Newsletter Issue 6
Term 1 - 5 April 2023
Principal’s Update
Kia ora, Nameste, Talofa, Konnichiwa, Guten Tag, Gidday, Vannakkam, ni Hao, Kia orana, Hola, Salam, Sa wat deekha, Dia Dhuit, Goeie Dag, Bonjour, Καλημέρα, Greetings everyone
It is hard to believe that the end of the term is already upon us but, looking back at what we have accomplished as a school and community, it is not surprising it has flown by!
Bellevue has been lifted up by our community during this term.
From the enormous support with our myriad of sporting events (including the rearrangements!), our involvement in the teachers’ and principals’ strike action, our first hui for whānau Māori - both the guidance we received preparing for this and the wisdom shared by those who attended, the many voluntary offerings from families to;
tidy up our school grounds
improve our website
share expertise with our tamariki during our cultural day
provide extra curricular sporting opportunities
keep our Road Patrol team safe and supported
raise funds and inject even more FUN into school events,
to strategically planning and prioritising resourcing for our school year to keep the health, safety, learning and wellbeing of our school community at the fore.
WE THANK YOU - it is a privilege to work in a school that reflects such a true example of me mahi tahi tatou mo te oranga o te katoa.
The last few weeks of the term have been hard on our team with lots of sickness and relievers hard to find. I’d also like to thank our teaching and support staff for the wonderful work they do on a day to day basis, as well as the flexibility they show and their willingness to ‘go the extra mile’ to support our students (or one another!) when the going gets tough.
Property Update
Please see last week’s newsletter for an outline of the property ‘need to knows’ as we prepare for the weathertightness work on our administration block and our long awaited staffroom upgrade. We anticipate the build work, which will affect access from the Junior side of the school to the Middles, parking inside and outside the school grounds and the location of the main office, will last all of Term 2 and 3 at least. Please consider our school team when you drop your child in Term 2 by parking further away and walking in if possible.
You will notice two portable cabins outside the front of the hall. The first of these as you approach them from the main gate will be the administration office from the beginning of Term 2. Please head here with any enquiries or to sign your child in or out.
The second cabin will be Annette’s office and a workroom/medical room as needed.
School Production - postponed until 2024
Unfortunately the scheduled construction work, which is set to continue throughout Terms 2 and 3, has resulted in us having to reprioritise spaces around the school. During these terms, with it being winter and limited access around the school as well as spaces for groups to gather, managing health, safety and wellbeing will be our priority. As a result of this, the school production will be postponed until 2024.
We look forward to being able to make this a top priority once things have settled on the property front.
Annual Emergency Evacuation and Reunification Date - 15 September
The Board has confirmed the date for our Annual Emergency Evacuation and Reunification Practice as Friday 15 September - the Friday of the week before the final week of Term 3. We recognise that this practice is an inconvenience for families and are very grateful for your support with this so we wish to give as much notice as possible. We will send home your child’s emergency contacts for you to review and return in plenty of time prior to this.
Music Bus
Thanks for your patience with the postponement of the music bus concert scheduled for Friday last week. The music Bus is booked for Friday 28 April, same time of 1.45 -2.45pm.
For those families interested in music lessons for their child who missed the opportunity to pick up a flier on Friday afternoon, there are extra fliers in the school office - please pop in and collect one.
Learning Celebrations
Thank you to all families who attended the Learning Celebration three way conferences this week.
We know that one of the most significant factors in raising student achievement is making educationally powerful connections with children, their parents and whānau so that students participate and contribute more fully to their learning.
Teacher Only Day - Monday 24 April - School Closed
Please note that school will not be open on Monday or Tuesday (ANZAC day) after the break.
The teaching and learning team will spend Monday engaged in professional development. Our teacher aides are attending a session focused on supporting dysregulated students. The teachers will be exploring some of the resources that support the Aotearoa New Zealand Histories (ANZH) learning area of the NZC, and which are right on our doorstep. We will also be engaging with the ‘why’ behind the curriculum refresh and considering how this aligns to our school vision and local curriculum. Working with Matt Richards, our PLD provider, we will collaboratively plan learning activities that integrate the intention of the ANZH with our existing school approaches of learning through play and developing student agency.
