What is Delta 8?
Psychoactive substance found in the Cannabis sativa plant, which can be found in both marijuana and hemp. Delta-8 THC has psychoactive and intoxicating effects. These products have not been approved by the FDA. Since there has not been an approval process, there is no telling what concentration levels are present, what other additives are included, where it is derived from, etc. Some of these products are labeled as a “hemp product,” misleading consumers to believe there is not a psychoactive component to these products.
How is it being sold to minors?
There are no legal age parameters set by federal law. Delta-8-THC is classified as a legal hemp product, and federal law does not specify any age limits or other parameters that affect who can access legal hemp products. Instead, the legal age for buying Delta-8 is decided at the state level. The legal age to purchase vape devices at any gas station or shop is 21.
As is being seen with the current vaping situation, many of these products are packaged and labeled in ways to appeal to adolescents, but that doesn’t mean that it is safe for children nor is it legal on any school grounds or buses.
Delta 8 Craze | Dangers of Delta-8
How is it legal?
It is (currently), but only if it is derived from hemp and contains no more than 0.3% of delta-8 THC, which is the limit under federal law to be considered legal.
There are several different methods used to extract the delta-8 THC from CBD and many of those use strong acids or metal catalysts. These products are not being tested to ensure those catalysts are safe to use or for any residual that is left behind.
Bottomline
Delta-8 THC has psychoactive and intoxicating effects responsible for the “high” people may experience from using cannabis. Delta-8 THC products likely expose consumers to much higher levels of the substance than are naturally occurring in hemp cannabis raw extracts.
National poison control centers received 2,362 exposure cases of delta-8 THC products between January 1, 2021 and February 28, 2022. Of the 2,362 exposure cases:
58% involved adults, 41% involved pediatric patients less than 18 years of age.
40% involved unintentional exposure to delta-8 THC and 82% of these unintentional exposures affected pediatric patients.
70% required health care facility evaluation, of which 8% resulted in admission to a critical care unit; 45% of patients requiring health care facility evaluation were pediatric patients.

Portrait of an Eagle: Student Spotlight
Eagles in our three autism support classrooms at Winding Creek Elementary School joined forces recently to submit a design for the Special Olympics Area M t-shirt design contest. Their design - themed Every Star Shines a Little Differently - was selected as the winner and will be printed on t-shirts to be distributed to all participants at the Area M Special Olympics on May 18, 2023. Without a doubt, this is a great example of our Eagles displaying communication, collaboration, and empathy throughout this project. They are a Portrait of an Eagle!
Congratulations! #CVproud
