Holy Cross Catholic School
From the Desk of Dr. Wagner
January 26, 2024
This week I had the opportunity to speak a the School Choice Rally in Topeka in support of our state funding helping families choose where they want to send their children to school. We are so blessed to be partnered with the Catholic Education Foundation that helps provide traditional and Tax-Credit scholarships to students that desire a Catholic education. This is a topic that means so much and I felt honored to be chosen to speak at the Capital.
As everyone is aware, we have had four snow days already this school year. We had built in three days into our calendar. In order to not disrupt the calendar, we are going to add 10 minutes to each school starting Monday, February 5th. Our new dismissal time will be 3:40pm for the remainder of the school year. If we do have another snow day, we will need to revisit the calendar and add days.
Holy Cross Summer Camp Registration Opens Monday, February 5th for Holy Cross families. Our summer camp fills up quickly, so we encourage Holy Cross families that are interested to sign up before it opens to the public. Every year when it is open to the public we fill up within the first week. We would love your family to join us on an adventure that provides a fun, interactive environment that provides learning and discovery.
Catholic Schools Week kicks-off this Sunday at 10:30am Mass with Open House at the school from 9:30am-12pm. . If the students wear their uniform, they will receive an out of uniform pass. Please see the flyer below for more information about the remainder of the week. We end the week celebrating our community at our largest fundraiser, Celebration. Thank you to all of those that donated their time, treasure and talent to make this happen. Wow! This community really knows how to come together for the most important cause the future of our church, God's children!
Hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Go Hornets and Chiefs!
Please help us keep our students safe! This past week we had several near accidents because parents were stopping to let their children out by the two entrances in the back parking lot. With our two car lines (Preschool and K-8) going, it is important that we are following the flow of traffic. Additionally, when people stop, our line backs up on 95th street which is very unsafe and the Overland Park Police Department is alerted. I appreciate your help as I know we share a common goal of keeping our kids safe.
Spelling Bee
Congratulations to Ivy L. winning first place in our Spelling Bee and Lindsey K. winning second place! Great job, ladies and all the participants!

Math Learning Opportunity
Math+: Advanced Mathematics Learning Opportunity
Gain an edge – with skills that matter
This is Mr. Greg Owsley, co-founder and curriculum writer of RedwoodPrep. I’ve
taught at Rockhurst High School for the last 16 years, most recently serving as
STEAM Director. I will be teaching another addition of Math+ this Spring for 6th to
8th grade students.
I strongly believe in Math+ and would encourage your family to participate. Each
Math+ course explores 1 major idea included in Stanford University’s introductory
math sequence. This is world-class content tailored to younger students. I continue to
be impressed by how students get excited and passionate about math during Math+.
We want students to be excited about math – and Math+ does a great job doing just
that.
This season’s course will be taught at Rockhurst High School on Thursdays from 4:00
to 5:00 pm starting on Thursday, March 21st for six weeks. The program will cost
$250. Families can sign-up at www.RedwoodPrep.com.
This Spring, the Math+ program will be focused on Logic and Proofs. In
Mathematics, logic and proofs represent the most rigorous way to ‘solve’ a problem
and form the backbone of advanced math. These critical skills have become
increasingly tested in standardized exams with ~20% of SAT Math questions testing
basic logic.
Most interested students can succeed in Math+. I find that students with a gift for
math or a real desire to participate can succeed and learn a lot. Students interested in
advanced math classes, high performance on standardized exams or general math
ability will particularly benefit.
If you have any questions, please reach out. I hope to work with you and your family
on this exciting program.
Best,
Mr. Greg Owsley
