Dear Eaton Families,
Please consider supporting our Eaton PTA Spirit Night at Islands on Monday, January 23rd, from 5:00pm- 10:00pm.
Our Eaton Science Fair for 3rd-5th graders is Friday, January 27th. Students will bring projects to the multi-purpose room on Friday morning when they arrive to school. Projects will be judged from 8:15-9:30. Parents are invited to view projects from 10:30-12:00. Participating students have received a letter with additional information from Mrs. Shanahan. Please email her at kellie.shanahan@nhcs.net
January marks the annual observance of School Board Appreciation Month in North Carolina. We appreciate our locally elected board members, and all they do for our students in New Hanover County Schools.

Please save the date for Eaton's STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts & Mathematics) Night, February 23rd, 5:30-6:30. More details to come.
We are in need of 2 liter bottles!- Please send in empty, rinsed out, 2 liter bottles for our upcoming STREAM night. Please leave the labels on the 2 liter bottles if possible.
Eaton Schoolwide Book Club will begin in February! For our 2023 selection, we will be reading The World According to Humphrey by Betty Birney. This book is available in many places in paperback, eBook, and audiobook formats if you would like your family to participate at home. More details will be coming soon about daily readings and questions as well as a culminating project.
From the author’s website:
You can learn a lot about life by observing another species.
That's what Humphrey was told when he was first brought to Room 26. And boy is it true!
There are always adventures in the classroom and each weekend he gets to sleep over with a different student, like Lower-Your-Voice-A.J. and Speak-Up Sayeh. Humphrey learns to read, write, shoot rubber bands (only in self-defense, of course), and much more. With a lock-that-doesn't-lock and an adventurous spirit, Humphrey's life would be perfect if only the teacher, Mrs. Brisbane, wasn't out to get him?
With a fresh voice and an engaging, hamster's-eye view of school, families, and treats to hide in a cheek pouch, Betty G. Birney's Humphrey will elicit laughter and a new appreciation for classroom hamsters everywhere.
*First in a 12-book series!

Volunteer Information
All volunteers must complete the training orientation, complete and turn in a volunteer application form, and take the volunteer assessment with 80% or higher each school year.
Volunteer application forms are linked below, and are also available in the front office.
All field trip chaperones must become a Level II volunteer, which requires a background check through NHCS. Background checks are good for three years. You can log into your account to check your expiration date, or contact Mrs. Allen. The NHCS background check system is linked below. Level 2 volunteers must also complete the orientation and assessment each year.
All volunteers must be at least 18 years old.
Level I
Parents, family, or community members volunteering to assist students in a supervised setting are not required to undergo a background check if they are continually supervised by school personnel during the school day.
Level II
Parents, family, or community members volunteering to assist students in an unsupervised setting away from school personnel are deemed Level II Volunteers. We also ask that all chaperones become Level II volunteers, as well as those interested in assisting in our media center and cafeteria at Eaton Elementary. An applicant designated a Level II Volunteer must complete the online application and the criminal background check. Applications must be completed at least two weeks prior to the time you wish to begin volunteering. The cost of background checks are $20.
