Self-Esteem:
What is it and how does it affect us?
Developing A Healthy Self-Esteem
Self-esteem refers to the level of confidence in one's own worth and abilities. As parents, helping our children develop a healthy self-esteem is one of the most important things we do. Self-esteem ultimately effects all aspects of their life: how they problem solve, how they interact with friends, how they handle difficult situations, how loved they feel, and their approach to new situations in life.
101 WAYS TO PRAISE A CHILD
Do you need some new ideas to express how wonderful you think your child is? Sometimes saying the same idea in a different way, helps the person hear it better.
PROVIDING CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM
Taking advantage of teachable moments while not damaging their self-esteem is our job as parents. For the complete version of this handout please visit http://www.superduperinc.com/handouts/pdf/340_ConstructiveHome.pdf
VALIDATING YOUR CHILD'S EMOTIONS
Sometimes our best intentions can be misinterpreted. Avoiding these situations with our children, can help improve the communication and decrease the conflict.
Self compassion: an inner dialog tool
One of the best ways to boost over all self esteem is to teach kids how to speak to themselves compassionately. We all speak to ourselves throughout the day, but for many our own self-talk can be negative, thus propelling a negative self view. We have to help kids treat themselves kindly. It is important to help children understand that what they see on television, movies, or other forms of advertisement is not always reality. Having open discussions with your children can promote healthy self identity, and increase their ability to differentiate between the factual and embellished material they encounter in the media.
