Good luck to our local 4-H members participating in shows and contests at the Nebraska State Fair this weekend!

The Nebraska State Fair will be here before you know it! Get the earliest access to everything you need for this year’s 4-H events, including show programs and results, by downloading the Nebraska 4-H mobile app (go.unl.edu/zbap) now!

County fairs are one way for 4-H members to showcase their hard work, and here’s another! The 4-H Project Showcase is an opportunity for youth to receive statewide recognition for their favorite project or a project they’re particularly proud of. Submit your project by August 10 to see it featured at the Nebraska State Fair. Learn more at 4h.unl.edu/project-showcase.

• As we head into a busy weekend full of 4-H shows and contests at the Nebraska State Fair, let’s not forget to practice good sportsmanship! This is a skill we strive to instill in young people all year long, and it is essential during fair time. We know, too, that young people learn how to deal with conflict, disappointment, and competition by observing the behavior of those around them. So, of course, we expect everyone involved in 4-H to demonstrate good sportsmanship, including parents, volunteers, and officials.

Each participant will grill 3 chicken thighs with their special technique on an outdoor grill (supplied) over charcoal. They will also do an oral presentation on facts such as the nutritional value of chicken in our diet, the chicken industry in Nebraska, etc. Judges will also be judging the grilling process as well as tasting the finished product.

All participants will receive a free grill and the winner will represent Nebraska at the National Poultry Contest this fall in Louisville, Kentucky. All entries must be valid 4-H members.

It’s time to work on those Diamond Clover plans! This program encourages youth to engage in a variety of age-appropriate experiences and rewards youth for trying new things, setting goals, and keeping records. Excited to announce another year of the Nebraska 4-H Livestock Achievement Program. This additional opportunity for livestock project youth, is designed to promote all educational aspects of 4-H livestock projects including selection, production, leadership, and exhibition by recognizing youth striving to improve in their livestock project knowledge and leadership.
