ELC at George Earle Weekly Update
Friday, November 17th, 2023
If you are an approved volunteer, some classrooms are still looking for helpers for Tuesday. Please reach out to your child's teacher if you have any interest in helping out. It's a really fun day for students and volunteers!
Yoga Week was a success!!!
This week in specials Mrs. Thorton, our gym teacher, Ms. Fraze, our librarian, and Mrs. Crouch, our music teacher spent the week focusing on Yoga! The kids learned different yoga poses, the power of deep breathing, stories about Yoga, and much more! There are so many wonderful resources for teaching your kiddos yoga. They love the stories they can read teaching them the poses, they love Cosmic Yoga on YouTube, and they also love the yoga monkey on YouTube. Ask to see their best snake, dog, cat, frog, or lion!
Can you believe we are halfway through Quarter 2 already?!?
Talking Goals & GRIT!
Grit is working hard, persevering and never giving up! We all need grit to get through life. Angela Duckworth and her team from the University of Pennsylvania are working on clever strategies to help students learn to work hard and adapt in the face of temptation, distraction and defeat. When Angela was asked why she studies perseverance, she said, "Why? Because life is hard. Because there are just obstacles every day in everything that we want to do. If it were easy, it would be done already, and I think that goes for any work that's worthwhile." In other words, children need to be taught to appreciate that it is normal to struggle when working hard on a challenge that exceeds their skills. It is normal to feel confused. Frustration is probably a sign that they're on the right track and to gut it out through natural human aversion to mental effort and feeling overwhelmed. Think of the story "Little Engine That Could." When it got hard, he never gave up and continued to tell himself. "I think I can!" Teachers are here to assist your children when they struggle and encourage them to keep working to accomplish their goals. In addition, they teach students the process of working through the tough work and never give up. Down below are the goals we worked towards in our first quarter along with all our new goals for quarter 2!

Congratulations to our very own School City of Hobart Superintendent, Dr. Peggy Buffington, for receiving the Golden Yohan Award at last night's Hobart Educational Foundation's Annual Taste of Autumn event! Dr. Buffington has dedicated her life to helping our Brickie students and we are so grateful for her leadership! (And yes, it took an entire team of people to keep this surprise from her! ) Congratulations, Dr. B., and thank you for leading with excellence and kindness!

Please update emergency clothes in your child's backpack!
It’s that time of year where the weather is changing. Remember those bags of emergency clothes in your child’s backpack? Please swap out the summer clothes for fall clothing. Please also make sure your child’s emergency bag has socks and underwear in it. If your child doesn’t have a bag in their backpack- please make them one!!! One outfit, one pair of socks, and one pair of underwear. This is for any emergency your child may encounter here at school, not just bathroom accidents. You never know when they may slip in mud or chocolate milk will attack at lunch!!
OH NO!!! YOUR LITTLE BRICKIE ISN'T FEELING WELL?
If your child isn't feeling well, please keep him or her at home. You must report the absence IN SKYWARD before 10:00AM. There is no need to call the school to let us know. If there are any questions about the absence, we will reach out to you.
