Good day, SEMS Family!
It is a great day to be a Stallion!
Tomorrow is our first day of the 23-24 School Year! We are super excited about our thematic school and all of the new opportunities our students will experience. Each week you will receive a copy of our newsletter. Why should you read this? Because you want to know what's happening at Southeast Vocational and Career Middle School. For example:

Registration
Please log into Parent Portal today to make sure your student is completely registered.
- If you cannot log in, your student(s) has been withdrawn and CANNOT start August 21, 2023.
- If you see and gree "projected," your student is not completely registered and CANNOT start August 21, 2023.

First Day of School - IMPORTANT
MINDSET MONDAY
Car riders and walkers may enter the building at 7:45 am
Bus riders will enter the building as the buses arrive
Schedules:
Car riders and walkers schedules are given in the main lobby
Bus riders are given in the cafeteria
Lockers:
Not issued until Wednesday - only bring one notebook and a pencil/pen. NO BOOKBAGS needed
Dismissal:
Begins at 2:55 pm

We are starting Mindset Mondays on August 21, 2023
Mindset Mondays will be dedicated to enrichment opportunities, social-emotional learning, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) based learning, career exploration, and academic intervention.
Mindset Monday school hours are 8:00 am - 3:00 pm. Transportation, breakfast, and lunch will be provided for students.
Each student will be assigned to a set of community partners for an entire semester. During the semester, each student will have the opportunity to experience hands-on learning projects, learn about careers, participate in academic enrichment and intervention activities, as well as social-emotional learning.
We are extremely excited about this new opportunity for our students!
Tuesday - Friday
Car riders and walkers may enter the building at 7:45 am

If a copy of a schedule is needed, students need to go to their grade level office to receive one
Lockers:
Not issued until Wednesday - only bring one notebook and a pencil/pen. NO BOOKBAGS needed
Dismissal:
Begins at 4:25 pm

Our students will have an extended school day, Tuesdays through Fridays:
Arrival: 8:00 am (breakfast 7:45 am)
Dismissal: 4:30 pm
The extended school day includes
- Six 77-minute classes and a 30-minute lunch
- Two electives each day
- Passion-based learning day

SEMS Expectations
The following expectations ensure the safety of our students, and our attention is on education.
We will continue to focus on the following expectations:
- Chromebooks are required for all students for their academic success. lease ensure students bring their Chromebook to school DAILY, charged and without damage.
- Student IDs must be worn and visible while in the building and on the bus. Students must have an ID for lunch. They will need to purchase one for $5 during their 1st period if they are without an ID.
- Late arrival to school without a parent will result in after-school detention.
- Backpacks and large bags should be stored in student lockers
- No headgear (Ex. hats, hair scarves, hair bonnets, bandanas...etc.) If worn, students will be asked to remove their headgear. Continuation to wear headgear, a call will be made, and the student will receive after-school detention.
- No open-toe or open-back shoes (Ex. slide-on, flip-flops, bubble Crocs, slippers...etc.) If worn, students will be asked not to wear the shoes again. If worn again, a call will be made, and the student will receive after-school detention.
- 8. Cell phones usage is not permitted during the school day
No fighting, posturing to fight, instigating a fight, or recording a fight (zero tolerance)
- This will result in suspension ranging from a 5-days out-of-school to a disciplinary hearing.
No weapons or dangerous objects. This includes toy weapons, BB guns, tasers, etc. (zero tolerance)
- This will result in an automatic 10-day out-of-school suspension pending a disciplinary hearing.
These are non-negotiable expectations. Students who do not follow these expectations will receive a consequence ranging from a loss of privileges to out-of-school suspension and a district-level hearing.
GENERAL INFORMATION
- School Hours:
Tuesdays-Fridays: 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
- Students can enter the building at 7:45 a.m. (There is no supervision for car riders and walkers before 7:45 a.m.)
- Student IDs: Must be worn at all times while in the building. Replacement IDs are $5.00 and issued during lunch
- Lockers: The sharing of lockers is not permitted at SEMS. Replacement locks are $5.00
- Backpacks and Purses: All SEMS students must store their bags in their lockers during the school day. Students are allowed to carry one small purse throughout the school day. The expectation is that purses are no larger than an 8.5x11-inch sheet of notebook paper.
- SEMS uniforms are no longer required for students; however, students are expected to follow the HSD Dress Code Policy. CLICK HERE for specific guidelines regarding appropriate attire for your student.
- Water Bottle: Students can bring a refillable water bottle to school.
- Early Dismissal: We know that sometimes students need to be picked up early from school. We ask that if you need to pick up between 2:30 pm and 2:50 pm, please contact the school office by phone (314-953-7702).

PTSA
NO WEAPONS IN SCHOOL
- We encourage families to discuss why guns and other weapons (pellet/bb-guns, toy guns, knives, or any item that could be considered a weapon) are not allowed at school or on the bus. We want our students to learn in a safe environment!
- Students bringing weapons or toy weapons can be suspended for up to 180 days or expelled.
- Students should immediately report any concerns about a gun (including pellet/bb-guns, toy guns, knives, or any item that could be considered a weapon) to a staff member or use the student concern form or HSD's Safety Tip Line.
Saftey Tip Hotline
If you become aware of anything that threatens the safety of our learning community, immediately alert an administrator or file a report through the anonymous HSD Safety Tip Line.
The HSD Safety Tip Line is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year online by emailing tipline@hazelwoodschools.org or calling the phone line at 314-281-4584. The tip line is an element of the district's No Guns in School Campaign.

CELL PHONE POLICY
If a SEMS student brings a cell phone or headphones to school, they must be silenced and placed out of sight from the beginning to the end of the instructional day.
- Silenced: Ringer and notification sound off.
- Placed out of sight: Stored safely in the student's assigned locker, purse, or pencil pouch.
