Tashua Family Weekly Update
Mrs. Neumeyer, Principal
September 22, 2023
Dear Tashua Families,
We had an exciting week here at Tashua School! In honor of International Peace Day, students participated in a Pinwheels for Peace Project on Thursday. This project, started in 2005, is celebrated each year by having students decorate pinwheels, "plant" them outdoors and the spinning of the pinwheels in the wind will spread thoughts and feelings about peace throughout the world. In addition, Grade 4 students created Peace Doves to be hung in their classrooms.
As you can see, we love to have fun at Tashua School, but we are also working hard too! I can't believe we have already completed 1/10th of the school year. In the short 18 days we have attended school, we have set strong, measurable goals for our students. Most of our students in Grades 2-5 have completed the iReady baseline assessment. This student data, along with our DIBELS assessments, Fountas and Pinnell Reading Records, math baseline assessments and other district measures, will help us to target the learning needs of all students, helping to ensure their academic success.
Not only do we want our students to shine academically, we want them to develop strong social and emotional skills; learning strategies for coping and finding joy and happiness in their days. Mrs. Paredes, our school psychologist and Mrs. Oporto, our school social worker, teach lessons in the classrooms, provide small group targeted sessions and meet with individuals as needed.
We are excited to announce that Aaron Reynolds will visit us virtually for a school-wide event on Tuesday October 10th. Students love his books such as "Creepy Carrots," "Dude!" and "The Incredibly Dead Pets of Rex Dexter." Families and students may purchase books in advance and they will be signed by the author, however, orders need to be placed by September 27th to accommodate this personalization. Please use the link, Tashua Author Visit Purchase to purchase items and be sure to add "Tashua School" to the comments and use the free shipping code, as mentioned. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions at smckenna@trumbullps.org.
In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Congressman Jim Himes invites students from elementary, middle, and high school to participate in the Hispanic Heritage Essay Contest! The essay should honor a Hispanic/Latinx icon and reflect how the icon has inspired the student and their own aspirations, the importance of what the icon means to them, and recognize their contributions and vital presence as a Hispanic/Latinx person within the United States.
All submissions must be received by Tashua Office By Thursdays October 5th. Essays should be no more than 600 words for high school students (grades 9-12), 300 words for middle school students (grades 6-8), and 100-200 words for elementary school students (K-5). Essays may be in English or Spanish. Pictures are optional with submissions. Submissions must include parent/guardian name and contact information, student’s name and grade, student’s school, and school address.
Again, we thank you for your continued support and partnership in ensuring the success and happiness of our students. As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions, concerns or good news to share by emailing me at NeumeyeJ@trumbullps.org or calling me at school 203-452-4433.
As a reminder, we have NO SCHOOL on Monday, September 25th in observance of Yom Kippur.

Mrs. Neumeyer

Math News
Sangeeta Gidwani
Tashua School Math Specialist
I hope your children are enjoying math class this year. Kindergarten and Grade 1 are using Bridges in Mathematics, while Grades 2 - 5 are using the Eureka Square Math Program.
Kindergarten Math at Home: Practice counting a set of 10 objects with your child. Practice counting out loud from 1 to 50. The goal for the end of year is for all students to rote count from 1 to 100 without errors as well as a count a set of 20 objects accurately.
Grade 1 Math at Home: Students can practice adding and subtracting within 10. Provide students with real objects to understand the meaning of adding and subtracting. For example, 4 spoons and 5 forks together make ? utensils.
Grade 2 - 5 Math at Home: Students are learning new strategies in grades 2 to 5 for computation with whole numbers. The student homework book (Apply Book) contains a Homework Helper page before each homework assignment. Please review the helper page together to see what your student has learned in class and ask him/her to tell you more about their understanding. If your child is frustrated with math homework, please send in a note attached to the HW so the teacher can follow up the next day.
Students also enjoyed creating Math Emojis to show how they feel about math:
