Back to School 2023-2024 Newsletter
Hello North Syracuse Central School District parents, guardians, teachers and staff,
As we embark on this new school year, I want to express my sincere hope that it is going to be a wonderful and successful year for each and every one of us. Together, we will continue to provide our students with the best possible education and support to help them reach their fullest potential.
The picture I’m sharing this week is about connections. I am with two students who, although they are very young, already have a long history with the NSCSD. They are not only the daughters of a CNS graduate; they are the grandchildren of a former staff member. They are already connected with our schools and district and our goal is to make those connections with every student.
As I walk through our school buildings every year, I am amazed by the connections I learn about. Our students, teachers, and staff know each other, and we truly care about each other. In fact, many of our students come back to teach and work in the district. We live and work together, and we make this community the incredible place that it is. The North Syracuse Central School District is a special place with people who truly want to be here. Today and always, I am proud to be a Northstar.
Our district has a long and storied history, and our goal is to honor that history and the people who have made us who we are. Throughout the school year, we will be celebrating our history alongside the great things taking place in the present. We’ve asked our teachers to share their good news and accomplishments with us, and I hope you will too.
Thank you for helping us make this a great start to the school year. I look forward to continued collaboration and making new connections.
Sincerely,
Daniel D. Bowles, Superintendent of Schools
WANTED: members of the Apple Muffin Gang
The North Syracuse Central School District is interested in finding members of the Apple Muffin Gang to celebrate its contributions to the district and state history.
Back in 1987, students in Mary Craven’s fourth grade class at KWS Bear Road Elementary School campaigned to create a law making the apple muffin the official state muffin. The students wrote to state legislators promoting their bill, handed out countless apple muffins, and made four trips to the Capitol to lobby for it. They tasted victory when the state Assembly and Senate passed the bill and former Governor Mario M. Cuomo signed it into law, making the apple muffin the official muffin of New York.
To celebrate this past accomplishment, the district decided to plant an apple tree and install a monument outside the Jerome F. Melvin District Office Building. The district is now looking for students and teachers involved with the Apple Muffin Gang to further celebrate this historic contribution. If that’s you, please reach out to our school information officer by emailing Laurie Cook at lcook@nscsd.org.
