SPAULDING HIGH'S DECEMBER NEWSLETTER
Happy Holidays!

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
SHS AFROTC Cadet Captain Noah Jackson was selected to attend this summer’s Air
Force Junior ROTC Flight Academy. Noah will attend one of 12 participating aviation colleges for 8 weeks and earn his private pilot certificate, launching a career as a military or civilian pilot. To put this in perspective, there are approximately 100,000 AFJROTC cadets nationwide and only 171 were selected this year. This is an all expenses paid program valued at $25,000.
Cadet Colonel Jackson Rup was selected as one of 200 finalists competing for the AFJROTC J-100 Scholarship. Jackson will complete the competitive process during an interview with a panel of three Air Force ROTC representatives. If selected as one of the top one hundred for the scholarship, Jackson will earn a full Air Force ROTC Scholarship including room and board to the college of his choice.
This scholarship is valued at over $150,000.
NEWS from our AFROTC
SHS AFJROTC Drill Teams hosted a great meet against Salem and Pinkerton Academy last Saturday. The Color Guard, New Cadet, and Dual Armed Exhibition Teams all placed first. Additionally, freshman Cadet Jack Martin earned a New Cadet Individual Drill Regulation medal.
SPAULDING MUSIC DEPARTMENT NEWS
15 musicians from SHS were accepted into the NH Music Educators Association Classical All-State Festival this year! These students were chosen from hundreds around the state because of their talent and preparedness and we are so excited for them and proud of the hard work they put in! The students are Asa Buchakjian-Tweedy, Emily Buinicky, Isabella Dumont, Sarah Gibson, Lilliyana Henderson, Heidi Jenkins, Nicholas Kanelos III, Anastasia Knutsent, Christopher Letellier, Arthur Lovins, Gabriella Lugo, Violet Nelson, Mollie Pedersen, Joshua Turpin, and Isabella Veno.
Furthermore, 4 Spaulding students were selected for the All-State Chamber Festival because they were in the highest percentage of scorers nationwide at their All-State Audition. These students are Emily Buinicky, Nicholas Kanelos III, Arthur Lovins, and Joshua Turpin.
Congratulations to all of these amazing musicians!
The Holiday Village
The Spaulding High School music department just wrapped up its Annual Holiday Village Concert and this year added a new element of an art show, featuring artwork from students in grades K-12 around the district.
Santa leads the sing-a-long
This is the first year village has been hosted at the high school and people loved being in their auditorium and seeing the halls of the high school decorated and festive!

News from National Honor Society
NHS welcomed 43 new members, ranging from grades 10-12. We have been working closely with numerous elementary schools to bring kindness and model positivity in the younger grades. With these schools, NHS members have completed "trunk or treats", craft nights, and worked on multiple seasoned themed festivals. For the remainder of the school year, members will continue to bring SAT prep to students using the monthly Head Scratchers puzzles, working to aid others through peer tutoring, and soon will be partnering with Project Linus in an attempt to bring warmth, during the winter months, to those in need
What is happening in Advisory this month?
Students continued to work on Xello, a career and college readiness platform. Topics covered this month were exploring career factors, career and lifestyle costs, career demand, and job interviews. This important work helps students in choosing a pathway after graduation. The Senior Portfolio, a graduation requirement, was also presented to our senior class. The Senior Portfolio must be completed in Xello by April 1st.
Some exciting internships by our students...
In December, five students presented their final research projects as part of the internship at Frisbie Hospital. Topics ranged from stress on the heart and healthcare burnout to psych patients in the emergency department. Spaulding High School also partnered with Rochester Opera House to provide students with opportunities to participate in acting and assistant stage manager internships. This year, three students participated in this year's internship for the Christmas Carol.
On January 24th, all students who completed an internship, work based learning, or independent study this semester will participate in an ELO Showcase to share their experience with other students.
Mental Health and Wellness continues to be a focus at SHS...
After two students helped facilitate the student-led Safe Schools Conference in November, a team of students attended the screening of the documentary Anxious Nation to discuss the mental health crisis and brainstorm how students can be better supported at school. The students are working to create a Mental Wellness Leadership Team at Spaulding. Students who are interested in joining this club can reach out to Ms. Lovell.
FREE COLLEGE APPLICATION DAY
We are excited to report that in November, 121 of our Seniors participated in FREE college application day. 272 applications were submitted to colleges and our students saved $8735.00!
DEBATE TEAM NEWS
The Spaulding Debate Team hosted a Debate Tournament on Saturday, December 9th. Visiting schools that competed were Portsmouth High School and Oyster River High School. Additionally, Bishop Brady High School and Second Nature Academy came to observe. In total, there were roughly 50 students in attendance. The topic was, "Resolved: the United States federal government should substantially increase its military presence in the arctic" Spaulding High School Senior Julia McCarthy won Best Overall Speaker and other Spaulding teams walked away with a total of 11 individual wins.
Anita Cook retires!
We want to wish Anita Cook, our CTE administrative assistant, a happy retirement after 18 years at Spaulding! She will be missed.