Artsplash Choir - Highnotes
Although we do not yet have a confirmed date for the Artsplash choir performance, we know that this will be held during the week of 11-15 September. Choir practises start next term so if your child is interested in joining this group you may want to mark this date in your diary.
Start date Term 2 - Wednesday 26 April
Finally, a reminder that this Thursday ((6 April) is the final day of this term, with Good Friday on 7 April.
With the term beginning with a Teacher Only Day (24/4) followed by ANZAC Day holiday (25/4), we will look forward to seeing our tamariki back at school on Wednesday 26 April.
You can expect our first newsletter for Term 2 on Wednesday 3 May. Any necessary communications prior to this will come out via email or as updates on our closed group Bellevue Facebook Page, if you are not already, you may wish to consider following this.
Ngā manaakitanga
Annette and the Bellevue Whānau
Congratulations
... to Krish and Dominic for the wonderful achievements they shared with me in their cricket outside school!
Thanks
... to these fabulous ex pupils for taking time to come a paint our faces ready for the fun run!
Reflections on the term.
Dogs on School Grounds
Bellevue School values the benefits that interactions with animals can bring to our school community. We encourage appropriate behaviour when interacting with dogs so that students have a positive experience and to reduce the risk of accident or injury.
Please take a look at the guidelines for bringing your dog onto school grounds by clicking the above button to access our school policy site (username bellevue-newlands, password 'grow') and searching 'dogs'.
Thank you
- To the following parents who accompanied Hub 2 on their trip to Te Wharewaka and Te Papa on Tuesday last week - Richa, Anna, Cara, Nadeeka, Sophia and Adam
- To Cara, Bindya, Rebecca and Nadiene for supporting our students at the Northern Zone Football tournament on Tuesday last week.
- To Chris McLean for volunteering his time and skills to set up the school website so that it is easily found by a search engine.
- To Jennifer Natta for making our Whare Iti habitable again so we can use it during the upcoming build work.
- Thank you to the Sport, Education, Community and Cultural Foundation (SECC) who very kindly donated a full class hockey set (30 balls and 30 sticks) to Bellevue School.
Willing volunteers wanted to assist with resource making.
As you will be aware, our Hub 2 (year 2) teachers and students are embarking on their Better Start Literacy journey. This is an exciting time of learning for both the teachers and students. It is also a time where lots of resource making is required:
- Laminating
- Cutting
- Bagging and boxing resources
If you are able to spare a couple of hours in your week to help with this task the Hub 2 team would be enormously grateful.
Please contact Anne Gullen - anne@bellevue-newlands.school.nz to find out more.
Thank you!
‘Tōku Anō Ao’
On Friday 24 March the school took part in ‘Tōku Anō Ao’, a Cultural Day that allowed students to learn about different cultures present in our school.
We had workshops from the Chinese community, Iranian, South Korean, Cook Island, South African, Sri Lankan and Indian communities.
The students took part in a variety of activities ranging from art work, dressing up in national costume, pillow fighting, dancing, drumming and creating headdresses.
The students and parents who joined in had a wonderful time and a lot of learning happened.
A huge thank you to the parents and supporting friends of the school for your contribution to our wonderful day, by either leading workshops, and/or teaching the students about your cultures. Our thanks go to
Xinhua Wang, Sophia Wang,- China;
Jennifer Dixon,- Korea;
Manasi Sadaye, Bindya Boovaragamurthy - India;
Janani Ramana, Mohan Sudusinghe, Ramana Thinagarajah & Krishnakumari Ramana - Sri Lanka;
Aggz Pilitati and Rikki Pilitati - Cook Islands;
and Athena Maghsoudi and Richa Taneja - Iran.
We learned so much and experienced a little of your wonderful cultures.
Good Time Music Academy
As the Music Bus has been re-booked for Friday 28 April from 1.45pm - 2.45pm, here is the information about this from last week's newsletter:
Goodtime Music Academy is now offering lessons at Bellevue School and is taking enrolments for Term 2 in-school music lessons now. If you want your child to be a part of these award winning music lessons, and may not want to commit to taking your child anywhere after school, then in-school lessons may be the solution for you. Learn in a group setting, and choose between Drums, Guitar, Keyboard, Ukulele. Or try their 'Intro to Music' course. Please visit www.goodtimemusicacademy.co.nz/learn-at-school to enrol and enquire. You can also call them on 04 568 2237. Spaces are limited so get in quick!
