Transportation - Seat Belt Requirement
Here is why it is important that you assist Transportation in making sure students “buckle up”. On Friday, August 4th, one of our Milton drivers was completing her practice run in preparation of the first day of school. After her last stop she was involved in a horrific accident. A waste management truck hit her bus broadside. Thank God our driver was able to exit the bus on her own two feet!
The transportation department wants to share this picture of the accident for two reasons:
- Our buses are tanks! The bus that was hit held up as designed for an accident of this magnitude. The roof did not cave in, and the side of the bus stayed intact even though it hit a light pole. These buses are tough!
- Staff reminded our drivers by email it is now Board Policy that students must wear seatbelts if they are riding in a bus that offers seatbelts (all our propane-fueled buses), and this accident provided the perfect opportunity to hit this message home. Had students been on this bus, I’m certain many would have been injured, but if students had been wearing their seatbelt the injuries may not have been as serious or numerous because their seatbelt would have held them into their seat.
Please help by reminding your students to comply with the bus driver requests, especially those dealing with safety! Just like in your cars, seatbelt usage is required. Thanks for helping us keep your students safe.
