournament: One elementary level team and one high school level team. Both teams placed 2nd in their challenge! Amazing! They have the option to participate in Global Finals if they wish to further their experience at the next level. Regardless of their choice, we are proud of these teams and their dedication to DI. Below are the students that participated and the challenge they performed.
Tricky Tales Challenge
The Fine Arts Challenge helps students to develop acting and creative skills through artistic media, theater arts, scriptwriting, and prop design. This year teams had to tell a tale of a trickster overcoming a tricky situation. In addition, they had to design a costume that goes through a transformation and create an illusion that enhances the story.

Course Selection for 2022-23 School Year Begins
Millis High School Counselors, Riley Dunn and Megan McCarthy, met with students this week to explain the process of course selection for the 2022-23 school year and emailed the MHS Program of Studies 2022-2023 to every student. Students will be choosing their classes through the course registration area in PowerSchool. Teacher recommendations have been made and are posted in the course registration area of each individual student's PowerSchool account. The system is now open for students to enter their course selections.
The school counselors will be meeting with students individually during their English classes to ensure they are taking appropriate schedules and meeting graduation requirements. These meetings will occur with sophomores and juniors starting on April 1st and with freshmen starting on April 5th. The English teachers will be informing the students when their day for course selection meetings falls. Courses need to be selected in the PowerSchool system prior to that meeting. It is critical that you review your student's course selections with them and that they are completed on time for the meeting with the school counselor. The course selection system will be shut down for outside access when the scheduling period is over for each class.
If you have questions about the courses your son/daughter was recommended for, please have your son/daughter speak to their individual teacher or feel free to contact the teacher yourself. Each teacher makes course recommendations after a great deal of time and consideration with the best interests of the students at heart. If you have any further questions about the scheduling process, please do not hesitate to contact the School Counseling office at 508-376-7010. We look forward to working with you through the course selection process.

OWEN HILTON
SLA Executive Search
Vice President
MHS Class of 2013
Did you attend college?
I attended the University of New Hampshire and graduated with a dual degree in Marketing and Business Management from the Peter T. Paul College School of Business in 2017.
What is your profession?
I am an executive recruiter also known as a corporate headhunter. I work for a startup executive search firm that is dedicated to the investment banking and financial services industry. Based in NYC, my day to day revolves around networking with professionals in the investment banking world and connecting them with clients who are hiring. The job is fast paced and dynamic - you are privileged with the exposure to very successful and smart individuals and learn a lot about businesses and the economy. Simply put, we are brokers with a specific focus on finance professionals and connecting them to businesses to help them grow.
What skills do you find yourself needing most at work?
To be successful in this job, one needs to be curious and eager to connect and learn from others. Every interaction is important - you may speak with someone who teaches you something new, or provides some industry insight, or refers someone you may not know of, etc. You need to be driven and resilient because this job has a heavy component of sales. Law of averages plays a big role in this job. You are going to hear a lot of rejections. You need to really take pride in the work. If you take pride in what you do, everything else follows.
Do the skills and values that you learned at MHS help you in your professional life?
I take pride in where I come from. Millis is a major part of who I am, and it makes me good at what I do. I work in an industry where pedigree matters but it is hard work that succeeds. You are dealt a hand and need to figure out how to turn the outcome in your favor. It requires resilience and I learned that resiliency during my time in Millis.
Millis is a place where you develop spirit, fire, drive and pride. You make the best of what you are given and strive for the same excellence that everyone else strives for, and achieve. Those values are ingrained in those lucky enough to attend MHS. Hardwork equates to success. Millis has always been an institution that fosters and encourages success, and history shows!

MCAS ELA Testing Next Week
Students in the Class of 2024 (sophomores) will be taking MCAS exams in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math this year, while students in the Class of 2025 (freshmen) will be taking the MCAS Biology Exam. These exams, sponsored by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), are part of the competency determination required for students to graduate from Millis High School. All exams will be computer-based this year.
Sophomores will be taking the MCAS ELA exam next week on March 22 and 23. The tests will begin promptly at 8am each day, and student classroom assignments will be posted throughout the building (they will also been emailed to the students). Students should come in with their ChromeBooks fully charged each day. Though students have the entire school day to complete testing, each day of testing typically takes 2-3 hours.
Parents/Guardians are asked to make sure their students get a good night's sleep before each exam day, have a good breakfast each exam day, and get to school on time each day. We are confident that our students are well-prepared to be successful on these important exams. Thanks to parents/guardians for their support in helping students clear this graduation hurdle. Good luck to our 10 students as they take their MCAS ELA Exams next week!
The schedule for MCAS Exams at MHS this year is as follows:
English Language Arts (Grade 10) - March 22 & 23
Math (Grade 10) - May 17 & 18
Biology (Grade 9) - June 7 & 8

