Mindfulness-Based SEL in Action
December 2019
Note from the Editors
Welcome! December can fly by with special events peppering your calendar. How do you fuel your emotional well-being to stay balanced during this busy time of year? Our emotional hygiene is just as important as our physical hygiene. Let's make a point to make time for ourselves! Our upcoming book study Dare to Lead, by Brene Brown, will be a great opportunity to feed your mind.
If you find yourself with questions related to mindfulness or SEL we would be happy to help. Be sure to check out our upcoming learning opportunities in MLP/ MyLearningPlan for updates.
We invite you to share this newsletter with others who may benefit from all that is here. :-)

We Regulate
Yoga is a great way to connect our mind, breath, and body to raise our self-awareness. Click on the picture to checkout a brief yoga practice for students K-5. The video is perfect for beginners as the speaker carefully explains and illustrates each pose. There is even a timer in the upper corner to help participants track each pose. FIT Sandford is a great resource for educators, parents, and community members; be sure to checkout their other resources!
We Connect
Did you know setting aside time for a meal can improve your mood and connection with your family? FIT Sanford gives a few quick tips to keep this time stress free and full of meaningful connection. Click the picture to link to the full article.
We Lead
Helping students make good choices best begins at the early grades. Click the picture for a link to FIT Sandford, here you will find a 20 minute lesson for grades K-2 complete with slides and a printable handout to guide student thinking.

Creating the Container
Changing your screen saver on your smartboard can influence the mood of the room. Consider showing gentle ocean waves or the classic crackling fireplace to set a cozy warm environment. Need to wind down at critical transitions during your class? We'd recommend the relaxing waterfall where students can work near a forest river. Read your environment and help to provide a welcoming tone. You'll find students will have favorites they'll request! Click on the picture above to the We Are Teachers site; they've developed a great playlist of the best screensavers on YouTube.

Using Restorative Circles and Play to Build Community & Resilience K-12
Two of the most effective tools for developing safety, respect, belonging, and voice in your school culture are socially engaged play and universal Tier 1 circles. Circles offer a structured and safe way for all voices to be heard, to practice listening and speaking, to build relational capacity, and explore issues related to equity and our social and emotional well-being. Well led, socially engaged play is vital for students to learn the requisite social and emotional skills of self-regulation, cooperation, teamwork, solving problems, imagination and creativity. In this experiential workshop participants learn fun, engaging and community building games and play activities that can be used in any setting alongside, and/or as part of the restorative circle process. Two texts will be given to each participant as part of this workshop: The Circle Process Guide by Annie O'Shaughnessy and the Games Manual by Howard Moody

The major work of the world is not done by geniuses. It is done by ordinary people, with balance in their lives, who have learned to work in an extraordinary manner.