Library News
Classes visiting the library this week will have the option of taking some extra books for the holidays. These will be due back in week 2.
Happy reading everyone.
Wacky Hair Day
Student council would like to support the communities affected by Cyclone Gabrielle.
Bellevue will be holding a Wacky Hair day on Tuesday 2 May.
Please dress your hair wacky and bring a gold coin donation.
We will add our collection to the Red Cross Appeal.
Trip to Te Wherewaka and Te Papa
Hub 2 enjoyed their visit to Te Wherewaka and Te Papa last Wednesday. Thank you to all the parents who accompanied the students on the trip.
Room 6, Hub 2, took a break from exploring nature in our waterfront.
Maori used these paddles to move their peace and war wakas. Boys were only allowed in the war waka. Our girls thought that was a strange idea!
Sports News
Touch
Touch has finished for the term with all the teams having a great season! Congratulations to Taniwha Yr 5/6 team who came first in the boy's division.
Y 1/2 Blaze - They went from not playing before, to being a great little team that got better each week and even came away with a few wins.
Y 3/4 Bandits - This team had many new players, they were always having fun on the field and put in 100% each week.
Y 5/6 Blitz - Week after week they played hard and fast. They played a great game each week growing in skills individually and as a team.
Y 5/6 Taniwha - With 5 players on the field and only 5 in the team they had their work cut out for them. They played hard each week and managed to take away 1st place trophy for the boy's division.
FUNrun
It was great to finally find a break in the rain to do our FUNRun on Monday afternoon. All of the colours looked amazing! Thank you to the teachers, whānau, Newlands Intermediate face painters and FUNdraisers who all played a part in creating such a fun experience for our tamariki.
We have already raised approximately $850 through Pizzas and Juicies! Can any outstanding sponsorship money please be sent into the Office TOMORROW.
Northern Zone and Junior Invitational Cross Country
It was amazing to see so many enthusiastic and resilient children try out for Northern Zone Cross Country last week. They dealt with changing plans, wind, and in some cases even rain as they gave the run their best shot! Congratulations to those who have made it through to the Junior Invitational Cross Country and Senior Northern Zones.
Property Update (from last newsletter for reference only)
Things to be aware of once work begins during the term break and into Term 2 (from Good Friday - 7 April) :
- Fencing will go up around the back of Rooms 4 - 6 to prepare the site before the end of term.
- Once term ends additional fencing will be erected along the path behind the staffroom so there will be no access around the back of the staffroom. The only access from the junior area of the school to the middle area will be through the car park (adults only) or around the bottom of the school, past rooms 12 - 15 and the Jubilee Corner.
- Unsupervised students will not be able to move through the car park at any time.
- There will be NO car parking within the school car park. Limited parks will be used for our staff, the remainder of whom will be parking on the street.
- During this time we ask that you consider the health and safety of our children and team and park as far away from the school as you are able, to avoid putting our road patrollers, community or the public at risk.
- During times when children are out doors there will be no site access for deliveries.
- At all other times vehicles will be escorted.
- The middles playground will be closed - students will be free to play in both other spaces.

Can you help us? FUNdraisers Committee Meetings
Our little team of 5 need more support – WE NEED YOU!
Gosh do we LOVE to bring the FUN to our kids with events through the year, and we have some really interesting ideas we would like to bring to the school. We however don’t have quite enough resources to make it all work. Do you have some of that elusive ‘spare time’ and would you like to give back to our cool school? If so…
Our next committee meeting is scheduled for 7pm on 27 April 2023, location TBC.
We hope to see you there! Or get in touch with Rebecca: fundraisers@bellevue-newlands.school.nz
What’s all this fun and FUNdraising for you ask?
What are we fundraising for? What have we spent our funds raised on?
Our wish list is updated often, and is linked via our FUNdraisers webpage:
https://www.bellevue-newlands.school.nz/fundraisers
If you work for a company that may be interested in supporting our school with any of these targets, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with our principal Annette with details :)