MARISA PARAND
Marisa Parand, DNP, FNP-C
Family Nurse Practitioner
MHS Class of 2011
Did you attend college?
I went to Penn State University for my undergraduate studies focused on general biology and behavioral health sciences. I then attended UMass Medical School for my nursing graduate studies, which included an initial year to get my Registered Nurse licensure, 2 years for my Master of Science degree, and a final year to receive my Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree. Throughout my education, I worked as a nursing assistant, medical scribe, and registered nurse to get as much exposure in the healthcare field as possible.
What is your profession?
I am a Nurse Practitioner specializing in family medicine in a primary care office. My focus is to prevent disease, promote health, and treat a wide range of illnesses in patients of all ages.
A typical day for me includes talking with patients and addressing their health care concerns, performing a physical exam, ordering lab work and/or radiology testing, prescribing medications, referring to specialists if needed, and documenting the visit. I also draw blood and give injections, which is always fun!
What skills do you find yourself needing most at work?
Critical thinking is definitely one of the most essential skills to foster as a Nurse Practitioner. Not one patient will present the same; so it's important to be an active listener and get a thorough history of their concerns, while considering all the different aspects that can be affecting their health including physical, emotional, social and cultural factors. Patience and empathy are also key, so if these skills come natural to you and you enjoy helping others, then I would definitely encourage you to look into nursing!
Do the skills and values that you learned at MHS help you in your professional life?
MHS instilled core skills of leadership and collaboration that set me up for success in my professional life. I do wish there was a newsletter like this when I was in High School, because choosing a career can be overwhelming and stressful at times. If I could give one piece of advice: shadow any professional in a career that you are considering to see if it would be a good fit for you!

Quarter Three Progress Reports Available
February Students of the Month Announced
Grade 9 Nominees: Isabella Briones and Annie Rollag
Winner: Isabella Briones: (nominated twice) "Isabella's ability is outstanding and her work ethic is incredible. Whenever I am speaking in class Isabella gives me her undivided attention and she asks thoughtful, relevant questions on a regular basis. Often a student like Isabella gets overlooked for this award because daily excellence just becomes expected and is taken for granted. I would like her to know that it is not taken for granted." AND "Isabella has maintained a consistent excellence in English, and I imagine, in all of her classes. Sometimes, high-achieving students get overlooked in student of the month, but they, and she, shouldn't. She truly cares about not only her grades, but what she's learning. She's motivated, mature, and also very helpful in class discussions. I'm sure my colleagues would concur."
Grade 10 Nominees: Kristen Kelly and Emily Steiner
Winner: Kristen Kelly: (nominated twice) "Kristen strives to be a good person at all times. In class she helps others whenever she can, she works to include folks both in and outside of class to make sure nobody gets left behind and she is a genuinely nice person." Grade 11 Nominees: Adrian Heredia, Jack Skerry, and Cynthia Arguijo
Winner: Adrian Heredia: "Adrian brightens up the classroom each day. He is a hard worker and is always on top of his grades. He is respectful to his classmates and helps them when they are confused on a topic."
Grade 12 Nominees: Braeden McPhee, Adela El Khoury, Carlson Cantoreggi, and Jess Khan
Winner: Carlson Cantoreggi: "Carlson is a hard worker with a lot passion and drive. He always participates in class and has a lot to add to the class discussions. Jaden Adams
In A Love Letter To My Friends filmmaker Jaden Adams explores the true meaning and significance of friendship in her life through this short film which touches on the raw truths of adolescence and the need for a confidant in a turbulent world.
Dulce Abreu
First time filmmaker Dulce Abreu worked at a supermarket during COVID. She noticed some of her deaf customers were struggling to understand people because of the masks. Seal of Biliteracy 2022
Millis Public Schools is pleased to announce that we are again partnering with the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) to offer the State Seal of Biliteracy. The State Seal of Biliteracy was adopted by Massachusetts to “recognize high school graduates who attain high functional and academic levels of proficiency in English and a world language, meaning that those students can function in those languages in authentic, real-life situations.”
The purposes of the State Seal of Biliteracy are to:
Encourage students to study and master languages;
Certify attainment of biliteracy skills;
Recognize the value of language diversity;
Provide employers with a method of identifying people with language and biliteracy skills;
Provide universities with a method to recognize and give credit to applicants for the attainment of high-level skills in languages;
Prepare students with skills that will benefit them in the labor market and the global society; and
Strengthen intergroup communication and honor the multiple cultures and languages in a community. (603 CMR 31.02(3))
The Seal of Biliteracy is available to graduating seniors who have met approved standards in both English and not less than one world language. These may be students who have been successful in acquiring second language proficiency or those who live in a home where English is not the primary language and they have attained oral and written proficiency in that language. The criteria for receiving the Seal of Biliteracy are as follows:
Earn a score of 472 or higher on the Grade 10 ELA MCAS test or retest, or satisfy the ELA modified competency determination for graduation (successful completion of a relevant high school course).
A score of I-5 (Intermediate-High) or higher on the Assessment of Performance Toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) test
Satisfy all other graduation requirements
For ELL students: ACCESS for ELLs is administered to English learners each year and may be used to satisfy the English language criteria for the State Seal of Biliteracy. Students must demonstrate English proficiency on ACCESS for ELLs with an overall score of at least level 4.2 and a composite literacy score of at least level 3.9.
Millis High School will be offering a no-cost administration of the AAPPL test in April (students who sign up for the AAPPL but do not take or complete the exam, will be charged). The AAPPL is an online exam that measures a student’s proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in a world language. Please note that the Seal of Biliteracy score of I-5 is a fairly high standard and only students with extensive study or experience with the language should access the testing opportunity.
Students interested in pursuing a State Seal of Biliteracy should fill out the form:
“Seal of Biliteracy Sign-Up”
This can also be found on the homepage of the Millis High School website (hs.millisps.org) Sign up by March 18, 2022 (a link to the form has also been emailed to all seniors). Additional information on the AAPPL test can be found at

