Finishing out Cybersecurity Awareness Month (CSAM) Education
Cybersecurity Awareness Month is an ideal time to refresh your cybersecurity awareness training. Here is one example of a security terms you should be familiar with:
Ransomware Attack
Ransomware is a form of malware that uses encryption to block an organization’s access to their systems, files, databases, or applications until they agree to pay a ransom. Ransomware is designed to spread across the network and target database and file servers and can quickly paralyze an entire organization and disrupt business operations. It is considered one of the most lucrative forms of cyberattacks as many organizations choose to pay the ransom to prevent losses incurred due to business disruption. Every year ransomware actors make billions of dollars through ransom payments. To put more pressure on organizations, some ransomware groups also steal critical data before encrypting it and then threaten to sell it on the dark web if the ransom isn’t paid.
Updates & Upgrades
Multiple vulnerabilities have been discovered in Google Chrome, the most severe of which could allow for arbitrary code execution, meaning the bad guys could run malicious software on your PC without you knowing. Your desktop PCs have been protected, but you might want to be sure to update at home if you use Chrome. (You should be at version 107.0.5304.88)
Schools Are Getting Hit Hard By Cyberattacks. What Can They Do About It?
Cyberattacks are an increasing threat to businesses, governments, and organizations of all kinds. Schools are no exception. Last month, the Los Angeles Unified School District, the nation’s second largest school system, was victimized by a massive ransomware attack. In late September, Michigan’s South Redford school district was targeted by a cyberattack that closed schools for two days.
These attacks aren’t isolated incidents. The explosion in online learning during the pandemic only exacerbated these challenges. In 2020, the K–12 Cybersecurity Center reported a record-breaking number of incidents, with 408 reported across 377 school districts in 40 states.