Account Manager at BigBelly
MHS Class of 2011
Did you attend college? Yes, I attended the University of New Hampshire and graduated with a degree in Community and Environmental Planning from the College of Life Sciences and Agriculture (COLSA).
What is your profession? I am an Account Manager for BigBelly - a smart waste & recycling solutions company for public spaces. I ensure customer success by setting them up for installation, training, and continued support throughout the contract of their deployment.
What skills do you find yourself needing most at work? Communication, relationship building and the ability and enthusiasm for self-learning. Also, public speaking and presentation skills are paramount in the work that I do and I find myself needing those skills daily.
Do the skills and values that you learned at MHS help you in your professional life? Yes, absolutely. Millis was awesome. I definitely learned how to work hard, build strong relationships and friendships, and my creativity was always encouraged. A lot of the faculty had a great attitude and enthusiasm to teach, and something I find in my real and professional life is that if you go in with a good attitude you’re ¾ of the way there.

Host Families Needed
Would you enjoy sharing your home with our incoming Spanish Consular Classroom Assistant beginning in late August? Each year, the Spanish government makes it possible for Millis to host a language and cultural assistant through their international exchange program. The consular assistant arrives in late August and stays until the end of April sharing the Spanish language and culture with students in our immersion and non-immersion classes on the elementary and secondary level while also learning about the culture of the United States through both the classroom and homestay experiences. For the 2022-23 school year, Millis Public Schools will have at least one, most likely more than one, Spanish assistant so we are looking for two or three families. Please let us know if you are interested! If you have a preference of gender, we may be able to accommodate that.
A number of Millis families have shared their homes with consular assistants over the past decade; all that is required is a private bedroom for the student, breakfast and dinner, and wireless access. The family would also be responsible for picking up the student at Logan Airport in late August. The homestay is designed as a cultural exchange experience and does not include childcare or household responsibilities. The district provides bus transportation to school each day and lunch in one of our cafeterias. Students hold medical insurance and have had a full series of vaccinations. All assistants are non-smoking. They are eager to share their language and culture with a family!
Please contact the district's main office at 508-376-7000 X 619 or aosborne@millisschools.org if you would be interested in hosting for the 2022-23 school year.
